I'm working for a bigger knife manifactury in Solingen Germany. The blade industry in Solingen exist for a couple of hundred years and we are grinding and polishing with the machines on knee heigth. You put your underarms onto your legs and it really improves the controllability of the blade or whatever you are polishing. When polishing on knee heigth the risk of a blade bumping through your shop decreases as well. Greets, Lennart 😊🖒

Almost the same setup I have. My final (fourth) polisher is from an old bowling alley, no compound added.
@Simplelittlelife7 жыл бұрын
+ernhrtus that's a really cool idea. I never thought of that. Do they polish bowling balls? I suppose they would. Thanks for sharing that!

Yeah, buffers scare me. I use mine all the time but I have thrown things all over my shop with them. The angle of attack is the thing. There is a very fine line sometimes between terrific and tragedy. I use a product called SimiChrome for final buffing. I suspect it is a lot like the Autosol. I have even used toothpaste at times for less robust material.

Very coarse sandpaper, 40-60 grit ceramic works good for "dressing" your buffing wheels too.
@LeberwurstBrot347 жыл бұрын
why don't you turn the buffer machine 180 degree? that it rotate upwards, away from you and the edge. Cool Video:)i have found you 2 weeks ago.....already addicted to your videos😂 Greetings from Germany
@ShelleyRaskin7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually turned my machine around so it spins the other way, that way hopefully if it grans it will toss it away from me...might still bounce back though, you are right about its uses on kydex though, makes Fantastic Edges!
@dalekidd4207 жыл бұрын
Unless you are polishing on the TOP of the wheel, be REALLY careful with that. You may just be setting it up to throw the knife INTO you instead of AWAY from you. Dunno about you, but I'd rather take one in the foot than under the chin...
@dannymaciejewski7 жыл бұрын
I run mine in reverse too. I also tie a steel lanyard to the knife attached to my ball sack just in case it takes off. Its totally safe

I was a jeweler for 11 years. Dressing the buff helps to clean up between polishing compounds. A lot of times the compounds will cake up and build a hard layer on the surface. It also helps to knock out the loose threads as you work down the buffer.😀
@Simplelittlelife7 жыл бұрын
+jeffery biddix oh sweet. I was hoping someone could enlighten me. Thank you so much! I'm going to have to make one of those little dressing brushes now. Cheers👍

Harbor Freight has a nice litttle 3 inch buffer/wheel/Big but very wieldy Dremel tool combo that I scored for $22 on sale + 25% off coupon. They sell replacement wheels. It runs up to 10,000 RPM

Jeremy, I would like to see how the leather pouch style sheaths look on you knives. I have been wanting to order a knife from you but was just curious about the leather sheath on the kiridashi knife as well as the sheep foot edc.

Alaskan knife maker Gordon Dempsey was killed in a workshop accident. Apparently he lost control of a blade he was buffing and it pierced his heart.

Is your buffer machine 1800rpm or 3600rpm? I'm looking to get a 1/4hp 1800 rpm buffer since I've heard they are a bit safer. Great video!!
@Simplelittlelife7 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Lowery 3600. I do think slower would be safer. My furnace motor is slow, not sure on the speed, but it has never grabbed on my yet and my big one has a few times. Glad you liked the video! Cheers👍
@hardrock18267 жыл бұрын
Most furnace, single speed blower motors are 1725 RPM.

Hey Jeremy, How are you? Can you make a TTT talking about a Knife Maker's Vise? Maybe a "How to build" video with a simple, but useful, project. Thanks. Great video, by the way.
@Simplelittlelife7 жыл бұрын
+Luiz Alberto Kohler I'm great how are you? I am actually just sourcing materials to make one! The one I have in mind is going to be pretty decent and maybe not the simplest to build, but I should also throw in a few easier options too. Thanks for the great idea! Much appreciated👍
@Luiz_Alberto.P.K7 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeremy. I am very well. hahaha I'm sorry it took me so long to respond your previous comment. My College is driving me crazy in the last days. I just watched your video making the vise. You were right, it isn't the simplest one to build but I liked it. Good job. In a few weeks I will start making my own. I will send you, maybe, some pictures to a "Viewer's Vises" video. hahaha Thank you for the help. Greetings from Brazil

A lot of other knife-makers I have seen and know, call their polishing wheels the "widow-maker." I've also had a few knives get yanked out of my hand... very dangerous.
