If you’re hoping to discover the best way to identify traditional coppersmithing / tinsmithing machines (sometimes called hand-crank or rotary-hand machines) this video will give you close-ups and identification factors for knowing what you’re looking for and what you are buying as you build up your own tinshop! I’m also giving you what to look for to make sure you can (hopefully!) buy whole machines that won’t need a lot of work or repair - and to hopefully steer you away from buying machines that are broken, damaged, or missing pieces.
This episode is all about #1 - the Burring Machine!
This series just covers the machines I have here in my shop. There are other machines out there that I don’t have, but will try to film with Bob in his much bigger tinshop in the near future.

If you have any additional questions about machines I use in the shop, let me know in the comments below!

I found this exact model and your video just made me make sure everything works right before I sell it, because I had no clue how it works. Thanks!

Hi there, thanks for your channel. Any chance you will make a video on how to tighten loose rivets? Love to see how that’s done. ~ Denmark.

Great suggestion! I'll do that - it's easier than one might think, but there's a trick so you don't crack the rivets or the body! I will put this on the short list to do! Thank you!!

I've recently picked up a 577b with thread on crimper dies. My problem is a tooth is broken and I don't need another crimper. What would you look for as a swap set of dies? I'm having a hard time finding dies for a machine of this age with threaded spindles.

Yeah, that's a common problem. I would see if you can find a tool and die maker or a mechanic willing to weld and grind on a tooth. Or to just make you some new dies. It's extremely hard to find matches - without buying several on ebay and trying to mix and match (which is what the old smiths I know actually do!).

Hi, Thank you for this. Do you have a video showing how to use this tool? I've never figured one out properly.

Thank you for watching! Yes - I think I have some buried in the KZbin - but if not, I will! The burring machine is the hardest tinsmith/coppersmith tool to learn. Honestly.

Hi, thank you for your videos. But as a non native english speaker its hard to understand how it works and what is the used for it just listening to you. If you cloud show how it works with a piece of copper it would be very nice !
