At this point the prevailing theory is that Mirabelle is the next Candleholder. Her Abuela did not have a gift, her role is to keep the Family together. But either because she is nearing the end of her life or because she lost her way, Mirabelle was called as the next in line to lead and keep the family safe and happy. The fact that the house gets newly build in her image and with her love and caring as "foundation" emphasizes that.

That would make sense, and I think Mirabelle is honestly a great choice for keeping the family strong together, she’s so caring and is able to set aside her own desires for the good of all, even at a young age

I don’t really like the idea that Mirabel didn’t get a gift because she’s going to be the next head of the family/“Candleholder” since the movie makes it pretty clear that Mirabel should have gotten a gift but didn’t because the family, specifically Abuela, cared more about the gift than Mirabel. There’s also a lot of things in the movie that suggest that Mirabels gift would have been thread related and would have had something to do with sewing/knitting/needlework.

100% agree. I think that's why she appears on the front door (and her relationship with casita). She doesn't even need to have children to be the matriarch of the family. I could see her easily stepping into Abuela's role while Tio and Tia are still alive too. She didn't need a gift to be special. Who better to keep a gifted family together?

“The cracks started because of you.” I am just realizing that Abuela must’ve really believed that Mirabel was causing the cracks because it must’ve started the night she didn’t get a gift. However, Mirabel herself is not actually the cause, but Abuela’s negative reaction to the event. Correlation, not causation. Then the cracks further worsened when Bruno was estranged from the family. Seeing that, Abuela gets obsessed with “strengthening” the miracle, in turn putting so much pressure on Luisa and Isa, which then caused more and more rifts, which then further alienated Mirabel from her. It was a vicious cycle.

Actually I have a different take. Or maybe just an elaboration. When each family member gets their gift, they put their hands on the candle 1st to receive the magic from it, & swear an oath to use the gift to serve family & community. Then they put their hand on the doorknob, for their gift to be revealed & manifested. The night Mirabel puts her hands on the candle, & then rubs her hands on her dress. Then when she puts her hand on the doorknob, it fades. She wiped the magic onto herself. So she became the embodiment of the candle itself, instead of receiving an obvious gift & room of her own. So she's linked to Casita, directly through the candle. Then Abuela asks Bruno to have a vision to try to explain what happened or what's going to happen. It's a vision of the house with an adult Mirabel in front, and depending on which direction you look at it, there are cracks all over the house or there aren't. This seems ominous to Abuela, & makes her afraid. It makes her think it's something in the future, that Mirabel causes. But the depiction in the vision, is because, when she is emotionally stable the house is stable. And when she's not, it's not. When she becomes distressed from being left out the night Antonio Recieved his gift, she sees cracks everywhere. But they are either temporary, momentary, or only she can see it at that point. Later when she has it out with Abuela, we know she temporarily loses all hope, because the situation, of trying to win equal respect & approval seems hopeless, & the house crumbles. It responds to her emotions. So she does & is causing it. But Abuela is the one causing her distress. Abuela is causing fractures in the family with her misinterpretations & her fear & unhealed trauma. And indirectly this causes fractures in the house. A side note to mention - Only Abuela, & Mirabel ever speak to Abuelo or Casita directly. And though the house helps everyone in it, it only obeys Abuela & Mirabel. So yes she is chosen to mend the family fractures, & to carry on Abuela's mantel. She is the embodiment of the candle & the miracle. After the house & the magic is restored - there is no more candle.

