The story of your coworker coming into the office for a holiday project every year and it becoming a tradition just sounds unhealthy. He is working instead of taking a meaningful break to focus on what actually matters in life - fun, family, friends, physical health, mental health, etc. He indirectly influences others to do the same to win some impact and leadership points. I would think of him as a workaholic weirdo, not a peer leader. Can you imagine the whole office empty except for some guy coding away? Bizarre.

Everything said here are super toxic traits of a workaholic single guy without family and friends nearby. I know because i am one and I’m trying to change. Time offs should not be more work. Traveling to interesting places, reconnecting with old friends and simply learning a new life skill like cooking, gardening, even photography could be so much better for a break. The world is full of wonders. It’s impossible to get bored in a lifetime, let alone a couple weeks break.

Why not just do nothing and relax?

I do that too, but I get bored after a while

@@RahulPandeyrkp I suppose I enjoy being bored for a bit, helps motivate me to get back to work after I’m off PTO

02:51 Are you seriously suggesting that people work during their time off? E.g. "fix documentation". Immediate unsubscribe

I usually don't touch my computer during holidays.

That should be the normal. Computers are meant to make humans life easy and have more time to live and enjoy.

Ooof I was just planning on laying back in Hawaii for my entire winter break but this kind of made me feel like I should be more productive lol Thanks for the idea about the work journal. I honestly never thought to make that a weekly habit.

Disagree. Take that time off in Hawaii, have fun, and take your mind off work. Productivity can wait. I keep falling in the same trap of self guilt. Not this time.

Yeah being type A makes it really really hard to destress. It's a skill you need to intentionally learn.

It's something I'm still working on, how to properly unplug and destress. It leans even more into my "always on" nature, but scheduling blocks for relaxation has helped me a lot.

Great video as always, but I wish you had put the last point upfront, since it is really the most important. So many people will take away from this video that they need a holiday project, while they actually should be doing nothing (or something fun).
