I’m an RN with 35 years experience, unfortunately weight is the factor. Yes, anything that puts compression on the knee will hurt because of excess weight. Swimming, bike, elliptical are all options that are less painful. However, remember, excursions involve walking and there’s nobody to avoid that. To enjoy your continued career and take advantage of your trips I think keeping the weight loss in check and some exercise to help speed up. The weight loss will help. I’m 63. My left knee was replaced six years ago and now my right knee has to be replaced this next summer. I don’t care what the sports medicine doc say. I was an athlete and a runner and it damage the heck out of my knees. I was running marathons and running 25 miles a week for exercise.

I also “popped” my knee on a cruise. I was jogging up the stairs for ice cream on deck 15. LOL. My knee popped and then it burned. That happened the end of February. I have nursed it along with anti-inflammatory and Cortizone injection as well. Did some physical therapy and then it was worse. I had an MRI because the pain was horrible. Took 2 more cruises to Alaska and Hawaii and hobbled with a cane and a brace. Two weeks ago I finally had to have surgery on my knee for a torn meniscus. the recovery has been pretty easy and I’m leaving today on my next cruise to Mexico. It’s been a journey! I had a complex torn meniscus with a bakers cyst. Surgeon had to remove a section of my meniscus. Now I am a candidate for a knee replacement in the future. I am 60. Ugh! Take care

Walking on the treadmill is so very different than walking on the ground. They are way worse on the knees regardless of your weight! I learned this after knee surgery from both my Dr and pt 😮 ! Take a walk instead. If it's too hot, maybe find an indoor track or walk in the evenings. I got so much relief doing this! Best wishes on your continued health journey.

Ugh, sorry about the knee injury. We flew to Rekyvick Iceland on 8/13, spent a couple fantastic days before boarding Celebrity Eclipse at noon, 8/16. Did a lil tour around & decided we were going to love this ship for our Iceland, Greenland, Boston cruise. 8/17, a.m. we start to head out of cabin for breakfast & my left foot catches in bedding that had slipped off bed!!!! Flat out, just barely missing hitting head on door, stuck left arm out to catch myself as right was holding phone, water bottle! BAM! This 78 yo gal broke both ulna & radius in left arm at end towards wrist!!! To medical, they were great but shipped us to hospital saying we could not return to ship without note from local hospital stating I was “good to sail”. Well, nope, they refused & said they were setting ulna but radius would require surgery. Sooo, we get flown home (bags are on ship!) and straight to er where I find out can’t see surgeon to 8/28 which was day we should have been almost coming back on ship! Saw surgeon 8/28, he squeezed me in for 8/30 surgery & then 8 weeks PT & OT……still trying to get refund from celebrity which is another nightmare. Especially when you are the injured & only one who can take care of claim. Now, getting reading for b2b 1/4/25 on NCL Jade and determined to stay upright for the 25 days!!!!

Given how much traveling you do, an MRI would have been a good idea. Although the cortisone shot helps the pain and inflammation now, it could also mask a more serious problem. Consider advocating for the MRI to make sure your knee has no underlying issues.

Hi Tony. Just wanting to let you know I suffered for years with bad knees. I am 5 years after a double knee replacement. The best thing 4 your knees is exercise. To strengthen the muscles around your knee. Exercise bicycle is very good. Going to a heated pool and walking forwards and backwards in the water is excellent. Take a few sessions of hydrotherapy to get some good exercises. To this day I go to the pool 3 or 4 times a week. It is a lifesaver. Best of luck.

Hey Tony, I also got bad knees. A while back, I had my doc inject my left knee with a steroid. It lasted about 2 weeks before the pain came back. A month or so later, got another shot into my knee, but it was a DIFFERENT "stuff". This new "stuff" is called "Durolane", and it's a hyaluronic acid. The pain was GONE! 15 months later, I decided to get another, this time in both knees. I'm currently feeling REAL good in the knees. The downside is, if your insurance doesn't cover, it's fairly expensive. $2k+.