@@IChooseJesus9091 It's been confirmed by the creators of the movie that the gifts people get are based on their personality. The house is intelligent and alive, and it can communicate. If there was something specific that would change the magic in such a drastic way, such as rubbing it on herself, you'd think it would have said something. It seems natural to me that the cracks in the house is a physical manifestation of the cracks in the family. Remember that Bruno left before Abuela saw the vision, she could not have been worried about that until she saw it for the first time at the engagement dinner. I absolutely agree that Abuela is the main cause of the cracks with her unhealed trauma, and that's exactly what causes cracks in the house. But when Isabella and Mirabel hug the cracks heal too, and when Abuela and Mirabel's parents fight, there are more cracks. The house responds to everyone in the family, because that's what this movie is about. It just responds more to Abuela and Mirabel, the present and future unifier of the family. The Encanto chose Mirabel to not have powers because she was kind hearted, empathetic and brave. A future unifier of the family and the next matriarch of the family. Abuela was already past 70 years when the movie takes place. Even with Julietta's healing powers, it's only a matter of time.

Replying 2 years later 😅😅 I know it's not what she meant, but I really think what she said was apt. The cracks started because of Mirabel, just not the cracks she was talking about. The cracks to breaking the vicious cycle! Mirabel's gift is being the cycle breaker. The vision showed two options, she could continue the cycle or shatter it into pieces. She didn't want to break it, but she couldn't stand aside and let it continue. Just my take. I do agree with your viewpoint as well.

I think the magical gifts are just visual representations of the different roles and personalities found in families. GRANDKIDS: -Isabela(22)=The golden child expected to be seen as a perfect representations of the family. Hasn't even been given a chance to know what she could want for herself. She's seen not heard. -Dolores(22)=The family gossip. She know what she wants but also that its out of her reach. She's heard but not seen. -Luisa(19)=The middle child who not only gets overlooked. But also working hard to shoulder the family issues. (Usually bridging between the oldest and youngest). -Camilo(15)=The class/family clown, whose role is to lighten everyone's mood. And how it makes it appear he doesn't take anything seriously. Also he has to change himself to fit what that person needs. -Mirabel(15)=The families screw up. Perceived as not able and/or interested in having anything to contribute. Her presence makes everyone's job harder.(like Isabela trying to calm down Tia Pepa and Mirabel ran into her) -Antonio(5)=The youngest who's got so much potential. And already the family trying to figure out how they can guide it. TRIPLES: -Julieta (50)=The caretaker. Trying to health everyone but often stretched so thin she ends up just slapping a band on it. Or healing the physical but not the emotional pains. -Pepa(50)=The member actually representation the emotional state of the family. She's not allowed to actually feel her emotions because of how it affects others. She can't even have happy tears because of the others will get wet. -Bruno(50)=The black sheep of the family. First his actions than his absence cause him to be talked about or ignored as a dirty secret. And now the younger generation doesn't know him outside of being the big bad monster. And most of the idea of him being the bad guy comes from hurt that he left. And not acknowledgement of why he would . GRANDPARENTS: -Alima(75)=The one who lived the trauma and to survive it, buried it and pushed on. But she becomes so used to shouldering it alone, that she doesn't care it any of the burden with the family. But by not dealing with her trauma she's inflicting some on the future generations. She holds it all in but that means she also withholds from them too. -Pedro(25-30 at death)=The member who becomes a symbol of the past and the grief. But its really a memory. Alma isn't sharing his memory with the family and she won't let herself really look at it too much either because of the pain. He becomes a photo and a abridged story. But some much of who he was and the life he lived is not shared because of trauma. BONUS: -The Towns People= societal pressures and expectations

