Guitar player here. Love the video! Always like using pentatonic scales. You gave a lot of alternative choices in this video that you don't normally see in guitar related videos. One that you missed (or maybe I missed it) is the minor pentatonic based on the third of the Major 7th chord, i.e. CMaj7 => Em pentatonic. This has a beautiful sound. For Dom7 chords and -7b5 chords, I like the Minor 6th pentatonic scales - lower the 6th 1/2 step. You get more chord tones in there. Saved to favorites!

I’m a Troglodyte, so I still haven’t followed the 2nd half of this, but even the basics can really get you going. Pentatonic took on a lot of dimension when I watched this. Not a “dumbed down” sound, but really maps to make improvisation more approachable. Take the simple three chord progression with three possible scales over each; all of a sudden you’re playing around with nine sound patterns, and that’s just a start without dim, sus, altered, etc, etc. Now, if I could just play them like Tony! Added thought from a non-sophisticate: Nice to see this without the jazz ivory tower of “modes.”

Hello, thank you so much Tony for this invaluable resource. I've checked out many music theory and jazz theory materials online and generally became very wary of much of this material because much of it is poor or unprofessional and much of it is just the usual hustling, trying to sell people on the idea they can learn a discipline like this without hard work. While some of the jazz material out there seems overly complex and just too much to digest, these lessons are manageable in length and substance. I had both in-class and private piano lessons from a serious jazz teacher in NYC and also took several courses from Berkeley online, and so can appreciation discussions of various approaches and how these materials are taught. For me, this material hits the sweet spot by providing great guidance on how and what to practice, but also provides an enjoyable, calm, digital version of Tony's studio "environment" which is pleasant and conducive to relaxing and focusing on the materials. I really enjoy Tony's personality and discussions. There is so much great material here, and what I always look for (and found here) are materials that hit my weak spots or that provide ways of approaching things which help make it simpler than the way I tried to learn it originally.... For example, in a minor ii-V-I I was taught to generally use dorian, locrian and altered scales, and it was alwAYS complicated endeavor to connect lines using the usual extra chromatic notes but as Berkeley teaches (and Tony notes) one can make use of harmonic minor, and the 5th mode (the phrygian dominant scale) is for me a much easier tool for forming lines over the V chord. oF COURSE the altered scale is still critical too but I see how many jazz players (including Tim Collins) reference phrygian major as the primary V chord scale when there is a flat 9, whereas I wasnt taught this at all. Another example would be when I started to think of a b9 sus voicing as suggesting the minor triad a whole step below the tonic (Am/B, for example), making it so much easier to think about the voicing. That's just some examples of learning new ways to approach basic jazz playing and Tony notes how there are different ways to think about things and you just have to find the best way for yourself. Again, so appreciative of all of what's here, including the more casual discussion topics. Its all wonderful stuff. Thanks so much for this valuable resource and please recover well from the virus and have good health. Marc S

Thanks for the concise presentation, and thanks for having a *real* piano, not some cheap synth fake piano... Always loved the Yamaha tone. This is generally part of the curriculum in college level jazz programs like at Berklee or UM. But Tony does call his channel “Jazz Piano College”, so he is covering the bases for those who might not have previously been exposed to these concepts. The only issue I have with all this is that the theory isn’t really the point, it just provides the framework. I had the opportunity to study improv with Gary Burton, he actually plays and teaches a very “inside” sound, but emphasizes the development of motifs throughout your solo. So, using a scale, pentatonic or chord tones, you might make up a three or four note motif, then you should try to develop it over the changes. I believe Tony actually does this in his playing, he just doesn’t talk about it this way.

I think it´s obvious to talk just over major pentatonics.... Because the interesting stuff starts when altering some of their notes: the 2(9)/5/6 : The perfect pentatonic for altered dominants is the the major b6 pentatonic from a major third below. E7alt = Cmaj b6 pentatonic. No chance do derive an adequate pentatonic name from Aminor pentatonic, like you would have to alter the root.
