One of the most common questions I get is about whether or not a person who is overweight can ride a dual sport or adventure motorcycle and/or what is the best motorcycle for fat guys? As an overweight person myself, I've spent a lot of time dealing with the various dual sport fat guy issues including setting my bike up for my extra weight and finding good dual sport fat guy motorcycle gear. It's certainly not easy to be an overweight dual sport rider, but it's far from impossible. Overweight motorcycle riding is totally possible and even enjoyable! Don't let anyone tell you that you can't ride or can't find motorcycle gear just because of your weight.
In this video, I'll run down some of the tips and solutions for overweight dual sport and ADV motorcycle riders, and answer some frequently-asked questions about topics like "what is the best motorcycle for a fat guy?" I'll talk about how to find good overweight motorcycle gear and where to go to have the best chance of finding motorcycle gear that fits you. I'll discuss some of the challenges I've faced as a fat guy dual sport rider and share some of the solutions I've found over the years.

Wow, thanks so much for making this video!! I'm about 295 lbs. and haven't ridden dual sport in 25 years, but I'm really getting the itch. I wish I lived in a an area with more trails so I could ride and get more exercise. My wife is trying Keto too, so hopefully I get some of the weight off so I can start enjoying life more again. LOVE your videos!!

I am 400lb and am trying to get to a gym (Which is hard because I frequently work 10+hrs a day and am worn out after work) I wanted to lose enough weight maybe down to 300 before I rode cause I think a fat guy on a bike would be bad looking. Maybe I try it at some point idk.

Great video! I'm currently at about 315 lbs. or so and started riding this summer to get out and active again. I put a Racetech 6.3 rear spring on my CRF 450L and it rides great. I definitely have motivation over this winter to drop the pounds and make riding all the more enjoyable. Great points about gear, I've had a rough time finding stuff that fits properly.

I agree re: sizing. I use the vendors chart as a start, then I look at user comments (Fortnine in Canada) to see if people are saying "Go one size bigger", or "Go two sizes bigger". And "yes", I have blue jeans in many different waist sizes, but cannot afford to keep bike gear with the same variety... my bike gear tells me my weight.. Great episode Dork!

I am a lady road rider. I am 5'9" and about 175lbs. I am overweight too, and I lost 30lbs. Still more to go. I struggle finding nice ladies gear. It is all either all black and pink, size 8, or just ugly. I struggle worst with boots, because I am a US size 11, nice classic boots that I can wear at work top out at a US size 9. The struggle is real! Even for 'normal' size grandmas!

I love your channel, and I'm sorry to be "that guy", but i have a few Icon jackets, and I have to correct you on Icon's sizing. If you're an XL in one Icon jacket, you won't necessarily be an XL in another of their jackets. I too, am a plus-sized rider, at 230 lbs. Icon has a few different "styles" of jackets: "Relaxed" (which is their loosest fitting jacket style) "Sport" (which is a more slim fitting style) And finally their "Attack", which is their skin-tight style. Icon's recommended sizing isn't exactly helpful either. I have a bit of a gut, but based on Icon's measuring points, they recommended a 2XL in their "Contra 2" jacket, which is their "Sport" style fit. I ordered the 2XL (per their recommendation) and it was like a tent on me. Way, WAY too big. (Thank goodness for free shipping and returns!) I decided to go 1 size down to an XL, and it fit me perfectly (in their "Sport" style). To give you a stark contrast, however, I found a local store that had an Icon "Mesh AF" jacket, which is Icon's "Attack" style jacket. This jacket happened to be a size 4XL (which I thought would be laughably too large on me...) IT. WAS. TOO. SMALL! This is why it's so important, when buying an Icon jacket, pay CLOSE attention to the "style" you're buying, and try to see if you have a local dealer to check the fit on YOUR body. Hope this helps any first-time Icon gear buyers. I will tell you thst I love their gear, it's quality made, and after I figured out the sizing issues, I've been 100% happy with them! I've got 2 different jackets and 2 different helmets, and I love all of them.

Easiest "diet" I've ever been on. I did lazy Keto (didn't track anything, just tried to stay under 21 carbs a day) and the pounds melted off. Lost 80 pounds in 9 months. You can eat until you're full and because you basically just eat protein, you're never really super hungry. It's a little limiting (I miss beer), but I've stuck to it for 2 years now.

Gear problems for a 320 lb. guy I got 0 advice. But I will say this. I weigh in at 180. If I'm on a 180 lb. bike I'm in control. A lot more so then if I'm on a 325lb. bike in technical stuff. It seems to me a 325 guy would be comfy on my 250l as long as the suspension is adequate? And I think it would be because the travel is pushing 12 inches if I remember right? Just to encourage guys who might not ride due to weight I think they would be well in control of heavier bike as compared to lighter guys who are prone to the bikes weight pulling , pushing and trying to chuck you off. What I'm try to say is 325 guy on a 320 bike might be the same as 180 guy on a 180 bike. Thers a lot more variables Like engine size and suspension mostly. What I'm trying to say is the heavy guy weigh down that suspension of a 250L causing the suspension to not feel as soft as would for my 180. Seemingly that's just physics. It's just a theory but it's MY theory lol. Don't use weight as an excuse NOT to ride! Your gonna have to do better then that!