1) With Isabella, as I completed the film and watched many reactions I realised just HOW tough she had it. She was the first grandchild. The only one at the time that the grandmother had to shape and form to perfection after her kids grew up. The obsession with perfection and the expectation from the town was not spread out amongst the family members that we know now. It was all concentrated into her, her parents and the aunt and uncle. Her annoyance with Mirabel is basically that every moment she is supposed to be perfect (24/7 basically), Mirabel makes a mistake or is being clumsy which kind of ruins the expectations she has been conditioned to think is normal. Isabela basically has to even practice posing to satisfy her grandmother which is something that a lot of people could relate to. Like not being able to fully be yourself to make sure that your family loves who they created you to be. It's way too much on one person. You even notice that in her room, that was the first time she really let out her frustrations because she can't even show emotions that aren't "pretty" publicly. 2) The gifts didn't seem like things that would be practical or beneficial to the individual. They seemed like things that could be used to maintain the village and benefit the people. So even though Isabela's power didn't seem so special, it is beneficial for people once she actually figure out that it isn't just flowers but what she allows herself to create outside of what is perfect. Even Bruno power which in my opinion was the worst to get because of how people are, it helped the town and family in the end to maintain what they've built for themselves. Or Antonio's power could help a lot with caring for the animals who ended up inside the barrier and maintaining the peace between people and animals in that space. 3) Out of all the siblings I felt the most sorry for Luisa honestly because even though it was funny that her background dancers were donkeys, it just shows that she's the mule of the family and town. Because of her physical strength, more is expected of her physically for literally EVERYTHING in town. The people got so spoiled by the Madrigal's powers that even the simplest things they should be able to do (catching their own donkeys for example), they put that on her. They don't even bother to practice certain skills as long as the Madrigals can handle it. She walks through town and all she gets are demands. Like the rest of the family, her gift is a never ending job but I feel as though her own is the worst (besides Bruno of course). 4) Even though I really disliked how the grandmother was treating Mirabel and basically everyone else with all of her expectations, her story is really just so depressing. Like on the day she gave birth to triplets (most likely a natural birth at home), she had to go on the run with her newborn babies and husband because of terrorism, then her husband dies to save the people. All in one day. That's way too much for anyone to handle in one year, far less a day. Then she has to basically be the leader of an entire community because the responsibility of that miracle was placed on her back. She never got to grieve properly or just be human. That's why I think she never saw any issue with how intense she was. To her she went through the worst so she's just giving her family what she lost. Not realising that they're individuals with their own needs and lives to live so they won't have the same obsession she has to maintain the community she lost. She doesn't see that she's harming the ones she love. She's a traumatised refugee that is too scared to mess up or else she'd go back to the worst moments of her life (losing everything). They handled generational trauma really well for a children's film. Also, the miracle was made from the grandmother's grief and pain. You see the difference in the storytelling from what she was telling Mirabel in the beginning of the movie compared to the end. She believed that the grandfather's sacrifice created the miracle because she didn't see what happened while she was crying. But you see the candle turn into a magical one when she screams out in pain. It was made from her but she never knew this. She didn't realize the magic was basically in her this entire time and it is also affected by her (and eventually Maribel as she is the next matriarch in line). 5) Whenever you have a few minutes to yourself you should really check out "Steph Anya, LMFT" on KZbin. As a family therapist she did an amazing breakdown of the members in the Madrigal family and it was really interesting seeing how she explained their lives in relation to clients and families she has come across. It's a great watch if you're interested in that.

You make some really great points here, it sounds like you have a deep understanding of the mix of characters and each of their personal struggles/ pressures. Although Isabella annoyed me at the beginning, and I personally just related more to other characters, I do enjoy seeing later in the film just how difficult things had been for her, and I think hiding the depth of her character from the audience at first really hammers home the message not to judge a book by its cover. Louisa was one of my favorites, she had an awesome song, and I just think that most families have someone who plays that role, and rarely ever complains or gets any assistance. And I think the movie also did a good job with the Grandma: yes, she was hard on everyone, but like you said she had a very hard life, and her ability to admit she was wrong at the end shows a deep humility that is truly admirable in someone at that stage in life. And I appreciate the recommendation for the therapy video, that sounds like a great watch!

I love how fleshed out your thoughts are! Another thing ive thought more about after watching the film was the confrontation scene between abuela and mirabel. Everyone was mad at her for saying bruno didnt care about his family but when trying to see in her shoes I kinda get it. Before mirabel's gift ceremony, everything was stable and secure. Mirabel not getting a gift shook the foundations she has been building for the family and the community. Her trauma and fear that she would lose everything again would kick in at this moment. THEN bruno, her son, left almost immediately. Having to deal with the potential downfall of her family and community AGAIN, and then losing her son is just traumatizing again and wouldve haunted her along with her unresolved trauma of her husband dying.

