On the flip side, 18 months ago I was looking for a 981 Cayman, a number of dealers I contacted advertised the car as full service history, further down the line the car had incomplete service history/ or not as advertised. One Porsche specialist dealer who had a low mileage Cayman S at £39k had a service book stamped every year by a non OPC garage, but no supporting paperwork as the previous owner 'wasn't very good at keeping paperwork' and whilst on the phone to him we both Googled the servicing garage who's stamps were in the book, nothing came up on Google? It took me 3 months to find a car at a dealer that actually was as described, so some car dealers can also waste a customers time and is also frustrating. Been in the trade professionally for over 40yrs, all of my adverts now say, and have said for many years "If you have to ask the wife, partner, friend, bank manager or even your dog ! ... do so please before making contact, not after, serious interest welcomed, time wasters go elsewhere" ..... seems to do the trick, I have very very few people mess me about nowadays, and those that do get short shrift, politely but firmly ( Great colour on that Audi btw, really suits it and unusual )

Shocked you don’t take a walk around video as soon as you’ve prepped it, that’s when it’s at it best and out in the open, do an inside and out, it’s a quick job. As for messers, some dealers are just as bad, here are my three from this week, Audi have agreed to cancel my order as it’s been months with no contact or build date, oh well. I then called a dealer on a used car, first MOT, didn’t happen, 4 years with no MOT, I asked why? The reply I got back was , mmm, we hadn’t noticed when we took it, in, I’ll skip that then. Next one, I asked about the options it was showing on the listing, they didn’t match the car being sold, good grief, I need a week of before I go again, how hard can it be!

There seems to be a trend, (typically in Bulgaria) where 'prospective buyers' simply call just to impress their newly acquired girlfriends to show them their 'power' - laughable and yet true. To flip the narrative - I had the opposite problem from a dealer. Arranged an appointment with dealership to view a Maserati Ghibli and gave them the details of my trade in, in advance. Viewed the car, liked it, nice spec but a few problems, including a 2" gash in the tire sidewall down to the threads that would need replacing. Oh, and they would only allow a brief test drive on nearby roads on the day, which was suspicious. Left it that they were to come back to me with a trade in valuation on my car and to schedule a proper test drive. Never heard back from them, no reply to my follow up email, a total waste of my time. Finally bought elsewhere with a dealership that didn't waste my time and I didn't waste theirs.

He would get them in the sales office to finish the deal and they would be about to come out with an excuse such as “ I have to ask the mrs “ and he would have a white board behind the customer with top 10 reasons not to buy a car ! 😂 Number 1 , have to ask the mrs Need to think about it Need to get an insurance quote I got more to look at Not sure about the Color etc etc .. As a reasonably regular private seller of ‘premium’ cars ( had various Mercs. and BMW’s) had a similar problem. I am fastidious with serving/ repairs/ documentary history and such. This includes ‘not being able to afford the insurance’, ‘not sure about the colour’ , ‘doesn’t have the spec. I expected’ ( in spite of clear listing) and so on. Had ‘the wife’ excuse and been blanked. And some ‘donkey’ stupid offers where I’ve just walked back into the house. Now I make it clear do not bother if you’re not serious and can’t afford the car either by telephone or email. Seems to sort most out. AND no - you can’t test drive it. I drive it with you in it.

Just my opinion.... While I agree this type of customer can be a pain, I also think it's down to you to 'sell' the car. If they say they'll call you back in a day or 2 and don't, or don't explicitly say it's not for them, a quick courtesy call/text/email a day for 2 after could secure a sale. Doing this doesn't make you a 'pushy salesman'. If it got you 1 extra sale a month, it's got to be worth the little effort it takes.

From what experience ive had from my pervious sales job in realestate, ive found out that if you dont call back and get a response people wont be bther to cal you back to say a no. I know its annoying but it should be a paert of a ritual, i wouldnt be feeding my self up for stuf like that. Ive always hated the part of sales where you run after , and pound costumers for their enquiry and keeping in touch with them, which it takes skills to not make it like you arent desperate,but it is part of the job. In my opinion untill someone doesnt put a deposit on a car i wouldnt consider them as a interested customer. And the idea of walkaround video of the car make at the time when u actually take photos of the car is best so you dont bother doing it afterwards for a specific client.

We make boats and we have time wasters we have spent hours with some customers they have visited us over weeks and sometimes months then some say we will send you a deposit, and guess what you never hear from them again. We had a who ran a restaurant boat but wanted us to build something bigger she was in contact with us for nearly 2 years then January this year she wanted us to start building she visited us sent a small deposit we ordered some steel, then I told her we were about to start and she said she couldn't carry on as her grant she was relying was turned down.

I'm a new house builder and time wasters are an occupational hazard in every business. I usually can spot them but occasionally they slip through. Once had a prospect that priced me and 10 other builders. Like that's just not acceptable, 11 builders paying a QS 800-1000 euro to price up a house. Pick 3 or 4 builders you actually want and have a good reputation and price them. Don't price a dozen random builders scrapping the bottom of the barrel for the cheapest quote. There are decent people out there but far too many messers unfortunately. I just know on these cowboy builder programmes they just accepted the cheapest quote and thought everything was going to turn out rosey.

This non-communicative potential "customer", is just the norm in society these days. I get so many emails and messages asking is the car is still available. I answer all messages very politely, but over the last year, very, very few have ever come back to me. So now I just let it wash over me. I have all my cars prepared and ready to go. Photographs and video done before they go on sale. This way I'm not wasting time when I get these time-wasters messaging me. I just take it as a numbers game now. I might get 40 time wasters asking "is it still available", before I get a real customer who wants to come and buy a car.
