I bought my first DSLR last year. I was looking at entry level models and use it really for my KZbin. The D3300 has 60 fps 1080p video, which was the deciding factor to get it. At the time I didn't know about Sony and Panasonic being great for video, but I think that neither of them were as cheap as the D3300. The Kit lens is great for my filming too. I did get a 35mm prime, but the kit lens is just so much more flexible with the zoom.

Lens design used to require massive manual raytracing calculation, then very expensive mainframe computer time. After all these years of cheap supercomputers and raytracing being a common job for the CGI industry, I'm pretty shocked that focus breathing is still not being addressed.

Tony and Chelsea rate the Canon 5DsR more highly than the Nikon D810. However, DXO doesn't see it that way at all. The D810 is the 2nd highest scoring camera, while the 5DsR is the 32nd. It scores the D810 at 97, and the 5DsR at only an 86. Big difference! Why this large discrepancy in outcomes?

The 50mm STM is a great improvement over the previous model but compared to the Ultrasonic lenses with the gold ring it definitely feels a class below. It's on a weird middle ground between the basic lenses and the mid-range to me.

Jack Dooner Or compared to the kit 18-55, which now feels like a toy. So yeah, totally fine build quality for being an entry level and very cheap lens.
@alexfiftyem8 жыл бұрын
AcidTripwire Hey, put that way if you compare it with an all metal Zeiss it feels like a toy. I'm talking about it taking into consideration what it is and where it stands, and from there I say that entry evel cheap lenses being toy-like is no longer the case. I mean I can't even imagine a kit 18-55 taking the beating my 50 took since it came out.
@AcidTripwire8 жыл бұрын
+Alex D. For the money, the 50 STM is an incredible piece of equipment. I got it for £73 grey market, a complete steal. I was planning on upgrading to the 50 1.4 Ultrasonic one day but I don't really think the improvements are worth the heavy price increase any more... We use an 18-55 kit at work for passport and profile photos and it is just a clunky and completely unsatisfying experience in comparison to the STM.

why are so many people saying the 7Dmk3 is long over due? IT HASNT EVEN BEEN OUT FOR 2 YEARS. it came out september 2014. the Original 7D was released september 2009. YES the d500 is better, but the nikon D300s came out in July 2009. thats 6.5 years later!!! The canon will need an update to compete better, but it doesn't have THAT much of a disadvantage when it comes to taking PHOTOS. don't be expecting a new one anytime time soon. they will probably be taking all the latest and greatest tech of NEXT year or further to make it the most relevant to its release date. (when ever that may be) expect a new 6D to come first or the 5d4. and don't think they will release those in 2016 either. remember. 2017 is Canons 80th anniversary and 30 years of EOS.

Coming from a d3200 they are both crazy updates I'm leaning towards the pentax the K1 is 3.17 times cleaner at base iso then the d3200 (based on the d810 sensor measurements) the d610 is 2.63 cleaner at base iso but has (better?) glass

Do you think Panasonic will ever come out with a full frame video centric camera? I shoot video in low light, so the m4/3rds scare me.
@Lionheart23238 жыл бұрын
GH4 users have been calling for this since the GH4 came out almost. Some people speculate the GH5 will be full frame, but to me it will never happen. I wouldnt be surprised if one day they came put with a full frame for the GX line, but not for the video-centric GH line
@vegetablepolice8 жыл бұрын
DracariaEntertainment Would be great if they did. There's not many full frame cameras designed for video with a fully articulating screen. Just tried the Sony VG900 and my Canon G7X outperformed it in most areas lol.
@therealscottgrogan8 жыл бұрын
Why does M4/3 scare you in low light. You can shoot at a faster Fstop and still get things into focus. I mean, unless you are trying to shoot in the dark. . . . There are advantages to M4/3 and the GH5 will have a better sensor. I mean it won't match full-frame in terms of noise, but most full frames are cropping down anyway. Might as well use a sensor made for it. You can push te GH4 to ISO 12800 with useable results. Just remember the GH4 is over two years old and a lot of the time they are comparing it to newer cameras.
@Lionheart23238 жыл бұрын
+Scott Grogan the sensor in general doesnt scare me. Its the gh4 specifically. I have the gh4 and the g7, both m43, and the g7 is much better at higher iso. I would say the gh4 tops out at iso 3200, in terms of being useable. I would never dream of using iso 12800 on the gh4. My g7 on the other hand, maybe.
@Lionheart23238 жыл бұрын
+Scott Grogan and as tony said, you compare with what is currently on the market. Ya it is an old camera, but until the gh5 comes out or gets announced at least, the gh4 will keep getting compared with the newer stuff that is getting announced/coming out. Theres no way around that