This is one of my favorite Disney/Pixar movies. I sobbed my first watch through bc of how much I related to Mirabel and her sisters. I'm not the oldest but I'm the only daughter and was expected to be perfect like Isabel, Strong like Luisa, and was never good enough like Mirabel. My brother was never held to the same standard as I was. It wasn't until I graduated and moved for college that I finally snapped and told my parents off. My parents and I are much better now. My brother and I still don't really get along with each other and tbh that'll probably never change. Also, the music in this BETTER win awards for its incredible music. Specifically, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" I love how they made Luisa strong/buff but still kept her feminine. Often the moment a woman in media is strong they're also made masculine. There's nothing wrong with that but it's great to show little girls they don't have to give up being feminine to be strong if they don't want to and that being strong isn't just a masculine trait. They apparently almost made her look like a "normal woman" and the animators had to fight to keep her actually looking buff. I'm so glad they won!!!!

In my eyes the magic was born out of Pedros sacrifice, hope for his families future and Abuelas grief and desperate desire for safty. This encanto was what they needed- high mountains to keep the dangers out and showed also how abuela runs things. But eventually things changed and they needed to move forward. The house was build on trauma and it had to crumble so they could build a healthier foundation of love. You can interpret brunos vision that way too. What they needed isn´t the same anymore two generations down the line, which reflects the way generational trauma affects families so well. I saw the gifts as compensation for the trauma. The kids sensed the grief of abuela and tried to compensate with their powers unknowingly. Mirabel didn´t get a gift as she is through being herself the glue and hope of the family. She seems to deal with problems diffrently, tries to talk about things like seeing the cracks. Only to her her family was able to open up. Antonio got a gift about communication. Which is something the family isn´t doing but needs to do. Abuela doesn´t seem to talk about problems. Which seems to be the reason why she sees his gift as useless. And the following morning after the ceremoniy she tells him“ we will find a way to use your gift in a helpful way“ kinda implieing that there is no worth to his gift He uses his gift to help mirabel and not the community. Kinda like he is helping the family to become more healthy instead of helping his abuela to remain in her old ways. Mirabel stays in the nursery because she will sheperd the next generation. In the new house the front door is showing her as the new head of the family. Just like her stuff is all handmade she brings the strands of her family together weaving them into a stronger union. Both her and abuela are having a butterfly on their clothes - and a butterfly is on the candle. Also i think the filmmakers wanted to first tell the story out of mirables and than later into the movie out of abuelas view and the house changing accourding to their emotions. which would have made it obvious that both communicate with the house the same way. But they decided it was too confusing that way. All the characters seem to have a personalty types that you can find in a disfunctional family represented through their gifts. Abuela being the matriarch, Dolores the gossip, Luisa the strong one, Pepa the emotional one, Juiletta the nurturer, Isabella the perfect one, Camillo the distractor and Bruno the identiefed patient. Just Mirabel and Antonio don´t seem to really fit in this picture, so i believe they represent the new healthy way the familiy needs to go. A healthy way of dealing with the past - through communication (Antonio), Love, hope and compassion ( Mirabel). So this is what the new house was build on so they can thrive and not just survive. This movie has so amazing themes i can´t stop to rewatch it. (hope this is understandebly. English is not my native language)

Like in the old house it is ignored that they are people and not just their gifts. And in the new house they aren’t stuck in one role anymore. Every time you rewatch it you can notice more amazing details. I didn’t notice that the clothes also have details representing their gifts until I rewatched the movie.

