Official Simple Little Life video of: Tool Time Tuesday - Granite Surface Plate. First video in a weekly series looking at some of the tools used in knife making.
Here is where I bought mine from: www.leevalley.c...
Also I just checked and I guess it's accurate to 1/10,000th of an inch. Which is crazy!
Another viewer tipped me to being able to buy affordable ones at WoodCraft. Thanks for the tip! www.woodcraft.c...

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

For lapping you should use figure -8 motion, because then scratches go in all directions and abrade across earlier made scratches, making the surface smoother. For improving adhesion of the surface you want long deep scratches to increase total surface area and to give glue peaks and valleys to sit in. This is why when preparing surface for gluing you want to use linear motion when abrading the surface.

Lol. Your set up looks just like mines. I got mines from little machine shop. The height gauge is an i-gauge. I have a 7 x 10 central machinery mini lathe. I’ve picked up surface plate and high gauge and now I’m in the process of getting a hand scraper. I want to straighten my bed ways flat. I’ve never really cut anything. And just taking it apart and doing some mods 😅

Friend! I don't have a very thick stone (100mm). I have a lot of 20mm stones. I intend to "work" 3 large diameter stones (1000mm X 1000mm). I think 20mm is too unstable for a big rock like that. Can I glue several stones to get a more stable thickness? I chose a harder black stone in my region of Brazil. I also thought about making ribs in the shape of honeycombs between a sandwich of two 20mm stones.

Great explanation on why this is beneficial. FWIW.....I got a great grante plate from my local dealer when we built our kitchen. Granite countertops, and they gave us a piece of extra granite they said we could use as a cutting board? I don't know why I would want to ruin my knives on that, but it's been great in the shop. Maybe others could ask their local stone dealers for similar scraps?

Sanding on a surface plate makes me cringe... :/ But everyone does it. Try putting aluminum foil in between the plate and the sand paper to protect it from the grit.

Well presented. Should be a good series - off to an excellent start! Worked for years in a machine shop & for fifty bucks these things have become essentially disposable compared to what they used to be! There are various hardness grades of granite. The black is relatively 'soft' compared to the pink and they all do wear over time. Should serve you well for years

Thanks! Yeah you're right. I couldn't believe the price of this when I saw it and it's better than even a thick piece of metal. Plenty good enough for the minimal accuracy required for marking out knives. Cheers!

Hi there, thank you for the video. Can I ask you? Wouldn’t the flatness be impacted by the very table or bench that the granite surface itself is sitting on?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 3 жыл бұрын
No. Not unless you’re in a lab working to tolerances in microns. Granite is very rigid and in a machine shop you probably couldn’t even measure a change in flatness from having it on one surface or another.

@@Simplelittlelife Thank you for the answer! That's good to know. Parallelism would right? I can't expect the granite surface to be perfect parallel sitting on a Ikea desk right?

A great source of flat polished granite on the cheap is contact your local granite counter top makers. They all have lots of cutoffs they want to get rid of. Often for nothing.

Would it be ok to use the block with sand paper to do make the sides of the knife flat? Or just for finish of metal? Running the metal over it like you've shown here with the scales. Or is that bad?

Hey Jeremy, would it be possible for you to do a quick video about using an angle grinder safely? I see them used a lot, bought one the other day and was just going to plug it in and start grinding. I had no idea that in the UK they are the Number 1 power tool for causing injury. Luckily I checked for a few videos first and stopped in my tracks. Im pretty sure lots of starting out knife makers will be doing the same as me, perhaps realising they are risking life and limb. Also the ppe vs no-ppe (or gloves or no gloves) argument is possible worth some coverage. Im new to metal work and only realized recently that some kit should NOT be used with gloves and sleeves etc because of the entanglement risk. Btw I caved and bought a leather stropping belt to go with my new belt sander...
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I could certainly do one on angle grinders. Although I typically use mine without a guard ( a huge no no) and the PPE idea is a really good one. Might have to get that PPE one up as a bonus video. How does the leather belt work for you? I'm actually looking to order one myself.
@TheWtfnonamez
@TheWtfnonamez 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks that would be awesome! You might end up saving a lot of peoples eyes, fingers and teeth by warning them of some dangers and especially teaching people basic safety with an angle grinder. I shudder at the thought I was just going to plug it in and start cutting 5mm steel bar with it lol. Ill let you know how the leather belt works when I use it first mate. Not changed belts on my little belt sander yet, but Ill rate it as soon as i use it. (fyi it came with white jewelers rouge just like yours.)

The manual DIDN'T say that this was the MOST common tool for causing serious and grievous injury. The manual didn't explain kickback, segment loss or shatter. The manual didn't say that statistically, Im now doing precisely the right thing to maximize my chance of losing an eye, a finger, or penetrating a sinus. Thank you for input, but some of us would like some expert input so we can operate these machines carefully.

Great vid! I subbed. The "Finding the centerline" tip was extremely helpful. Perhaps machinists know this trick, but to this weekend garage warrior, it was very helpful. I use a 12x12x1 section of granite to hold sand paper, and it seems to do fine. My weekend knife projects don't have to be accurate to the millionth degree, so I think even my granite would work on a knife blade. If my slab is off very much, it seems like when I scribe the second side my lines would not be parallel. That would probably be more of an issue with a longer item than a shorter one. And frankly, with my skill level and tools on hand, a Perfect centerline, and one that's Pretty Close, will probably come out looking just the same. Just Having a centerline will be an improvement.

Great video. Would love to see a tool time Tuesday with your welder. I have seen you using it and the last time I was welding I was using an arc welder with a welding rod. Yours doesn't seem to have a welding rod so would be very interested to know how it works. Regards, Martin.
