Even when he's playing pretty decent, Dirk is just unable to take the important checkouts at the moment. Draws also haven't been kind to him at all: Cullen, Aspinall, Gurney and Edhouse twice. Maybe he'll have a bit of luck when he's not seeded anymore, but the Matchplay is almost certainly gone.

I think it's to do with the popularity of darts in Germany even before they started producing good players. They embraced it and were well into it. Probably has a lot to do with money and crowds but the German crowds were into it right from the start.