I think Mirabel didn't get a gift because the house chose her to be the next Matriarch after Abuela's death. Abuela also didn't get a gift. But she's the candle holder and leader of the family. A very important role. As for the reasons about the candle becoming magical, the film purposely don't give us one. Encanto was based on Magical Realism, a literary genre in wich some random magic stuff happens in a realistic scenario. So the focus is on the family. The magic is just a background. We can just speculate. I know that candles in Colombian culture have this association with Jesus and the Virgin Mary. For example, the event in wich Abuela and Abuelo met for the first time, where many people were holding candles, was the Festival de Las Velitas, a festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. So it could be a divine miracle from God. It explains why Abuela is so respected in the town. She's like a living Catholic saint (and her door in the Casita actually looks like a church stained glass). But whatever, there's no concrete answer to explain the miracle.

That is interesting. I think there's something to be said about the fact that Abuela, who didn't have a power herself, was still so hard on Mirabel (for some reason I didn't even think of that when watching the movie). But thanks for pointing that out... it makes me think that maybe there's a message/ lesson people are often hardest on those who remind them of themselves... maybe. As far as the candle, I guess my mind immediately goes to the literal reasons behind it haha, but I understand that many stories purposefully don't even address the "rules" or "reasons" behind the magic.

@@nickreacts6394 "it makes me think that maybe there's a message/ lesson people are often hardest on those who remind them of themselves... maybe."Very possible. After all,Alma _wasn't_ able to protect her family before she got"the Miracle"and she's convinced that the only thing that was able to protect and keep her family unite _was_ the magic that was given to her house and the _rest_ of her family,so the moment she sees someone as _powerless_ as she was, she's scared that they will go right back when they started:without magic ergo without protection ergo without hope😥and she doesn't realize that, now that the war is over(or at least now that they have a safe place),it doesn't really matter if they have the magic or not:the important thing is that they stick together and they help, support, love and protect each other(like her husband did).💗

As a note, the candle is their wedding candle. It's lit for the first time when you get married, and it looks like she just grabbed it from their bedroom to have a light on the way when they ran. But it's appropriate to me that the symbol of their love would become the symbol of the family's magic.

@@crunchychicken2 Well,I'm not an expert so all I can say it's about my personal taste, nothing"tecnichal". That said, when I went to see the movie,I remember finding all the songs forgettable. The only exceptions was Luisa's song, the only one that stood out because it sounded different than all the others and more"badass"in a way(which makes sense, given the subject 😎). I didn't _like it_ right away, but I thought:"This one,if I give it a chance and I try to re-listen to it a couple of times maybe I'll be able to enjoy it...."and it was true. Then I re-listened to Bruno's song on KZbin and I also found that one pretty catchy. But the others I keep finding them...MEH.😕 Also(and this is a problem that goes beyond the fact that I like the songs musically or not)EVERY-SINGLE-SONG of this movie is an expositional song.X-P Many songs from musicals are used either to describe the personality of a character or to explain something to the audience, but usually _it's not that obvious!_ Usually the songs are _also_ tied to the plot of the movie itself and help moving it forward!!For example, take"The Lion King"..."I Just Can't Wait to Be King"is used to describe Simba's personality and his life goal, but it's also used BY Simba&Nala to distract Zazu and to run away from him."Hakuna Matata"lets us know about Timon&Pumbaa's lifestyle and Pumbaa's backstory, but it's a song that the 3 new friends use to bond and it also takes us from Simba's childhood to his adulthood....In the 1st"Frozen"we don't *need* "Let It Go"to discover Elsa's powers or what's the problem they cause her...WE ALREADY KNOW!That song is not _for us_ it's _for her_ to give vent to her enthusiasm about her new found freedom and to let her use her power freely after years! There's A REASON for these songs to be there other than explaining _stuff_ to the audience. But in"Encanto"it doesn't work like that.Every-single-song it's like:"Now sit that I enlisten to you the powers of all the Madrigals." "Now sit that I tell you what's Luisa's power and why it's giving her problems." "Now sit that I tell you what's the origin of the Madrigals' powers." "Now sit that I tell you who Bruno is." "Now sit that I tell you why Isabela is not as happy as she seems."THE MOVIE *IT'S ALL LIKE THIS!* One exposition after another!😵And,because there are so many characters, none of them is _really_ that studied in depth. They're peculiar and distinct but they're all pretty...superficial. To be completely honest,I'm not a fan of this movie. The CGI is *AMAZING* but at this point this has become _the standard_ for Disney/Pixar's movies,IT'S NOT ENOUGH to make a good movie. And in my opinion, this is an...ok movie, but nothing that special or memorable. Like a lot of other Disney/Pixar movie I've seen recently, like"Moana","Luca","Raya and the Last Dragon"...the only recent movie that *REALLY* surprised me and moved me *A LOT* from Pixar was"Coco"🥺💖(and the"Incredibles 2"that was as good as the 1st movie🤩, UNLIKE"Frozen 2"and"Ralph Breaks the Internet"unfortunately!🙄🙄).

