Also, this song is in partnership with a video game called King's Raid. The video loosely follows its storyline. Yoohyeon and JiU were best friends (along with the rest of Dreamcatcher), with JiU being the princess/queen. Yooheon is seduced by darkness (the black smoke in the beginning) and starts to turn on everyone banishing/killing everyone to claim the throne. JiU confronts Yoohyeon, defeats her but can't kill her (when she throws the sword away) and Yoohyeon stabs her in the back, killing her. Yoohyeon ends up alone but with the throne. The video is shot from Yoohyeon's perspective, who convinces herself that JiU betrayed her first and that she had to kill her (the shots in the beginning where JiU is in black and Yoohyeon is in white).

Minor correction: The game is called King's Raid. Otherwise that was a great summary. For those that are interested, there's an anime based on the game. Dreamcatcher did the opening song for the second season, it's called Eclipse.

Summary is right on. I believe that the first scene depicts Yoohyeon remembering it was JiU that binded her in You and I to break the spider curse stranding her in the snowy world and lying to her about what the second ritual will do (when she covers Yoohyeon's eyes during the second ritual). The second scene is Yoohyeon taking revenge for the betrayal as JiU tries to forgive Yoohyeon for her transgressions (Burning the spider, Drawing them into the other place in Piri where they had to escape together in Breaking Out). Yoohyeon takes the control (throne) over the Dreamcatchers and leads them astray where JiU had to return to leadership in R.O.S.E Blue to save them from the mess Yoohyeon's leadership lead them to (I believe that is why the first person JiU walks up to in the crystal room was Yoohyeon and the first person she confronts in the dream world). Deja Vu the struggle over and over again between JiU and Yoohyeon threatens to destroy all of them.

@@cypherdownmedia That's a very interesting take on the MV's. Officially Deja Vu and R.O.S.E. Blue aren't part of the Nightmare Arc, but there does seem to be a running theme there. Another take on the two scenes in the throne room is that it displays the different between perception and reality. The first scene shows us how Yoohyeon remembers the confrontation where she is the righteous one and JiU is the usurper. In the second version of the scene we see the reality of it, where Yoohyeon is actually the usurper and JiU is the righteous one. I guess you could look at it both ways. In the context of this one video, what Sirvantman and I described makes sense. In the context of the 'expanded' story line, like the one you described, your take also makes sense. This is what I love about Dreamcatcher and their MV's. It's just layer upon layer of context and depth in all of them.

If you are interested in the story line, Deja Vu is a collaboration with a fantasy based mobile game and the game story centered around sacrifice, corruption and betrayal, and still staying loyal despite the betrayal (a very simplified explanation which the game story is more complex). In the MV, it is their take on the game story themes and the use of the meaning of Deja Vu, i.e. the feeling that you have already experienced something, even when you know you never have to tell the story. Basically, Yoohyeon is the antagonist which she convert Jiu's (the protagonist) throne. Hence, the scenes where the darkness enveloping her at the start showing her dark desire and corruption, and the last few scenes where she pick the sword and backstab Jiu. The usage of Deja Vu is through the mirrored scenes where Yoohyeon see herself as the "victim" (Jiu in black pointing the sword at her while she is wearing white, she helfself in the coffin with Jiu still pointing the sword etc.) whereas in the reality, it never happened (hence, the feeling of Deja Vu and the title of song). In the MV, the reality is the opposite of the above (shown in scenes with the members are always with Jiu wearing white and they only appeared in scenes where Jiu is in the coffin and not for scenes where Yoohyeon is in it). This is further hinted with the members surrounding Yoohyeon in circle with accusatory glare and the final scene where despite Jiu overlooking Yoohyeon transgression/betrayal and throw down the sword and walk away, Yoohyeon still proceed to kill her and eliminate/banish the rest with only her remaining on the throne.

To elaborate on the above, I think the progression of Yoohyeon's character is such that she started off wanting to see herself as the victim, to then realise that she is actually in fact the villain, and then to realise that she's perfectly okay with being the villain if she gets to come up on top. Or TLDR.... it's "Turns out I'm actually evil and I like it".

Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. If you ever watch Mera's guide "Dodging Disbandment and other extreme sports" about Dreamcatcher, you'll know why InSomnia are "holding this pain" when it comes to the first win. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. It's not exactly a Deja Vu per definition, but I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event.

Yes, that part by itself is worth watching hours of dance practices and stage performances for. I believe the breakdown of the sword scene is something as follows: Yoohyeon's character had given herself the false memory by convincing herself that it was JiU's character who was the villain and who attacked her first; when instead the truth is that Yoohyeon's character who was the one who betrayed JiU's character. However, JiU's character spares Yoohyeon's character (she drops the sword and turns away) only for Yoohyeon's character to then pick up the sword and stab JiU's character in the back. I also think the basic plot of the MV is that Yoohyeon's character is at first convincing herself of the false memory, only for the false memory to eventually fall apart and the real memory to resurface. But by that point, Yoohyeon's character is nonetheless still okay with being the villain of the story. Or TLDR, her story is "Turns out I'm actually evil and I like it".

TG at the start of every video: Oh now, I'm holding this pun. 😁 I first started with Dreamcatcher right in the middle of Deja Vu promotions; Handong's line is simply iconic and was one of her few stand out moments at the time. When you have seven vocal/visual/dancing queens, it can be hard for everyone to get in and make an impact on every song. That's part of why she went to China to film for the reality show: she wanted to both find and "prove" herself. She was missed so much during the Covid extended delay in her return by fans and her members and vice versa. However, the newly confident Dongie that's emerged from that hiatus is so powerful. No sleeping on her or any of the girls from anyone anymore, including herself. 🙂
