Soft! Maintaining a moisture/protein balance can be a challenge. For my low porosity hair, I can use conditioners that have a little protein in them, but for some reason, my hair hates shampoos that have protein within the first 5 ingredients or so. I also have to be careful with gels that have a lot of protein. Hot crunchy curls belong in the snack isle, not on my head! Great video!

SOFT! Very Informative--Thank you! I've been using a shampoo that has as its main ingredient bamboo fibers, which is very protein-rich. I couldn't figure out why my hair felt dry right after rinsing and would remain so even after using conditioner. Now I know what I've been doing wrong and can make a more informed choice when I go to the hair-care isle. Thanks again for your service through this video and suggesting products for low porosity hair-types (like mine) that you've tried on yourself and can stand by. Your beautiful curls are so defined and look so soft--each ringlet speaks for itself! I couldn't help but notice the shine on your curls--I swear Lydia your hair twinkles! Keep up the good work! Unrelated.... but can you do a video on how to lessen hair shedding? It sheds a lot in the shower during washing/conditioning. I know you said in another video that trimming helps, but I do that and still shed a lot. If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them. Not sure if you deal with this at all.

@cosmicblue79855 жыл бұрын
Sometimes extra shedding is due to thyroid issues or clogged liver
@toodles67344 жыл бұрын
Is it shedding or breakage ? Excessive Shedding takes place at the root of your hair trimming won’t solve anything. Breakage happens on a weak point ON the hair strand, then trimming should help.

Ok so now it’s all making sense. I have low porosity and I used to use a keratin shampoo and conditioner consistently before I started caring about ingredients (CGM) and now I’m really noticing that the silicone made me blind to seeing that my hair hardly needs any protein. I also discovered why a leave in I just bought makes my hair literal Velcro so I’m now going to over moisturize and try to balance 💕 thank you!

I was always told that when your hair feels dry and brittle, you need to up the moisture game, and if your hair feels mushy it is the opposite and you need protein. I have medium porosity, so in general with most masks and conditioners I am fine as most things from the drugstore that I own are quite balanced out.
@LydiaTefera6 жыл бұрын
That’s a good rule! Thanks for sharing!
@cheralewhite82536 жыл бұрын
I've heard the same thing. And actually try to adhere to that rule myself. It's just so hard/tricky finding moisturizing lotions, conditioners, and even deep conditioners in my area at times. And then when I do try other brands like the Neutragena Triple Moisture that I came across by chance in a Walgreens. It wound up not doing much for my hair when it was relaxed. Not sure if it will for my my natural hair now either really.
@jaquayparker61606 жыл бұрын
Soft!😃 I have been there before with protein overload last year or the year before. I didn't know i had low porosity hair and did a 2 step protein treatment. Boy was my hair frazzled, dried out, crunchy and didn't respond to moisturizers good. Had to do a big chop and cut my hair to the shoulders. To help make my hair managable i had to add heat to my conditioners. sitting under my$20.00 heating cap once or twice a week helped. It took a while for the moisture to get back into my hair and for my hair to respond better to my hair products.
@LydiaTefera6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it definitely can be hard to manage sometimes! Thank you for sharing!
@amixeblu6 жыл бұрын
I am sad you chopped your hair; you probably could have saved it just fine, like you did the remaining hair on your head. It is often like having your hand on a trigger, just wanting to "fix" by cutting, but often that is not the first reaction you should have. I hope that when this happens next time, you will try the treatments first so you won't have to cut off those lovely curls! :)
@amixeblu6 жыл бұрын
No but Jaquay did, unfortunately.
@jaquayparker61606 жыл бұрын
I didn't cut my hair to the shoulders right away. My hair was already dry and frazzled from the protein treatment. Deep conditioning didn't repair my hair at all. Low porosity hair does not need protein. My hair acted a lot better when i cut my hair to the shouders and deep conditioned with heat. My hair grows fast. In a matter of months my hair was long again.