Only useful advice I can give about breaking into Bruno's tower: know your rock types: Igneous rock, made from magma. Fairly stable. Metamorphic rock, made with immense pressure and time from both igneous and setamentary rock. Still fairly stable. Sedimentary rock, made from sand and immense pressure. Easily crumbles when direct pressure pushes against it with no real backup for it (i.e.: stomping on it when it's not reinforced with rock underneath where you choose to stomp. Bruno's tower is almost entirely sedimentary rock on the path to reach the summit. DO NOT STOMP ON SEDIMENTARY ROCK!

I have to admit that even though Isabela's power seems the most useless that it's the one I'd want. Other than Julieta's - I can think of plenty of people I'd have helped if I could heal them with a meal. But I hate yardwork. So very much. And it's a vicious cycle because I avoid doing it because I hate it but then it builds up and so when I go to do it, it takes longer than it would have if I'd just gone out there and done it earlier. But if I had Isabela's power? Wave of my hand and my yardwork isn't just done but my yard is landscaped! And I'd do the same for friends and family too. Same with if I had Julieta's power. I've got a friend who stopped working to go on disability and at Christmas he was hurting just wrapping up presents (and he's stubborn and refuses to use bags). I bake cookies for family and friends at Christmas as part of their gifts and muffins as stocking stuffers. Being able to heal him or sick family members while doing something I love like baking? I'd love to be able to do that. So, on the one hand, no yardwork, lol! On the other hand, power to heal with a cookie or whatever I had baked. But if I had to choose between the two? I'd choose Julieta's power. Hands down. I can think of a number of people I'd be shoving baked goods at. Also, every single time I see that little girl yell, "It's bigger on the inside?!" I start laughing and consider it a Doctor Who reference. I don't care if they did it on purpose or not. To me, it's a Doctor Who reference. Anyway, I've rambled a bit about the power question so I'll just keep it short and sweet and say I love that you reacted to this movie and it was such a fun reaction to watch!

I personally related to Isabella the most. I didn't have nearly the amount of pressure put on me growing up, but that can really stress you out. Isabella saying she was "stuck being perfect" sounds funny at first, but think about having to constantly be on your very best behavior and never being able to relax, day after day, year after year. She was even willing to marry a man she didn't love "for the family." Honestly, I'm surprised she was holding it together as well as she was. I also read a theory that Alma, the abuela, is projecting onto Isabella. Notice in the flashbacks, Isabella bears a strong resemblance to young Alma. The theory goes that Alma is trying to give Isabella everything she didn't get: a safe home, a loving husband, a long marriage, etc. However, she didn't consider Isabella's own feelings and desires, and Isabella is so desperate to please her Abuela that she never speaks up. I really do enjoy the fact that there is no villain in the movie; even the characters we think will be villains, aren't. Alma isn't an evil grandmother, but a traumatized old woman who is genuinely trying to help her family and the community. Isabella doesn't hate Mirabel, but is under her own pressures and lashing out poorly. And Bruno, set up to be the most evil of them all, instead turns out to be the most heroic and self-sacrificing, willingly exiling himself from the the family that he loves to protect his youngest niece.

