Too Old For Barbie?/ Barbie the Movie ~ Some Thoughts

I am 44 and I have loved Barbie ever since the first I saw a Barbie!! Lol!! I use to play with my moms old 1960’s Barbie’s, and I can remember getting the peaches and cream barbie for Christmas and was over the moon. When I grew up and had my girls all of them were showered with Barbie’s, my middle child grew up watching the Barbie movies and we absolutely loved them they were her favorite movies to watch, watching them on repeat. About 6 months ago when I was buying my 5 year old Barbie’s for Christmas and watching toy reviews it hit me, hold on I want these for myself, and I havnt turned back since! Loved this video, and I love the love you two have for Barbie and each other!!❤

I’ve been kinda waiting for this video from you lol When I first saw the Barbie movie and watched the trailers I was annoyed since it came across like they where making her out to be the blonde spoilt bimbo who can’t handle the real world that society has invented of her which is the opposite of Barbie stands for. I turned 30 this year and I’ve loved her for as long as I can remember. For me some of it is about nostalgia because I love all the happy memories I have but it’s followed me into adulthood, I’ve actually decluttered a lot of my things this year and got rid of my dolls but I felt weird and odd without a Barbie so first thing I did was run the shops and grab myself a new Barbie 😂 anyway I’m hoping maybe the movie surprises us and the things I do like about it so far are the fashions, the nods to the classic Barbie dolls and how “Barbieland” is a bunch of life size play sets and dream houses which is really fun, but also yes so many fake fans who only like stuff because it’s a “trend” I hate that! And those stupid posters being everywhere you turn you can’t escape them 🙄 I like seeing Barbie merch in stores and will always get excited seeing it cause seeing anything Barbie makes me the happiest but now it’ll all be selling out and then sold in second hand stores in a few months. We know we’re genuine fans anyway and will always support the true values of Barbie 🥰

Haha! Actually have been looking forward to your comment too as we've been wondering what your thoughts may be on this. :) And definitely couldn't agree more! It's like Mattel is now endorsing this pop culture view of Barbie that makes her out to be something she isn't and that's just really sad. This movie simply doesn't portrey her as the Barbie that true and genuine fans know and love and have had a deep connection to since childhood. It's totally okay to have those nostalgic feelings when they come from true and good memories.. Even we love looking back on our memories with Barbie in the early days and through the years. The thing is our love isn't based only on that.. she has grown with us through our lives and stayed an ever present part that we never felt the need or desire to get rid of or hide in anyway just because it wasn't cool or acceptable for our age. Almost every girl played with Barbie growing up.. doesn't mean they have a real connection to her. So many of these people are just jumping on the bandwagon now, but we'll watch them leave soon enough. Agree with what you like about the movie, those things are cool. Especially love the 80's and 90's fashions from iconic dolls in there.. sadly though if it were made in the 80s or 90s or heck.. even the 2000's.. this movie would have been better. They still could make a fun movie without making it so.. untrue to Barbie and the real fans. But yes you're right! We'll always be able to keep the true values of Barbie in our hearts and no one can ever take that away. And hey.. if worse comes to worse we will just move on and pretend this movie doesn't exist. :P

@@BarbieLovers awww well I totally agree with you! 🩷 Barbie is a best friend to us, she’s always been there for us and we’ll always have a strong connection to her. Like you said this trend will pass and if the movie is super awful I’m with you with pretending it doesn’t exist 😂🙏🏻

Hi! I really enjoyed the video and want to tell my thoughts on the topic. I think Barbie should be more recognized as an inspiring role model rather than a doll with unrealistic body image. It's a pity that a lot of people talk about her in a negative way. The live action movie will probably only support this idea of her being perfect which is only dissapointing for, well, Barbie lovers who want other people to view her in a positive light. I hope that someday this will change and not because of some trend😔 Another thing I would like to point out is that loving Disney and collecting their merch isn't considered as only for kids that much anymore but by the actual company by making live action remakes. These movies are made mostly for people with nostalgia about the 90's Disney classics. Making them live action also supports the idea that animation is only for kids and live action is only for teens and adults which they're not (and that's also happening with Barbie with the new movie😥). I'm wishing all Barbie fans the best and never be ashamed of who you are!🙂 Ps. I've been a Barbie fan for about 10 years and I don't plan to stop😁

Thanks so much for this comment! :) Agree so much with everything you said! It definitely seems that's the road they are taking with this movie and it's really sad because that's not Barbie at all. That's very true about Disney too.. It's sort of the first thing that became ''acceptable'' and even ''cool'' to like whilst others were still considered childish. And you're so right about it being mainly the live actions!! That and the ''nostalgia'' thing of course. I still see a lot of people putting down ''Disney adults.'' and the only time it's ''okay'' is when it's being nostalgic for your childhood because apparently only children can really love things? Disney was never intended to be only for children. I think Walt would be very sad if he saw what it's become today because it was meant to include everybody. Adults should be able to experience joy and dreams and all these good things too that come with Disney and Barbie etc. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us! :) and good on you! i have a life-long history with Barbie. i really want to enjoy the new movie, but i can't shape this foreboding feeling. The trailer didn't excite me, but it made me interested in seeing more of how the Barbie world was designed and exactly how Barbie and Ken made it into the human world. i am puzzled about Christie's absence and why all dolls are named either Barbie or Ken.. . except for the 1960s Allan and pregnant Midge. i feel that was a terribly missed opportunity. There were far too many names to choose from for the writers to have been that lazy. .. but they might get my money. It could be a nice summertime outing. If it's bad enough, i'll just walk out.😆

Yeah it's weird how they wouldn't include Christie... maybe she just wasn't shown in the trailer.. but that's also weird, haha. But yes it's really exciting to see Allan and Midge! Totally agree with all the missed opportunities with the names and other things. I guess they're trying to be funny with having there be a million Kens but the joke is he doesn't have a personality of his own? It kind of seems like they're making fun of Barbie tbh.. which is what we feared when we saw the plot initially, and just playing to that pop-culture view of her which sucks. But yes, walking out is always an option xD that would be so funny! hahaha.