@pixelpanache8 жыл бұрын
If you used the Nikon 70-200mm with a short extension tube, I think you could still focus far enough for tight portraits. Because of the extension tube the lens itself would be focused closer to infinity, which would reduce all or most of the breathing effect.
@TheRcEngineer8 жыл бұрын
I don't get this 70-200 must have for portraits. A 85 and a 135 prime and I don't give a crap about a 70-200. A zoom is either slow or a backbraker, let alone the price and the sharpness. The Canon 70-200 2.8 Is USM II is the only expensive lens I ever bought and hate to use, it is so heavy.
@therealscottgrogan8 жыл бұрын
Work out more.. . . The zoom gives you more flexibility when shooting events. If zooms didn't have advantages, we wouldn't have them.
@TheRcEngineer8 жыл бұрын
I take two bodies with different primes. I don't see any advantage of a zoom and 2.8 is too slow imho, there are pros who claim between 1.8 amd 1.4 is a world of difference. And you are right many pros run around with their 70-200 but not all and the ones I prefer pretty much allways use a prime.
@therealscottgrogan8 жыл бұрын
You are a pro, right? So you realize that having 130 lenses to choose from verses two could have advantages. Not all events are shot in super low light, and you really can't beat the background separation of a 200mm lens at f2.8. Just because you have found something that works for you, doesn't invalidate others choices. You carry two cameras, which is actually more cumbersome than carry 1 larger lens. And if you have a 70-200 on one camera, you can have a 24-35mm f2 on another body that pretty much covers every situation at any event. How often do you need to shoot wide open at most events anyway. Or you can have a 18mm-35mm1.8 on an extra APS-C body to allow you to take lower light pictures that are not so limited in depth of field. I could go on forever about the advantages of zooms, and if you really think about it, you will realize, they can produce amazing results
@RedBullishTrading8 жыл бұрын
+TheRcEngineer 70-200 is sharper than many older primes.
@TheRcEngineer8 жыл бұрын
It is just for years I run around with stupid zooms and never questioned it. Then I started to realize they are slow have less sharpness and two primes cost about the same are 3 to 4 times faster give better separation and with two bodies I only need to make some steps foreward or backward to compensate for the zoom range. I use a double sling system, one body on each side, look ridicoulus as hell but I think most pros would prefer this to a zoom if they give it a try. It is just so hard to break your habits. On fotowalks I pitty my collegues but I also could convert some of them. :)

It is also interesting to add Tony's oft-mentioned recommendation of buying used gear, as well. Your value equations can then change based on what your intended result is for your needs. For example, if wildlife photography is not your primary aim or does not primarily influence your business in photography, a used 7D (Mark I) and an EF 400mm f/5.6 L will produce excellent results at about half the price of the D500 alone or about 3/4 the cost of a 7D Mark II body.

Changed over to Nikon for my sports stuff, have the 200-500mm and it is fantastic when paired with my D700 and D4. Just bought the tamron 70-200, mostly for sports so focus breathing less of an issue for me. Only one i'd change in your comments about landscapes would be putting Sony a7rii over the 5dsr (probably on par with Pentax) a) 42mp is a fair way to 50mp, so whilst it looses out slightly on resolution, the Sony has far better DR b) you can utilise any lens you want (canon included) with an adapter, since you're usually doing manual focus anyway c) tilty screen lacking on the canon which is a must-have for landscapes keep up the good work!

