Lyrics:
Something has to change
Undeniable dilemma
Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear
Constant overstimulation numbs me
But I would not want you any other way
Just not enough, I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I said, I don't want it, I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
Finger deep within the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Relax, turn around and take my hand
I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way, blend and balance
Pain and comfort, deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way
But it's not enough, I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I said, I don't want it, I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
Knuckle deep inside the borderline
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to
Relax, slip away
Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can this mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all? Yeah
I'll keep digging
Till I feel something
Elbow deep inside the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Shoulder deep within the borderline
Relax, turn around and take my hand

This song is about the basic human condition, our constant need to search and find pleasure amongst pain, to find “more”. It’s one of the most important songs ever written, and to think so many people think it’s about fisting. or drugs makes me sad. They are metaphors used by Keenan to portray something much more visceral: the reason humans live in a perpetual state of wanting and dissatisfaction.

Here I am at work, mildly headbanging to the music. In my head I have long hair and I'm like 18, I look up and see my reflection in the glass. I see a grey beard and glasses, an old dude who looks kind of like me. If my head wasn't moving to the music...I would not recognize myself. It feels like I'm in a costume with my eyes looking out. What the hell happened?? I'm still the same stupid F@#$up I ever was but my clock has been running while I apparently have been asleep. Now my body has aged and I have to think about my own soon to be declining health, possible poverty, and my own death. I have to think about how badly I've prepared for my old age and how poorly I have planned my life, and how much of my life I have completely wasted. Mentally I'm still that dumb kid and I'm still doing the same stupid things that have screwed me up all of my life. Still here angry, listening to Tool, like a teenager, wanting to hide in the sound, wanting to pretend that I am not me and that I am not here.

Many of you here have a story about this song, so here’s mine. In 2001 I was travelling around Europe. While at the front desk of a hostel in Berlin I heard this song and asked the man there the title and artist. I thought he said Stake This by Tool. I wrote it down, went about my business and forgot about it. Now, with travel restrictions I’m home and found this bit of info among my stuff. I looked it up and that got me here. Well, close enough. Is it really about fisting? I’ve been known to do some unusual things, like nude skydiving, but have no desire at all to take part in fisting. I will, none the less, enjoy the classic song about it. Great heavy metal!

I remember when I first started listening to Tool in high school, this shit hits a lot harder after being on heroin for several years and now off it for just over 2, there's so many references in his music to heroin specifically, I've smoked crack, I've shot cpcaine, I've smoked meth, it's all hell but it's all got its own unique hell and anyone whose ever been down the road of heroin and IV drug use knows exactly what these words allude to.