This video was right on time. I have fine, low porosity and protein sensitive strands. I usually just use henna masks for strength, but recently tried a henna with methi aka fenugreek in it. The henna mask had my hair so dry and brittle til I realized fenugreek can act as a protein like strenghtener. I also was using it with Eden Body works co-wash which I just discovered has protein in it ( I've since replaced it with protein free As I Am Co-wash👌). We protein sensitive naturals really have to pay attention to ingredients. Thanks for this video. Love the product recommendations.❤

Soft all day long! Haha, I can honestly say since doing the big chop/shaved to bald(coming up on 3 months next week). I've never craved having softer hair more. Cause when mine first was re-growing in. The scab hair behind my ears and side burns was all kinds of hard and crunchy. Til a few weeks ago when it finally started accepting moisture better. So definitely agree with needing the right amount of moisture. As to protein info in this video. I totally appreciate you making this video, because to be honest I'm STILL learning how to properly read ingredient labels on products. And although I do try and remember that anything that has Keratin or Hydrolyzed something or other is going to be protein based. I still tend to forget about which sulfates and alcohols and what not to look out for as well. But I'm definitely jotting down the types of proteins so that I will remember them. Now the real question is in finding moisturizing leave-in's deep conditioners, etc. in my area. As it seems like about the only thing my major retailers want to sale is everything that has to do with protein. Which, I agree with you is not a bad thing. It's actually great. But then you slide the other direction and end up with too much protein. Thank goodness for Sally's and the internet.

Soft. I like making an avocado and banana mask for my protein treatments. I do them once or twice a month. I had protein overload recently and then it turned into moisture overload, so I’ve been having a hard time balancing them. Also I have vitamin c deficiency right now so my hair and skin are a little dry because it causes the body to build up too much keratin. What you eat effects how your hair feels also.
@LydiaTefera6 жыл бұрын
Wow you bring up some very important points! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

The only protein that can truly penetrate is gelatin (DIY), the rest, egg, avocado, yogurt, have molecules that are too big to penetrate. HTH!

Marleen G. Avocado works well for my hair. It brought my curls back from moisture overload and makes it shiny. And if I use it when I don’t need it, it will still cause protein overload, so it works for me, but thank you😊

If I use products that are protein-free but has silicones (Aussie), would it be counterproductive if I’m trying to get rid of protein overload?
@LydiaTefera5 жыл бұрын
Protein and silicone have different effects. Too much protein will cause your hair to become brittle. And too much silicone will coat your hair and block moisture from coming in. So it just depends on your preference and how often you use the products. I personally try not to use conditioners with silicones in them. But that’s just me. I know people who use it and have no problems. Everyone’s hair is different and has different preferences. Hope that helps!

@cheralewhite82536 жыл бұрын
Hi again, I forgot to ask a question/was wondering what was your take on lighter vs. heavier protein based conditioners? And do you think that, a lighter protein based leave in conditioner, could be just as moisturizing as a conditioner that doesn't have protein at all? Like for instance, I've picked up Cantu Shea Butter leave-in to give it a second go round as my hair is longer and not quite as short any more. But what is different this time, is the fact that I read on a few different sites that it's considered to be a lighter protein based leave-in product. So it had me wondering if I could just do my L.O.C. method using it, without following up with a moisturizing cream, since the protein factor was on the lower spectrum. Also, since this product has Shea Butter in it(a cream I've often heard people suggest for the C part of the L.O.C. method of moisturizing their hair), does that mean that I could essentially just use it as a one and done L.O.C. in a jar given that it has water for the L. there are essential oils mixed in for the O. And the shea butter is the C. Or would I still have to add more moisture and more oils and another Cream in order to get this product to work in my L.O.C. method? P.S. sorry about so many questions. I'm still just trying to figure a good chunk of this stuff out really. And aside from you and Greenbeauty and maybe a few others, being able to explain hair stuff so easily. I doubt I wouldn't even know where to begin to even ask about this stuff in the first place. So totally appreciate it.
@LydiaTefera6 жыл бұрын
I personally don’t follow the loc method so I may not be the best person for this question specifically but I would say that you may not need to follow up with a cream but if you notice you need the extra boost of moisture then add it in
@cheralewhite82536 жыл бұрын
No probs. Thanks for at least thinking it over and giving it some thought for me. And actually while waiting for you to reply, I found yet another blog saying that the cream portion of the L.O.C. method should be some sort of styling cream. Which makes me laugh out loud as I've never really used those either, lol. Oy vey. Thanks again though. :)

sis where was this video 5months agooo 😩 SOFT btw 😏 but anyways I had real bad protein overload it was so bad to the point where it would hurt me to detangle my hair, I would braid my hair because I just couldn’t wash it it was too painful I would get migraines that lasted for hours and I was loosing so much hair. (this was going on for almost 6 months btw) I was ready to cut all my hair but thankfully I dm my hair stylist the day before my appt and she told me it was a protein overload. Literally all of my products were heavy on protein so I had to give them away 😑😩

Aww what products did you eventually use to fix it?
