Why GORPCORE Is So Popular, History and Brand Recommendations

Great stuff once again Tony. I do have some other recommendations for brands and where to buy them Brands: Nanga - All clothing made in their state-of-the-art factory in Motoichiba Maibara City, Japan. High tech outwear that actually manufactures their garments domestically and ethically (a rarity these days) Snow Peak - Also made in Japan clothing. This brand is very traditional and they have even been making high end camp and outdoor gear like tents and small stovetops, also made in Japan. Really neat stuff and they have a shop right here in Portland OR Goldwin - these guys are the owner of North Face Purple Label since 1982. I’d say these guys are a direct competitor to Arc’teryx, but Goldwin specializes more in PERTEX and down insulation technology, Arc’teryx more with the GORTEX and rain proofing technology. Gramicci - Their stuff cool, it’s pretty mainstream and on like, every fashion website. Only put them on this list because they were formed where Im originally from. This stuff is a bit more affordable and quality that exceeds that affordability. Now for some brands that I hope never go mainstream (because I love them too much for them to become NPC clothing) Adsum NYC - inspired by 80’s and 90’s down parkas and outwear, these guys know what quality is. 2 way zippers on most of their larger outwear pieces and all made in North America (some pieces made in Ontario like their fleeces, rest made in New York) Battenwear - Another New York brand inspired by the early years of backpacking and mountain trekking, this company was started by the fashion designer Shinya Hasegawa in 2011. Once again, the clothing is made in North America, and many bigger items like their parkas are and down jackets are two way YKK zippers. Very high quality stuff from a great USA based brand. Crescent Down Works - My favorite of this list, as I own some pieces from them and I’ve found that they are the most high quality “gorpcore” style brands ever. Their stuff is truly high end and is not mainstream or big on logos at all which I love. Quality, quality, quality is all this brand is. They ethically source their down, use THE BEST materials possible, and make the garments as ethically as possible in Seattle, WA. They have a really cool factory there and their founder Anne Michelson, who started the company back in 1974, was HEAVILY inspired by the Kara Koram jacket created by Eddie Bauer back in the 50’s which was quite literally the origin of gorpcore today. Again, 2 way, nickel plates YKK zippers, and very very warm clothing that’s based more on heritage than fashion or trendiness. More tasteful, timeless classics is what they make. Online Stores Haku Clothing - good place to find Japan market Nanga collaborations, Daiwa, and other cool JDM gorpcore brands thisthingofours - UK based store that sells CMF Outdoor Garnments and Goldwin at good prices (if you live in UK, they have a sale going) Urban Industry - Another UK store, they currently have a sale going as well that have some great Nanga pieces like the Aurora Trek jacket and some UK-only pieces from Patagonia and Columbia. Unexpected-store - Ships North Face Purple Label to USA and other countries for reasonable prices (then again it’s not actually made by Columbia but Goldwin so you’re getting a much higher quality product), lots and lots of inventory as well as pre-order stuff. They also got some stuff from Daiwa, Nanamica, and CMF.

Great stuff man. Gorpcore is also closely related to techwear so some of the brands would fall into the same category. I love that you mentioned Daiwa and some of the Japanese brands that would also fall into gorpcore/hikercore/techwear are like And Wander, Snow Peak, White Mountaineering, CMF, Descente, Goldwin, Nanga and Abu Garcia.

I’m so bummed you took down your old vlog style videos where you would shop at some boutiques and show Korean restaurants. Especially the uniqlo vlog. That was when you had the longer hair with glasses. I like the direction your taking your channel now tho.
