Great game! First battle report/playthrough in years that I've watched in entirety. Really appreciated cutting the battle into "periods" with commentary in between. Clear rules explanation/commentary before/during the battle. Has definitely sparked my interest for 2mm wargaming in general and S&H in particular. Thanks!

TY both, for a great game series here. Hope Mark enjoys his deserved vacation. Rich, no doubt you deserve some time off too, for the work evolved in getting these rules ready to deliver - have a good, refreshing walk when you're able........from an appreciative mate in the USA.

Great rules system and design. I especially like the Command Board, the activation rules, the use of setback and disaster cards, and how combat rating "advantage" gives an extra die (or two) to choose from rather than a DRM. Only challenges are: 1) it is it's a bit difficult at first to follow what roles or failures trigger a Reversal of Fortune and which don't, and what requires a discipline test and what doesn't - at least for me, and 2) Mark's accent is a bit difficult to follow. Btw, I appreciate Mark's bit of OCD between 19:21 - 19:27. 😁

Rules arrived today and they are very well produced and I'm more than happy with them. Another question if you don't mind. Where can we download the PDF bases mentioned in the pre order please?

They’ll be available on the publication date, so Monday. We thought we’d send the rules early, but we can’t end the advanced order period early.

I usually don't play this time period, but after watching these, I think I may have to get this ruleset. It would be fun to lead the Optimates against the Populares in Pharsalus or Thapsus

I’ve got some plans for a series of Civil War battles. Thapsus would work well.

@@markbackhouse3372 @John Mumby John, John, John, old friend!! Great idea having Mark's Helvetica start on the hill. As Mark says during the gameplay, get one of those Roman legions skedaddling off and bad things happen to their army. Mark, what result is "in the cards" for a routing Roman legion and perhaps a loss of their Eagle standard?
@markbackhouse33722 жыл бұрын
If a legion routs that’s a disaster card. Anywhere between 2-7 points. If legions rout there is a chance of taking high centurion casualties (another setback card with 0-3) or losing their eagle (another disaster card!) So potentially I just needed to rout a legion get lucky by capturing their eagle and the game might have swung to a Helvetti victory! Luckily for Richard these things don’t happen very often!!

Andy, don’t tell me I’m not the only great Caesar in Gaul! You’re right about ease of play. For me to be quoting the stats and doing the combat maths on film is quite remarkable. I normally fail to do that correctly with games I’ve written!

If I'm playing Romans here, I really want to wheel my right flank legion 45 degrees and make life difficult for the oncoming Helvetii. Given the grid system S&H uses, can I actually make that maneuver in the game ?
@markbackhouse33722 жыл бұрын
No
@markbackhouse33722 жыл бұрын
Historically Caesar detached the third line of cohorts to form a new unit facing off to the flank. That IS something you can do in the game though.
@MichaelLlaneza2 жыл бұрын
Oh sure, but to my eye, that's crying out for a 45 degree angle.

Hi, the game looks great, what army lists are included in the book? I'd like to refight some punic wars battles.
@markbackhouse33722 жыл бұрын
I’m afraid the period currently covered in the rules is 105BC-200AD and are therefore a bit after the Punic Wars. We are playtesting the next supplement which will cover the Punic Wars and the earlier Republican period. There are 20 different lists in the book including several Roman variants, Gauls, Britons, Germans, Numidians, Mithridatic, Parthian, Slave Revolt.

Got more intrigued by these rules as the videos went on which, as is normal with TFL productions (and rules) were excellent. Rich's sense of humour really cracks me up LOL. I might have missed this but what is the penalty for calling a 'Hummunculus Est' and getting it wrong? There has to be one right otherwise you might just as well call it every turn or at least every turn once your opponent is up to 10 cards? Also, are you allowed only one attempt per game? Otherwise with a break point of 15, if your opponent was at only 14 on the reveal, may as well call it next turn too, or does the opponent get to put one or more of their cards back in the pack or whatever.
@przemekbozek2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the interesting conclusion, would be interesting to see the breakdown of the values between "Setback" and "Disaster" cards. I'm a big fan of dice and will consider replacing them with dice instead and rolling them (for weighted result) when the test is called for. I've pre-ordered the game today, looking forward to the release :)
@tonys43412 жыл бұрын
I like the cards much better. Seeing your opponent's fear as he begins to amass large numbers of cards would surely gladden the heart of any Caesar. On a more prosaic note, by using cards you'll get a slightly different random distribution than using dice.
@przemekbozek2 жыл бұрын
@@tonys4341 True. I'll see how the game plays before I make up my mind one way or the other😁
@markbackhouse33722 жыл бұрын
It explains the breakdown of the cards in the rule book. You might be able to do it with dice, although counting the cards is a valid tactic as there are limited numbers of certain cards and these impact your odds. With dice it is more random and numbers can be rolled more times than there are cards in a pack!
@przemekbozek2 жыл бұрын
@@markbackhouse3372 Yes, that was one of my concerns :) Aiming at initially playing solo, I was considering going "low cost" initially and just awarding "setback dice" and "disaster dice" and then roll on made-up table (weighted once I see full deck composition) to see the results. But again, will need to see the full rules and will probably try both approaches - think I just like my dice too much :D
@przemekbozek2 жыл бұрын
@@markbackhouse3372 , I'm slowly making my way through the rulebook to understand the system. I've noticed that rules section 8.4.2 cover what happens if you hit a single formed unit behind you (both move 1 more square then stop) and an enemy unit. What happens if I hit 2 units - does it just stop retreat without any consequence? What happens if I hit impassable terrain?

Fantastic series of videos that explained a lot of my questions, except one? Do the cards come with the game or do we have to purchase them seperatly as I have the preorder in and want to get into a game as soon as possible?

There are eight pages of cards in the rules that you can just cut out. Or, failing that, we will be making them available as a printable pdf that you can then laminate.

14:34 I'm still baffled by combat resolution. Yes, at 14:34 Mark would roll 3 dice and Rich choose one. But...then Rich has to roll a dice and match that one. The 3 dice don't matter at all and it doesn't matter what the value is. Rich just has to match it. It's always a 17 percent chance of matching. I have to be misunderstanding something -- what am I missing?
@toofatlardies2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. The result of combat is different depending on whether you roll a 1,2,3,4,5 or 6. 1 is bad, 6 is great. The rest are varying stages in between. But you are right, whether I have a 1,2 or 3 dice roll, the defender gets one dice in defence which can cancel that hit. It's a 17 percent chance. Does it really matter that the odds are the same? It's miniscule in reality! I've jumped out of aeroplanes at 450 feet. If they told me that I had a 17% chance I may well have been somewhere else!