Voigtlander FE 10mm, 12mm and 15mm Zeiss FE 18mm and 21mm You can complain about the lack of AF but at these distances I fail to see the problem, you even have things like peaking, EVF and I.S to help you get the shot. Hey Tony , as usual great video ! My take : THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE PERFECT SYSTEM. I have owned both Canon and Nikon and other brands .... and there are times where one outperform the other (technology in progress) . One should focus more on getting the camera and lenses that work best for his/her type of photography. In the end people will judge your work and not your equipment. I am a happy Nikon shooter but It's not a sin if I add a Canon body and a good glass if needed be to my bag! A camera is a tool . Let's be open minded and simply get the tool (camera & lens) that will work best for each one's type of photography. Cheers

Fantastic video! Packed with so much helpful information. Thanks for mentioning about the Sony video overheating problem. It's very real and Sony company and Sony fans seem to downplay this. Note: As for portrait zooms, I use Nikon 70-200mm f/4 on D750 and D810 and it is very sharp and with little focus breathing. You might think - well don't you get less blur at f/4 than f/2.8 (of course!) but as I get close to 200mm the depth of field at f/2.8 is too tight so I end up closer to f/4 anyway. (And it's nice over many hours to have a lighter lens too ....). F/2.8 does allow more creative flexibility especially on the shorter end. Touch call.

Not mentioned in the video: if you're like taking pictures in situations of high contrast and exposing to the highlights, Nikon bodies generally give far cleaner results when lifting the shadows in postprocessing. Though this is no longer completely true, as with the 80d canon have finally adressed this drawback.

The superior but still affordable Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G can be used as manual lens on a Canon body with the use of an adapter. The flange distance of Canon body is shorter than that of a Nikon body. As far as I know most Nikon lenses don't have internal aperture motor. With a Canon body and an cheap adapter the aperture of a Nikon lens can be controlled.

Great video, very well thought through. I particularly appreciate how you went through photographers progressing from starter to higher level. I looked at canon v Nikon 1.5 years ago and I went Canon because of lens availability, especially the 10-18 entry level, very important for architects who don’t necessarily need a good photo, we just need a photo to capture a lot to remember what we saw. That brings up a great point, a lot of photos are for showing they’re for record keeping or remembering something we saw. A lot of the time phones and point and shoots do that, but those have limitations.

For events I use zooms mostly, but for low-light or portraits I'm a prime shooter so I'm more interested in... Conventional: 85/1.2L II vs Nikon 85/1.4? Environmental: 35/1.4L II vs Nikon 35/1.4? Headshots: 135/2L vs Nikon 105/2 DC or 135/2 DC?

Great video. I've been a Canon shooter for about 5 years now.. and I believe this actually when Nikon started moving ahead with sensors and Canon has been catching up since. It's amazing how the entry level D3300 handles ISO3200 and 6400 for example, and appalling how bad the Canons were at the APS-C ISO game up until recently.. and still.. even the D7200 still works better then any Canon at high ISOs.. not to mention the D500. I hope there's a 7d markIII coming.

and what about canon 70-200/4? low budget sport/portrait/universal/solid built/water sealed lens, which is awesome... is there anything like this for nikon for this price?

I wonder how Minolta 80-200 compares to Canon 70-200? There is a good modern FF body for it (42 MP Sony a99-2).

Great video! I have just entered photography after a 25 year break when I used a Nikon FG. I have purchased a Nikon D7200 with 18-140 kit lens. Hope to upgrade lens in near future. Planning to get a 70-200 ED VRII to start with. Was thinking in long term, if I upgrade to full frame camera lens will still be useable.

You are SOOO right about price point. Dollars do matter. It does make a difference. And it is good that Canon holds that slot open. No, I don't think Canon is loosing any money on that lens. But having an inexpensive option may convince a novice to experiment with a new technique he''s been reading about, thereby demonstrating to himself (and maybe a wife) that maybe, just maybe he's got some talent, and that he did not make a crazy mistake when he picked up that camera in the first place.

