I love this composition by Bill Evans. At one time I listened to all the versions I could find by Evans himself and he always surprised me with new melodic and rhythmic twists, it's amazing how he even changed the way he played this composition over the years. I love your piano playing, you are brilliant and very clear pedagogically. Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Greetings from Argentina, Buenos Aires.

My all time fav Bill Evans song I learned the transcription but never looked to much at the harmony but there’s so many 2 5 1’s it would make an amazing practice song 👍👍

I appreciate you recognizing the difference. Bill Evans is my favorite Jazz Pianist. I listen to this song every day. Sometimes 6 times a day. It is the alarm tone that wakes me up.

Thanks so much for this Tony! I've got a version of this in a another Bill Evans book and it is more or less the same as yours. There's quite a lengthy solo which is useful and the use of a lot of 3rds in the right hand beneath the melody note which works well. You've added some interesting voicings and solo ideas which are really appreciated. Thanks again.!

First comment I've ever left. Would like to know if you got it. You are the first among equals to me: modest, not self important, serious but upbeat, pleasant and the standard American nice-guy. This is my fourth and final try at piano; the age clock tricks relentlessly. I'm rightly discouraged but your approach is easing the pain. Would like to buy a lesson plan for advanced beginner through to beginner advanced. Don't retire for awhile

There is a detailed written transcription of the Live at Town Hall version. I learned a lot of it 40 years ago. May still have a copy. I think it was in a short booklet with 3-5 pieces.

Interesting. I have some transcriptions but not that one. I don't usually get much from transcriptions. Listening and trying to absorb the style works better for me.

Thank you Tony all this material is so useful. I would’ve really loved to had seen this video using the chordie app you’ve used. Especially for the sections where you start going pretty quick and I can’t see what keys you are playing without playing it at x0.5 speed. Lol.
@TonyWinston2 жыл бұрын
The fast stuff is not important. Chordie doesn't do well with speed. I will try to remember to play something fast and review it slowly in a future video

I love the sus2 / 3rd in the bass chord so much Or as you called it the Steely Dan chord Another chord I love is the minor 11th which is basically two basic triads on top of each other. Example G triad / Am triad = Am11

Interesting you say these charts are approximations. This seems true of so much sheet music of pieces you really want to learn. Ones you don't want to learn very accurate! Great lesson as always. (Sound seems a bit low volume on this. not sure if it's just on my laptop?) great solo. Chords and melodies I can learn but improv solos I find sooo difficult. (do have a listen to "John Horler" on here - one of my all time favorite jazz pianists).
@TonyWinston2 жыл бұрын
Listening to 'a child is born' john horner trio.. now blue monk - much later. his style has really developed. He's awesome.there are so many monster pianists out there. I will cover him on blue monk.

Damn, this is a hard one, Tony. You're right, the chords don't go where you expect at all, though they do sound good anyway. And yet it has a kind of be-bop feel, doesn't it?
@TonyWinston2 жыл бұрын
some of his other compositions are way more abstract (to my ears ) . I think it takes some getting used to. It took a while for this song to grow on me.