I became a chiropractor due to a knee that re-injured after orthroscopic surgery, for a torn cartilage disc inside the knee joint. Chiropractic worked, and I have never had to do another knee surgery for the 2nd tear in my knee cartilage disc. Adjusting L3, the third lumbar (low back) vertebra, untwists the knee joint and restores normal weight load distribution on the knee cartilage, to prevent it grinding/popping and getting "stuck" by a torn cartilage fragment. It's been 40 years, now, and I've led an active life thru maintenance with regular chiropractic adjustments, which help much more than only my knee joint to function better!

I like Dr. Ken! Cortisone shots can be horribly painful (don't try one on the inside of your hip without something to bite on) but they really do help calm things down so you can heal. I love that he didn't prescribe pain killers. So many doctors are lazy and prescribe them like they're candy but they don't help anything. I hope you can return the treadmill for an exercise bike. They're really so much better! And I reckon I should get one mine today. I've been bad.
@wallymanic9 күн бұрын
Hi, Tony. I would suggest first that you get a walker so you can take some pressure off your weight bearing joints, including your knee. Secondly, there are NSAID gels which you can put on affected joints. Third, in regards to exercise, I also have difficulty with putting pressure on similar joints, and I found that chair exercises on KZbin channels helped me get the exercise I needed and lose the weight so there is less pressure on those joints. I actually had my first chair exercises on a cruise, and it did so well, that I have continued them ever since. I think your doctor was right about the treadmill. Stay well and cruise often and I hope the knee does not limit your cruising.

I’m 71 and had a knee replacement a little over a year ago and my other one replaced about 3 months ago. I have a cruise scheduled in January. From experience with the first knee I know I won’t be taking any strenuous shore excursions but I’m going to have fun anyway I can. You may be a bit fluffy as am I. But somehow I’ve managed to loose a feed sack worth of weight (a sack of feed is 50 lbs) over the last 3 years without much effort. I’m not sure if that glimpse of an X-Ray of a knee from your last cruise was yours but it looked a lot like my X-Rays before my knee replacements. Don’t be afraid if that’s an upcoming option. After all the therapy and time it’s well worth it. I noticed you fell in Ireland and I’ve had several of those too. But, none since my first knee replacement.

We had a treadmill and when my husband (also a heavy set guy) started having knee issues, we got an elliptical as it's easier on the knees. Two points about it: (1) My fitness tracker didn't register me as "taking steps" on the elliptical because it's so low impact; and (2) the elliptical requires very little maintenance, which is a really great benefit to it. You pretty much just wipe it down after use and that's it. No need to add lubrication to the tread or re-position the tread, etc., like you have to with a treadmill. And I think the elliptical is lighter, too, if we want to move it. If your gym has a stair machine, I recommend trying that, too. I hope that you're feeling 100% soon, Tony!

Treadmills heavily contribute to plantar fascitis as well! That can really keep you off your feet! I'm also in the extra fluffy club. I'm a huge proponent of swimming laps. You work a lot of muscle groups at the same time, stay cool the whole time and zero impact. You can change up your type of stroke at any time. I worked up to swimming a mile a day and I no longer have all of the aches and pains that showed up after using treadmills at the gym! 😊

Tony, I did a 14 day cruise to Alaska 10 weeks after full knee replacement. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't have pain at the end of each day, but I had no problems completing the cruise. What I will say is that cruising with an injury just requires a bit of pre planning. 1. Bring and use a cane. Particularly if the ship starts to roll a little, having the cane provides that extra degree of support. Truthfully, I may never travel without a cane again. 2. Bring a refillable ice pack. We had our steward leave some ice in our cabin every night and I took some time to ice it every evening. Have fun cruising!

I still needed my husbands assistance walking up the steps to the Acropolis and thru Ephesus, but the shots definitely helped. Only downside is you never know how long the cortisone lasts. My dr. told me for some people the shots last 2 weeks, others 2 months and for a few, they never need to come back. I hope your pain relief lasts a long time.

The Doctor gave you pretty good advice, particularly about walking on a treadmill. Cortisone shots may work, , but they sometime don't. When your knee is in pain, in addition to anti inflammatories - Rest, elevate, rotate heat and ice. Use compression if it helps. When it hurts use a cane to take off the pressure on that knee.