"No Pressure" and "What Else Can I Do" seem to explain why Isabela and (to a lesser extent) Luisa resent Mirabel so much. They got their gifts at the standard age of five years old, and have had to live up to Abuela Alma's standards and expectations ever since, like being put under a microscope every moment of their lives after that. Mirabel, however, has grown up with Abuela's ire, but none of the pressure to perform like a trained monkey for her Abuela's acceptance. I would probably be somewhat resentful of the freedom not to be perfect, too, especially if a close family member, like my sister, holds that station in life.

A popular theory is that Mirabel was destined to take over from Abuela Alma as guardian of the Miracle. Another is that any of the kids or grandkids could have taken over but it wasn't until Mirabel that the Casita realized that Alma had lost her way, cherishing the magical gifts of her family over her family themselves. My personal theory: if you notice, Abuela Alma had no active power. In fact she may not have had a power at all. The Miracle itself could have either been her desire to protect her babies or Abuelo Pedro's sacrifice, or a representation of their love, or a combination of any or all three. But other than the candle itself being the Miracle, all she did was take care of it. If you notice her room isn't an extraordinary larger on the inside bedroom. It's a standard room it just has her glowing name and picture on the door frame with the candle. But she herself has no active power. I will say that she has the deepest connection to Castia. You see that when the house initially comes into being and it waves it's shutter at her, and she waves back (which is actually mirrored at the end when the magic returns and Casita waves it shutter at Maribel, and Maribel waves back.) Combined with the fact that other than Abuela Alma, Mirabal is the only one to actively talk to the house. Like the house response to the other people but they don't actively talk to it and it doesn't seem to respond as personally as it does with Alma and Maribel. I think that Casita actually understood that Alma was losing her way but had to find the right person to take over. Obviously the house can see inside of a person's psyche in the way grants gifts. Isabella was really grateful and might have had an affinity for plants even before she really expressed it, Isabella was emotionally strong and also probably active possibly. We definitely know that It knew about Antonio's connection to the animals which was established earlier because Maribel knew about Antonio's connection to animals hence her gift of the stuff Jaguar. It is quite possible that on her 5th birthday when she went to receive her special room the Casita actually realized that Maribel's defining trait was...empathy. Some say any kid could have been it, but I disagree, partly because if so, Antonio should have also been "giftless" to really drive home to Alma what was up. But he wasn't. Yes he displays empathy, but I'd say he was taught that by his loving cousin. She just embodies and exudes that trait. Miracle is an empath, and fills the caregiver role in the family. We see this in the way she actually has pride in her family, extolling their virtue to the town kids. She goes out of her way, even without having a gift, to assist. Yes, some of that is her trying to prove herself but the majority of it is just her being Maribel. The way she embroiders all of her families icons and powers on her dress to represent her family. The way she was able to understand Louisa's burden and went out for a way to try to say hey it's okay if you put some that down. Or when in the end when she realizes that her eldest sister had her own pressures of being perfect and was able to reconcile with her, setting aside the animosity that she had towards her for being the "perfect, golden child." When Alma finally breaks down and admits that she lost her way Maribel didn't rub her nose in it she was there to embrace and hold that program mother and say hey basically we all make mistakes but without you we wouldn't have had this and I finally see you I see that you went through so much and you're by yourself and you were just trying your best and I accept that I accept your heartfelt apology and I'm not going to hold grudges we're going to move forward and fix things. All of this is why the Casita chose Maribel to be the successor to Alma. And also they don't have to rely on a candle anymore The magic is within them that magic being love and empathy and compassion. At the end miracle finally does get her door and I think it really strings that that's why she shouldn't have special room because of the entire house is her domain not just the house if you notice the magic went out completely into the environment into the town itself much like the first miracle that rose the rocks around the town. And if you look at the new door the design Maribel's for instance center with her hand outstretched to a well who's now behind her in a simple of that mental passing over and that Maribel is the one that is the heart, and future head, of the familia. Her "room" is the whole of Casita, minus the interiors of the others rooms. And her bedroom, the nursery, is directly across from Alma's bedroom...the only two non special rooms. Ok, Alma had her glowing portrait, but... You'll notice on the rebuilt Casita, the doors glow, but have no names or portraits! Cuz they are all together, supporting each other on the front door! There is every possiblity that the nursery is now Maribel's room, and a new nursery will be built once there is need. Last thought: I think Bruno's future vision was exactly that the house had to break and come back together when he was having it for the second time he didn't see the butterfly that was initially there I think until Maribel no one else was paying attention to what else was going on the vision just focusing on the negative stuff. Maribel saw the butterfly but then bring no said he didn't know where it was and all the things were out of order. So I really do think that the house needs to start cracking she had to reconcile with her sister the house to start healing the account or burn brighter the house would break apart again and then it would be rebuilt after the butterfly and she embraced and reconciled with her grandmother. In fact the house really start breaking apart whenever her and Alma would argue finally coming apart when they were really going at it. I think it's because it was tied so deeply to both of those women, and that the strain on their relationship was quite literally tearing the house apart. Ok, to be fair the strain on all the relationships was tearing the house apart. Like you saw the cracks starting heel up each time Maribel made inroads with family members. But it straight up broke when her and Abuela Alma were going head to head. Perhaps this will set up a pattern in the family, that whenever it is getting close for that torch to be passed (for the now figurative candle of the miracle to be handed down) that the Casita will select the next highly empathic person to lead the Familia Madigral, and the next time when someone's door vanishes it won't be a horrible thing to be worried about and cause them to shun the child, but instead celebrate it and be like, "Wow! you are going to be the next guardian of the Miracle!"

