I'm a child of the 60s. I've had this tool box set for about 20 years. I've broken down and cleaned the tools within, literally washed the tool boxes with soap and water and that damn smell kept coming back! Now I know (for aure) that someone in my family is not pooping in my tool boxes! Thank you for giving an old man his sanity back, along with some knowledge to pass down. Much appreciated!

I always knew it was my Craftsman screwdrivers in all of my toolboxes that smelled like puke, but I never knew why! Over the years I’ve tried scrubbing them with every kind of cleaner but they always stink. I’m just used to it now. Thank you for the explanation!
@trekzilladmc2 ай бұрын
The other problem, I found, is that they'll contaminate anything that's stored in the drawer with them. I had a set of newer Craftsman screwdrivers that didn't have that smell, and unfortunately, stored them with some of the pukey screwdrivers, and I could not get the smell off the Craftsman for nothing, no matter what I used on them. I ended up spraying them with three coats of outdoor polyurethane to try to encapsulate them, and it did end up finally eliminating that smell.

The plastic is Tenite made with butyric acid that off gasses over time. If you think screwdrivers smell you should work where the plastic is made. The smell gets in your skin and you can smell it on your hands when you eat.

And here I figured I was the only one to notice this! I first caught this aroma in an old toolbox in the late 1970s when I was about 12. I thought maybe it was the light rust on some of the tools. The box smelled like vomit to me. Over time I figured out it was probably the "plastic" in the handles. Old plastic boxes, buckets, etc. often have a smell I call "stuck behind an old man in the grocery store on a hot day". I have a few Craftsman tools that have that odor. This never seemed to be a problem with Stanley tools. Perhaps they use a better grade of plastic.

Do like in your fridge. Put a container with baking soda in the drawer. It will absorb the smelly butyric acid. Change as needed. The more free butyric acid in the closed drawer, the quicker the decomposition of the plastic handles.

It’s funny you say that! For years I would think, every time I grabbed them, that I need to make something to organize them. I finally decided to just get one of those plates at HARBOR FREIGHT that have the standard socket bars riveted to them. Not perfect organization, but close enough. Someday, I am going to use various size drillbits and a couple pieces of three-quarter inch hardwood Plywood and make beautiful ones. But as of right now, I’m lucky I have time to use the bathroom lol Thank you as always for being here :-)

There's another product that contains butyric acid. American chocolate. Next time you tear open your chocolate bars or package after M&M's, take a deep whiff and you will smell it. The same chemical is in vomit. European chocolate does not contain this chemical. That's why Europeans dislike American chocolate. Sorry if I've put anyone off of their snack.

I figured out that some of my screwdrivers smelled a while ago. Some of them also secrete an oily substance that will get on your hands, I trashed them. Not sure if there is anything else to do with them really unless you don't mind the stink. Or if you really had time on your hands, I suppose one could shatter the plastic handle off, and keep the metal and try to make a new wooden handle for it.

It doesn’t bother me because I wear gloves 99.97% of the time I work I’ve always been clean that way, but when my third kid was still a baby, my wife ran out into the garage with him blue and choking on a piece of food, and I was covered from my fingertips to my elbows in Greece from the chassis of my 1950 Chevy Long story short, the child is alive and well. He tasted and definitely digested some grease that day… Ever since then, my OCD is much worse about keeping my hands clean. And it was already bad
