When I first started talking photos 5 years ago, I was lucky to be able to work with a gracious model who constantly told me, 'I'm not going to bite you, get closer (I had a 50mm lens), give me directions, move me if you need to.' That one session helped me more than any degree in photography could have. If the photographer is confident and having fun, the subject can then be confident and have fun. Great video.

These people who would always argue whether gear does matter or not, are missing the point of Miguel's tips. If you're a beginner and just starting up doing photography, don't spend so much on gears focus more on your knowledge on how to be confident (tip#1), communication skills (tip#2), learn to pose your model/s, learn to position your model for natural lights and/or position your lights for your model to get the proper lightings-it doesn't have to be an expensive light gears. Then get yourself a decent camera and a proper portrait lens-you can start with 50mm, then get you gear out, and keep on shooting to improve your skills. Nobody will and can stop you from buying expensive gears,if you want. But the main point of this video is to make you a better photographer, and not a better GAS phototaker! Great job Chealsea and Miguel! Keep it up guys!

This is so the Best explanation of Portrait strategies ever! ... I learned Volumes from this episode and totally felt he was describing me and how I feel at times...second guessing myself and trying to understand myself as a photographer. He is so right it's so tuff balancing the artistic and technical side of photography. I have so learned what I need to work on just through watching this. I also love that he is more objective and less condemning.

Hey Tony! I have an interesting geeky question for you. If you combine two ISO 100 images (same settings, same subject, on a tripod) you get less noise, because it averages out, right? Effectively you double the sensor area and the randomness of light will be less apparent. But what if you combine an ISO 100 image with a noisy (say) ISO 6400 image? Will you get more noise from averaging or will you get less (just by a smaller amount) than in the ISO 100 example?
@TonyAndChelsea6 жыл бұрын
yeah, image averaging works exactly like that... two ISO 100 images give you the same noise as one ISO 50 image. Two ISO 100 images of an APS-C sensor averaged give you about the same noise as one ISO 100 image from an FF sensor. Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e16qk6iOip2Mg7M
@petersagi2756 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your answer, great video! So it works as I thought. But what about the second example? Would you get ISO 3200 (from combining a 100 and a 6400 image) or something like ISO 95 - in a sense that it's a bit cleaner than a single image at ISO 100?

Hate to pick nits, but shouldn’t that C-stand have a counterweight on the boom or at least a sandbag or two on the legs? I thought that was a basic safety thing, or is it something people say but seldom do?

Ha, yeah, everything should be bagged. I know they brought sandbags, but I guess they decided that one didn't need to be bagged, or they just forgot. It was pretty much straight up-and-down.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude...just finished up a shoot with 12 women indoors and had a lot of anxiety as far as coming up with posing ideas...till I watched just video. I took your suggestions for posing and it made it SOOOOOOO much easier than I thought. It made the shoot progress smoothly, and my subjects were very comfortable. It's a lot easier to pose your subject as you go, because you're posing them with regards to what looks good at the time, versus trying to come up with them beforehand. It's good though to have at least some ideas as far as the most flattering poses to start with, but from there you can Jedi all the way....thank you so much for this video!!!!!!!

Good advice. But, I do not understand the hand on the side of the head pose.
@iunderstanphotography27806 жыл бұрын
Argh I wish you went into more reasons why "gear doesn't matter" because its such a point of contention, in real life and below my comment. There are limitations on everything, but I shot good photos with my Rebel at the time, I shot great photos with my 50mm 1.8 before getting a 50m 1.4. My studio mate is still using a DSLR from 2007. Will things be easier once he gets a newer model? probably, but its his eye that's helping to create the work, in spite of older gear

Great video as always tips wise. I just really wish this was done someplace that didn't already have perfect lighting. I'd love to see them do a photography challenge where they went to places that had horrid lighting and made it work with a single flash. I'm talking hotel event space, casino meeting rooms, horribly lit wedding reception areas. I appreciate the tips, but the setup is already near perfect. Also, #8 Gear doesn't matter... In a perfectly lit place and an A7R3, great flash and a damn good lens.... Come on. Let's see this with a manual Neewer lens & flash in a hyatt hotel event space.

Nardio sounds like a good idea for another day! We had multiple videos to film about studio lights and portraits so we shot in a studio.

One light can do wonders, but you forget to mention that you guys already have the perfect ambient lighting situation going on to start with. In a normal room, with just a single window and a normal light, that situation is completely different.
@TonyAndChelsea6 жыл бұрын
We didn't use the ambient light; the flash completely overpowered it.
