Tony Kirrage decided to put on a match mid week, as there was a window in the horrible weather we have been having.
Come and join us on the shingle.
during the video, we discussed commercial trawlers Bass quotas. this is what I found out:
extract from the government guidline document relating to commercial trawling for Bass.
"it is important to note that bass caught using trawls and seines remain subject to a 5% by weight of all marine organisms per trip. The Sea Fisheries (Amendment) Regulations 2023 sets an unavoidable by-catch limit of 3.8 tonnes (3800kg) per vessel per year."
this in effect allows trawlers to catch Bass up to a limit of 5% of their catch up to a total of 3.8tonnes peryear, so as long as they are landing less valuable fish , they can take 5% in weight of that total in Bass, up to the limit set.
Netters (fixed nets, gill nets etc) can currently land 1.6 tonnes per year, the regulation says bi-catch , but doesnt set a % of total catch.
I have heard and I am now lead to believe that this will be changing soon, and that the bicatch allowed by netters, will be defined by a percentage of their overall catch.
It will be interesting to see what this infact will mean. at the moment they can set nets to catch """Sole"", but oh dear I caught 1.6tonnes of Bass accidentally. However , if this change comes in does it now mean they will have to catch 8 tonnes of Bass and other stuff, if they want to land a total of 1.6 tonnes of Bass?.