I was excited to see a movie coming out and the first trailer was interesting but this second one is making me question alot of things. I feel like Barbie as a brand has strived to make Barbie less bimbo and more intelligent and independent who is not perfect at everything and is human and I feel like this movie might now down size this inspired character to the "bimbo" that most anti Barbie groups view her as. The plot line at the moment is vague but I hopefully it is not the concrete version of the final movie. I heard it was meant to be Barbie getting kicked out for not being perfect so she leave to go to the real world. It was mentioned that an overly played and messed up Barbie doll would be there and she would not be considered perfect to live there so hopefully it does not go down that road of the original plot line. I have seen a few images of the backgrounds and stills of the trailer and it seems like they have created something thoughtful of actual Barbie products that exist which is nice to see especially with the fashion. I do understand the whole everyone is equal but I find it strange to have everyone named Barbie and Ken except for two characters as in the Barbie world Barbie did have individual friends who had their own looks and personalities so it's sad to not see Teresa, Christie etc (I'm glad they included midge). I think it would have been nice to have used the head sculpt names or the other doll friends like marina/Kira, Summer so that not everyone is "just a Barbie". Also it seems as if Barbie's sisters will not be part of this movie either which is sad. I was a fan of the Barbie as.. movies and life of the dream house series so Im hoping I will like this movie too. My last comment which I hope is not what they are following but the posters of individual characters states Barbie is everything and Ken is just ken. I was not a fan of ken when I was younger but I appreciate him now especially the long haired Ken dolls and hope that they aren't just doing the dumb hand bag boyfriend thing to him and that he actually has some kind of confidence boost thing to not just be the dumb vain character and he gets his own personality and that they don't dumb him down to big up Barbie as much as we love her they should be equals too. Their relationship should be held up as the power couple in the movie as they had such a strong sweet relationship in the life of the dream house series and it would be sad otherwise. And yeah if they're going to go back to those eras of Barbie it would be amazing to see all of her unique friends who had their own names and personalities. It just seems as though this idea is being really pushed of ''everyone can be Barbie.'' Which is stupid on so many levels. They really could have done so much better with this. @@BarbieLovers Thank you for responding. Yeah I think that's why they added Brooklyn as a new friend it almost erased the rest of them. I did notice atleast there is some diversity it looks like some of the cast will represent some different people such as Indian, blacks, Asians and the impaired but we will have to see. I showed my boyfriend the trailer and he isn't sure he will like it as I introduced him to the more fantasy barbie movies and so he said he will watch this one with me. I look forward to your review and I'll let you know what I think too

@@rexxy5 Yeah it's such a shame because even with Brooklyn they are calling her ''Barbie'' so she isn't even really her own person and then all of her other individual friends are gone. This definitely would have been a better movie if it was made years ago, but now it's hard to hope for much good to come out of it. :/ For sure! Would love to hear your thoughts at the time too! :)

A(freaking)MEN! So annoying, so frustrating. The prices soaring, the trendiness of the hobby, the cliques forming and the constant competition. The new movie which is inappropriate and trashy and the constant posting of those movie poster filter pics. It's not just the "nostalgia crowd" but the new Mattel too. They just don't care.

Totally! Yeah it really seems that Mattel used to care more about Barbie for sure. Now they're kind of just letting her image turn into this thing that it isn't meant to be, and feels like they've really let Barbie go. This movie is pretty much proof of tha t it would seem. Kind of like MGA turning Bratz into what critics always said they were.. pretty sad to see that happen with Barbie too now..

@@BarbieLovers I wish I knew what they were thinking. It seems to me that they are leaning into the ever so popular (but also overused and almost obsolete) shock and clickbait tactics of social media. It would also explain Mattel’s recent use of crowdfunding and NFTs etc. It is a desperate attempt to keep relevant and have people talking about it. Which seems to be working for now but how long will it last? Like “omigosh, did you hear ken saying he will ‘beach off’ other kens?”, what is with that!? It is disgusting and I don’t think the majority care about that stuff anymore. The world is becoming so desensitised that shock tactics don’t really work anymore. At least not from what I see. Either people are all for it or they just sigh and shake their heads in disappointment like me.

@@DeanReen Very true. They don't seem to care too much about preserving the true image of Barbie. I think this movie has an agenda all it's own.. which most of them sadly these days do. If it were made earlier, there might have been some hope for it. Right now, we're just looking forward to when the hype settles down and people forget about it and we can simply pretend it doesn't exist, lol.

Yes. Although we didn't mention it, this is definitely what we find the most comfort in. And when things are dark, I thank Him for the lights He sends in forms of things like this which always help me look up and remember hope again. 🙏🤍
