I think he counted wrong. If you try 32 cards instead of 31 it works. it also makes more sense because half of 32 is 16. I was having the same troubles and when i tried 32 it worked. :)

Easy way to avoid the setup - give top 15-20 cards to spectator and ask and say you'll the bottom half, say you both should have 26 cards (you deliberately didn't give them 26). You count the bottom half face up until you get the the 22nd card (this is the 31st card from top if cards are face down) and remember it, then count onto 26 and give the remaining cards to the spectator, have them suffle their half while you fake suffle yours. Chuck their half on top of your half and you'll know the 31st card without a prior setup.

This is a great trick. I did it a few times successfully, but for some reason, I always end up with the spectator's card in the "discarded" pile during the step when you make two piles and get rid of the one that had the last card. In addition, the spectator's card is always in the 15th position in that discarded deck. What am I doing wrong? I count 30 cards at the top of the deck and remember the 31st. I cut the deck once after the spectator adds the key card section on top. Any advice?

Update. On the get rid of keep portion, it was a little cumbersome resulting in my even jumbling and getting the wrong card 2% of the time. I've since moved to a cleaner method of get rid of and keep is putting that card face down on the table. It's a little anticlimactic for the volunteer who sees their chosen card as the last one each of the 3 rounds, but most onlookers probably are not aware. It goes by fast and increases the odds of finding their card to a smooth more near perfect every time result.

This Tricked me up so bad. The 3rd time watching I got that he says move everything above key card to the top but he's actually moving them to the bottom. Once I did that, it worked. Make the key card the bottom Most card by moving everything below it to the top of the deck

at 4:14 he placed the pile with the key card and cards below it to the top of the deck when its faced up. when you flip the whole pile over, the key card should be at the bottom

Great trick! *How it works:* In the beginning he choses a staple of A cards. They are mixed and he looks at the top card: X. Then he choses B cards, putting then on top, containing your key card K. So X is in the position B+1 and K at 31-A, for A cards were removed from the top of K. Important: The position difference between X and K is X-K = A+B-30 The position is a circlic system (with period A+B), so position X and A+B+X and 2(A+B)+X are equal. So the differenz is A+B-30 = -30. Cutting the Deck will change the position, but *not* the differenz betwenn the positions. So after the cuts the differenz is still -30. So when you take all cards from under the key card (moving K to the position A+B) the card X will be 30 positions above it. So after turning around the stable (by putting the cards that are above to the ground of the new staples) and throwing out every 2nd card, K will be the top card and X on position 16 (15+1, for you take the staple with the last card). By throwing away any odd card, the last card remaining will be the 16th (or the 32th when you had more than 64 cards initially, then the trick does not work).

Goos technical knowledge of the trick. For those who say you're a "bad magician" are in error. You are a card trick teacher, as your "handle" suggests. You are teaching the technical knowledge to achieve an effect, and this you do so pretty well. My only advice is that you talk rather quickly, which is probably due to your regional dialect. When one is a "magician", you seek to entertain by leading your audience to the effect, while entertaining (making the presentation interesting, a good story, patter, etc.) while maintaining the aura of mystery. People should spend more time perfecting the "art of magic", which is what magis is - a form of art. I just read the other posts. no one could do it. I can bet you money all your other tricks have the same posts. They all say, "I tried it, it didn't work" The only reason it works when you do it is, you loom at the card, you count all the cards in front of your audience, aka us, and you put everything where you want it. You can't do any of these things in front of your audience, and the trick won't work unless you do all of this in front of everyone. I can put a deck of cards in front of someone, look at the cards in front them. put the 8 between the queen and 6. then find the card between the queen and 6, but they will have seen me put it there, and look at everything. so what is so special about that?

To add a sense of free choice, when you have the two stacks, say your cheat card was on the left one. Tell them to pick a pack, if they say left, you say "We'll keep it then.", and if they pick the right deck, you say "We'll get rid of this one."
