Don't believe that Fibonacci is only in just a few syllables. The whole song is permeated with it. If you really go looking for it, you'll keep discovering new details endlessly. From a compositional point of view this piece is a masterpiece of complexity the likes of which have not been seen for decades, perhaps for centuries. It's an inhuman effort and it's amazing how it didn't come out a jumble of noises.
@SuzakuX Жыл бұрын
I mean, all music is permeated with the fibonacci sequence. The golden ratio determines what we find aesthetically pleasing. It's the reason song structure is the way that it is. The ratio of verse to bridge to chorus and so forth is that ratio. Maynard himself considers the song overblown and a bit pretentious for calling so much attention to something humans actually incorporate into everything we make instinctively.

'Ride the spiral until the end' could also be saying until your end, rather than the spiral's end. As in, keep pushing to go as far as we can in what we have of our limited human lives. This song is basically the Tool obstacle course. There are multiple points where he is saying 'embrace the random', and then musically they are literally pushing reality through itself, and the listener is in the position of trying to fight/control it, or embracing it. You have to make the choice to open wide to suck it in, to see the beauty.
@Gyledresch Жыл бұрын
I have been waiting for this one for a long time. *Later Edit* The overanalyzing line is especially poignant in this song because as much as people love to analyze this song to death, it loses its potency when you do. This song is best understood by letting it play straight through and letting your mind ride with it on the journey. Just turn off the lights, lay back, and listen.

Tool gives us the interpretive key in the first verses of the lyrics. The first verses are a clear reference to Alchemy and the four stages of transmutation: nigredo (black), albedo (white), rubedo (red) and yellow (citrinitas). Then there is a reference to the first hermetic law: "As above, so below". It is the law of correspondences, of analogy, etc.

Danny Carey is one of the best drummers alive and ever! I've been playing drums for over 35 years. I've never learned to do what Danny does. There's drummers out there that are faster, can play crazier time signatures than he does and a ton of other cool stuff. Danny however, does it all with more taste and groove than anyone else. He's the only drummer I listen to, that I can honestly say, plays his parts the way they were meant, by the universe, to be played.

You're very close with the lyrics for the first verse! But instead of a single person growing into the colors, it's actually about humanity as a whole. More specifically, it's a reference to the evolution of different human languages, and their terms for colors. Historically, when a new language is created, the first color names they create are for black and white (light and dark, day and night) Then typically the next colors that get named are Red (as in fire, meat, fruits), followed by Yellow (sun, wheat, tigers, etc.), Green (plants and spoiled food), and Blue (sky and water). And so on... To me, this song is about the evolution of Humanity in its infancy. Learning about our place in this world. Over time, creating religion and spirituality. All the while, overthinking and over-analysing who we really are, and missing the beauty of the fact that we are just another part of the Natural World.

A match made in heaven Maynard and Knox hill. His writing is perfect for a channel like yours. Absolutely immense track, definitely one of my all time favourite tracks. Unfortunately for someone like you as you mentioned his vocal is at the same level as the music not raised up front and centre as Maynard believes his voice is just another instrument in the band. Which is weirdly how I listen to most music. First comes the melody of the vocal then after many listens I let the lyrics wash over me. But that is why I love your channel you seem to hear things completely opposite which gives me so much more depth from the music I love.

Thank you for your reactionm Knox! I was introduced to TOOL a few years ago, in Ireland, and since then, it's the rare week that I don't listen to one of their albums on loop while I´m driving. For me, they are one of the best bands of all time.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but the Fibonacci thing goes even farther with this album... It's referred to as the Holy Gift... If you take the track numbers, and arrange them in 2 Fibonacci spirals... Spiraling in and out... 6, 7, 5, 8, 4, 9, 13, 1, 12, 2, 11, 3, 10... you get a totally new album.. and every track flows seamlessly into the next... well maybe not "seamless" but the ending notes are the same as the next tracks beginning notes, the drum grooves match, etc. It's pretty amazing.

Now I need to make a playlist in that order!

How do these track numbers relate to Fibonacci spirals?

I have heard the band say the whole album definitely does not follow the sequence. I researched what I could find. I remember Danny saying there is no sequence in the record it’s self. But maybe they are just holding on to secrets.

The Holy Gift. The true way to listen that album.

The sound he heard at the beginning was the sound of a heartbeat from inside the body. The crescendo is birth. Then, black then white are all I see...early development

He actually went up to 13 on the sequence. Ridiculous cool writing

I think my favourite part of the song is where the music slows and then gradually builds again until Maynard sings, "Swing on the spiral Of our divinity And still be a human." There is a slight pause in the lyrics just before he sings this and then everything just explodes, as if to emphasize the importance of that part. It seems to me that that is the crux of enlightenment; to experience the "truth" without passing completely into another realm. By the way, in an interview with Howard Stern, Maynard did say that he is well aware of the irony in intentionally invoking the Fibonacci Sequence. Great break down.

If you think this is crazy, you should try "Parabol+Parabola", or "Right in two", by tool

Please do more tool, fans of the band love devouring tool content. Your breakdowns are some of the best I've ever seen. Keep spiraling

The worst thing about this song is people keep bringing up the fibonacci sequence. I listened to it for years and years without knowing or caring. It's great without math. Just listen to the song.
@thisfall522710 ай бұрын
It was an accident anyway. They didn’t build anything around a math sequence.

What the hell? I've watched so many of your videos but I was not prepared for this precise level of on-the-spot analysis of Keenan's lyrics in this song. Like, you have a seriously impressive brain. Kudos, man.

Tooooool!!! Definitely need more the bands songs make people think and it’s really fun watching tool reactions because it’s interesting to see how others take in and think about their songs

An amazing song off an amazing album. Tool is so much more than simple metal - they are the Pink Floyd of metal. And I know you already did Pneuma but you should watch the live drum cam version. Danny Carry is a machine - an eight-armed metronome!

Not many will recognize the pulsating sound but this is how older generation baby heartbeat monitors sounds. I was hooked on one when I was going into labour. This is how a child's heart sounds within the woumb. Also the black and white are the first colours a baby sees and then they start to perceive red and yellow. This is the spiral of life.

It's not just Maynard, it's the whole band all 4 of them are wrapped in fibbanichi sequence. TOOL is more insane then everyone says.

What's do you think will happen when he realizes that the lyrical Fibbonaci sequence went up to 13 syllables before turning around and counting down to 1?