My original body was the t3i with the kits lenses 18-55 & 55-250mm. Im thinking to get rid off the 2 kit lenses and upgrade to 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8. Mostly shooting portraits 88%, wildlife/nature 10%, and commercial about 2%... will the 2 lenses I'm looking to upgrade be a good start? Thank you for your comments. Oh and I am currently using 7D and 60D.

Could you please point me to where DXO explains how perceptual megapixels are calculated? I have looked but only found just trust us on DXO.

It's a secret method and formula so their tests can't be reviewed, critiqued or controlled for accuracy or reliability. It's not scientific and manufacturers can buy better results for their products, since no one can check if they are, at all, correct.
@airb19768 жыл бұрын
+toxilox you are not correct. dxo is the only lab which make lenses comparable in the right way
@Gmagee8 жыл бұрын
I don't "think" manufactures can buy better, but why are they the only "lab" to compare lenses the "right way"? Also what is the "right way" to compare lenses?

Hey Tony, a couple of times you refer to the 5DMk3 as 24 megapixels, I think it is a bit less than that. As always great unbiased video. Love your work

Seriously thinking about a DSLR and narrowed the field down to Canon T6s or 80D - like both and can't decide whether to make a value purchase or technology/functionality purchase - leaning towards T6S but think the 80D is really a great choice for both photo and video. I will soon make a decision (end of year/inventory sales). Like your videos and the team aspect you and Chelsea share, gives some much needed variety to the genre. Thanks for your channel . . . Your videos have been helpful and aided my entry in the DSLR world. I decided with the d3300 and was looking at a non kit lens upgrade. often I hear the term fast used for lenses but I don't recall why that term is used. love your videos...

Amazing knowledge Tony. Thank"s for taking the time to inlight noobs like me. I struggle to buy a camera with a tilt screen, a microphone jack for better video recording (I"m not sure if I should go straight for 4K / I think a little less will also suffice), preferably with more than 20 Mp for good details, good autofocus whatever is inside the lens or the body in bundled with some most case used lenses that will let me approach these 20 MP (for now) at maximum 1000 euro. (Germany)... This is so frustrating .. are so many pros and cons for everything, that I"m very confused now. I gather Knowledge for about a week and I feel more and more confused. i would like a canon for versatility but it seems I can't touch it for what i want...

Recently moved to a Canon Rebel T5/ 1200D from an old cheap Sony DSLR... Really liking it. There are so many options for lenses. Really enjoy using the 50mm f1.8 stm, and also my 24mm f2.8... Great lenses which both give a 3mp improvement over the kit lens. I did consider the D3300, but as Tony said, the D3300 is more expensive and that 50mm 1.8 lens is more expensive.

While not technically a mistake I think the Canon 80d should have been included. There was a decent upgrade, and lot of people compare it and the D7200. Any comments on the two compared?

What is the difference between the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 apart from the fact of the price and that the f1.8 will be better in low light conditions? Which would suit me better just starting out doing long exposures and liking to photograph sunsets?

so if a lens basically can give you about 11 mp sharpness, would it not be better to have a 12mp camera as opposed to a 24mp??

I like it when you express your own opinions as a pro user. It is something no tester or peeper can ever do. I am very envious that you have Chelsey as your companion, colleague and wife. What a lucky guy you are! What I wish you'd do is making two takes of these video presentations as it is so obvious there are many things that you think of the first time while the video is running. You could edit the two to one then afterwards. Did I say I like you? I forgot. Sorry.

Just know that you will then have a maximum aperture of 5.6 when shooting. I have the 2.8is version & the focus speed seems just as quick ( or close enough that it's unnoticeable for me) with the 1.4 tele attached.

hehe Focus breathing? Hilarious. Here's the important part, what's the esthetic you're trying to capture and why do you think that'd give you a result which would make women hot for you?

Not sure about the f/4 version but I use the 70-200 f/2.8 MK2 with the 2x MK3 and a 7D MK1 for wildlife. They work well and give fast, reliable autofocus at f/5.6.