*3 common issues for heavier riders that lead to directly to injuries:* (These are generalities, which means frequently true, not absolutely) Hopefully this communicates how easily you can address these to avoid problems. 1. *Particularly with legs - poor body awareness.* If you are sitting lazy on the bike - fine (we all get tired). But don't combine that with knees and feet sticking out. You won't have feel or control of the bike, and both are asking to get snagged and cause a wreck. If you are sitting a lot, even sitting you can pre-spring your legs to help take bumps (and save your back from all that shock), but that's hard to do with your legs sticking out. 2. *Lack proper falling technique + extra weight.* I have personally known several heavy riders who all stopped when they had a fall onto their shoulder. The extra _momentum_ of the extra weight meant popping ribs loose in their back or compressed disks, etc. *And it they were easily preventable injuries!* I'm not talking about becoming a perfect rider. I'm talking about *_learning_** a few simple auto responses when falling.* Imagine being upside down and being dropped from full body height. Would you want to fall straight down on your neck or shoulder? No! Absolutely try to avoid that. Risk other body parts to avoid that! Most martial arts teach people how to fall _and avoid injury._ (strange why isn't clear, simple and commonly available instruction that everyone teaches for motorcycles) If my friend had the *"I'm upside down, make circle with my arms" instinct,* he would have rolled down. Even making the circle the wrong direction and badly shaped would have easily cut the impact in half and made it possibly progressive instead of a hard impact. *Everyone should learn this - but heavy riders pay a harsher penalty than light riders.* 3. *Stand more.* You may get tired faster than thinner people You will sit more. *But stand when it gives the biggest payoff.* If you are going through rough stuff, stand so you don't get beat to tiredness. And *learning correct posture will make standing much easier and less tiring,* plus it comes with the added riding confidence of knowing you have the control to handle rough stuff safely. And it will help reduce back fatigue. PS riding is a great way to enjoy something that is incidentally exercise. Go out and enjoy riding more!

I crash almost every ride atm because of the snow/mud at the higher elevations we’re poking around in. I just get away from the bike and try to slide. Falling is a an art. Wear protection though. If protected and a skillful faller, you’ll be fine most of the time.

Well said. I am 57 years old at 5'9" and 205lbs and I would be considered by some as "overweight".... There is a huge difference between "couch potato" overweight and "active athletic" overweight. LIke you, I am an active overweight, I still jog 5 kms, 3 times a week and on a dual sport, I keep up with the 40 year olds all day long. If you tell yourself you can't because of your size, you won't. A positive attitude makes all the difference. Thanks Dork.

Great topic. I have been riding for many years and I am overweight, I have been on keto for about a month and a half and have lost about 20lbs I am now 345 lbs. I have always built my own suspension and resprung my bikes. For the last 5 years I had been riding a well built DR650, and I felt like it was the size of bike I needed. I rode it like a dirtbike most of the time, including a few times on a track. I recently moved to the DRZ, and a CR250 2 stroke. I have noticed that riding such a heavy bike for so long has really taught me how to use my body to manipulate the bike. I hope to keep losing and be in the 250 range. Congrats on your weight loss, great content. Keep it up.

6’4 380-390 currently flaunting a dr650. Have on occasion rode two up on it with my wife tho wasnt ideal, and was cramped, functionally was perfectly fine down some back roads. I did just learn riding talamena scenic drive with my niece on the back i needed a heavier duty tire on the back than the kenda k761 4 ply i was running. It tried to peelthe outter tread from the carcas in the twisties between the extra weight of me, my niece, and the luggage full. Hello dunlop trail max mission. More expensive but geeeze that is a dang tough tire that does really well for a large variety of riding conditions. Thank you for putting this out there.

I'm looking at a 2020 brozz and a 2014 KLR 650... I like the price of the Brozz, considering idk how into it I'm going to be, but will it haul my big self up a logging road??? The KLR is beautiful and low miles, but is a 650 too big for a beginner??? Your insight would be immensely appreciated.

6'4", 320lbs, *without gear*. Riding a Tenere 700. At my weight the transition between sitting and standing is hard on the knees, and the Tenere is (despite being very tall) kind of cramped, so I mounted a SC Tall Rally seat (+41mm) and Bosley's lowered pegs (-30mm). The resulting almost 3" spread between butt and feet made standing effortless, and the -30mm pegs functioned as sort of risers by dropping my torso that far while standing. Ergos solved! Then we get to the riding itself. Fun fact: while you may need to work up to longer technical rides (it's exhausting if you're also out of shape) riding offroad isn't harder if your a Big Boi. Because you've got far more weight to move around to balance and control the bike. Bikes too small? Not really a problem. As I said above, the greater your weight relative to the bike, the more it trivializes balancing and maneuvering that bike. I did an ADV training day about a week ago, and doing circles where other riders had to be fully off the inside of the bike I could do the same radius just swinging my butt out. Do I occasionally get snickers being a gigantic fat bastard on the street, particularly with the bulk of my armored 3XL riding gear when I'm riding small bikes? Yeah, it happens. But I'm faster, I can stand that Tenere up into a wheelie and take off far faster than a car can follow. *Shrugs*. Once out in the bush? My experience has been that without fail, ADV riding people are the chillest, most fun people. Never found any judgement there; not about people physically nor how they ride. Be they Hardened Enduro Beasts or "I just wanna ride this dirt road" guys. And really, a HUGE proportion of ADV riders are somewhat overweight guys in their mid 40's anyways, so it's not like they're going to say anything! Just do it. Ride!