I just feel so bad for Mirabel throughout most of the movie. Thinking about it, even on a basic level, she's been sleeping in the nursery (made for children under five years of age) all her life, and she's 15! Come on, casita, at least don't make her stay in the nursery... It doesn't have to be a magic room, tied into a special "gift," but let her have a real room! She's fifteen, and still sleeping on a kinder-cot. That is just sad.

Isabella doesn't make only flowers, every kind of plant, you can be rich with that "legally" as far as I know we can buy a lot of fruits and vegetables with 2 dollars here in latin america, but in USA are very expensive you can make those fruits and vegetables as sweet and perfect as you wish, sell it and being the most healthy food provider in the world, even free in countries are so poor in the world, and you can use the plants with liana to defense your self physically, super strength let's see it in another way, you cannot use it in a work to be reach without being seen as a freak and being study by government in a lab, the same happens in sports, in self defense you can kill someone by accident, shapeshifter again you the only use for that is to cheat people, transform yourself in another to stall their money, and with modern technology someone is going to find out who you are and again ending in a lab with a lot of needles in your body.

Not Pixar. Though this is an animated musical composed by Lin-Manuel Maranda starring Maribel. The only member of her family who has no gifts

I finally got around to this and while it had some cool moments, it really didn't hit home for me overall (and I know that's an unpopular opinion). The music and the message all just felt a bit forced and on the nose for me. The message that family is the true miracle and that we are more than our gifts was laid on a bit too thick for my taste and the musical moments took me out of the film several times as well...apart from the more authentic songs (ie: Mirabel and Abuela's reunion). I'd say the best moments for me were Mirabel and Bruno because I really felt their bond about feeling like outcasts within their own family. As for Isabella...there's usually a lot of pain behind people who act like that but it's definitely hard not to take it personally. In terms of gifts, I'd 100% take Isabella's. I love flowers and nature....the ability to create beauty from your fingertips honestly sounds so cool! haha. Also, the character of Mirabel held this film together for me. She was an incredibly likeable lead and I liked her dynamic with everyone...but I just don't think this will be one of those films that I'll remember years from now. However, you clearly had fun with this so that's always fun to watch regardless :)