thanks for this video made me feel better lol I bought a husqvarna TE 150 and I weigh a little over 200lbs and when I heard that the bike is designed for someone who is a max of 170 LBS. I was less worried about my body hurting and more worried about the bike struggling to carry me or putting too much strain on the bike. it rides fine and my feet barely touch the ground even when im sitting all the way down on the bike so it doent make me feel like im too heavy for it I just didnt wanna kill the bike later on down the road by being too heavy.

I'm heavy. I ride a KLX230 and it provides tons of fun. I had a CRF650L. For what I like to do, the KLX230 is more fun. It could use an upgraded set of front fork springs and I'm looking for a reputable supplier. The little bike will still do 65MPH but I don't take it that fast and I tend to limit my hiway distances to under 10 - 20 miles at around 55mph. But this works well for me and what I want from a dual sport. I like single track trails in the pine barrens of NJ. If I want to ride in place further away, I put the bike on trailer. The big CRF650 was just too tall and heavy for me to properly enjoy.

There isba guy that is 400 lbs selling his new klr650 on a facebook group right know. 400 lbs and a bad back. I see nothing good coming from a 400 lb person on a 450 lb bike hitting the ground. I lost 40 lbs in 4 months last year on a carnivore diet. Going from 236 to 196 made a big difference. But at 400 lbs just no. You ride off road you are going to fall. This isn't s person that realy should loose 50 lbs. This is a person that needs to loose a person in weight. Falling off a motorcycle at that weight is a really bad idea. Getting a bigger more powerful bike won't make it better.

What about 470lbs? Yamaha Tenere? ----- I use to own a Harley Low Rider back in 2010. I bought it when I was about 415lbs, after getting it, I dropped down to 300lbs. I got active, busy, and motivated after I got it. I sold it in 2015 after getting laid off from work, and from then to now I've gotten up to 470lbs. I want to get a bike to go riding on my time off from work, stay busy, and active. I know offroad and dirt biking is a hell of a work out. So I figured I could get my toes in the water slowly, just riding trails or dirt roads, and as time goes on I will drop weight again. But Im not sure about a dual sport or adventure bike that can handle almost 500lbs rider. Any advice?

Being overweight is a prerequisite for being a Dual Sport guy lol. If it helps anyone....... I'm 287lbs right now 319lbs at my heaviest 240 at my lowest. Rode a Crf250L in MSF class and have no doubt that bike would get me anywhere. My DRZ400 is enough to kill me if I'm stupid. That bike don't even feel my weight. I ride my sons Coolster 125cc pit bike and that thing hauls ass with 300lbs on it. I have videos of me on my channel and that 125cc got me to the top of mountains and all over the dessert. I ride my other sons Crf50 after working on it up and down the street. Absolutely slow but pulls 300lbs anywhere you wanna go on flat ground. People worried about power should know I've had minibikes with 6.5hp predator engines completely loop out and send me on my ass/back. It doesn't take much power to get you somewhere and doesn't take much more than that to injure you if you don't respect that power boy! O'Neal "Rider" boots have tons of room in the calve area. I have big calves and a pair of "Adventura" boots from cycle gear would just barely close. Other big guys on KZbin suggested the O'Neal Rider boots and I'm more than happy with the calve room. Rocky Mountain ATV has an EXCELLENT return policy. Any apparel item that you buy and does not fit you... Rocky Mountain ATV will pay for the return and send you the right size FREE OF CHARGE even if it was your fault. I ordered 2 pairs of MX boots, one for me and one for my son. Both pairs were the wrong size. They paid for return shipping to them and shipped out 2 news pairs in the correct sizes and it didn't cost me a thing. After that if its still not the right size you need, you can still exchange them AGAIN, but you must pay the shipping that time. They absolutely earned my business and my money right there. Check their website for details but what I said above is pretty much the whole policy. Big guys also have an advantage in areas. A big heavy Drz400 will be very easy for a big dude to flick around on trails and in traffic, pick up after a fall and other things compared to a 160lb skinny dude trying to manage the same bike. We could all post videos of our gear and apparel to show body size and size of jackets/pants etc for people to get an idea 😂🤣😂🤣 I'm sure there are other things to mention but my big ass got hungry typing this and I need a snack...... 😁
