His mom had a stroke and was partially paralyzed for almost 30 years (10,000 days in the fire) before dying a few years before this album came out. Thats why he talks about the trials and tribulations she went through, and that none of them had actually been there. Its an amazing 2 part song and you did a great analysis of the lyrics, especially considering you had no context to start with.

@@BTPGumzTV To me those two songs go together with Toool - Grudge and Perfect Circle - Judith. Song Judith (his mom: Judith Marie Keenan) is about grudge he had with her and her religion/beliefs. Grudge is about letting that grudge go. Wings are him finally saying goodby to her after letting his grudge go. Check Judith first if you want to go further into that story.

My mother passed away in 2020 after having a stroke and being paralyzed and mute for 18 years. We read the lyrics about "Shake your fist at the gates, I've come home now....give me my wings" at her funeral. Probably not too many 72 y/o have TOOL lyrics read at their funeral.

He’s saying that she is/was such a “pillar of faith” and an exemplary human being that she has the unique right to bang on Heavens gate and demand to be let in and given her wings. 10,000 days equals the amount of time his mother spent in a wheelchair after an aneurysm left her paralyzed. 27 years. Arguably one of the most beautifully haunting and masterful pieces of music ever composed. Rest in peace, Judith Marie.

You have very good instincts, got many things right… but once you know the facts about his mum, 10000 days=28 years paralized , very religious… the song acquires a different dimension. No he doesn’t want to join her, he’s singing from her point of view now, she’s been a faithful servant of God for 29 years of her paralysis and before that as well and now, at the gates of Heaven, she’s saying give me my wings! That’s what he thinks she should tell God though I think she herself would be more humble. It’s his way of angrily telling God you owe her her wings of eternal peace after all her suffering.

Like that's what she should be saying to god for being so devout even though she was paralyzed for most of her life. i.e. she was the angel and she deserves those wings right away. no trials, no helping people like the movies or whatever. Wings right away.

She was very strong in her faith and when he talks about the collective judas, he is referring to her pseudo friends of her congregation. He's telling God that regardless what happened to her,that she still kept her faith! Like Jobe from the Bible, so she deserves her wings. He does not talk about these songs because he says he wishes he would have never put them on the album. Listen to Judith from A Perferct Circle and you will see how his emotions changed through her tragic death. Judith is before these 2 songs! Very emotional every time I hear these 2 songs.

I think part three could be considered Jambi. I know many have said it's about his son but it sounds more to me like a song about him by his mother's deathbed. Part 6 then would be "the Humbling River" by Puscifer as him coming to terms with it all and finding the understanding how to join her. A possible part 6 or maybe 4 depending on the order would be "potions" by Puscifer as he goes through the denial stage of grief looking to forget her but not really wanting to as he tries to cover up the pain.

This is a very difficult song for a lot of people. I'm an atheist in the way that Maynard also is, hence lines like "burden of proof thrust upon the believers." We experience spirituality too even if we have very different ideas about what those experiences actually are. This is a poem about reconsiling that spirituality with his mother even when she was religious and he wasn't. He still sees the members of her congregation as blind, well, cultists essentially. He sees their reverence as ridiculous given their epistomological take on reality, but he recognizes that their feelings toward the divine are similar to his own. To him, his mother is God at least at this point in this life because he has to let her go and recognizing everything that she was to him carries a meaning beyond anything else. Nobody could ever hold a candle to her, as he says. His anger has to do with the fact that her congregation doesn't see the divinity within her and instead praises her for giving herself to some outward divinity when really it was her that was the most important thing all along. It's hard not to be bitter about that when you don't believe in myths and monsters. So many of us are always surrounded by people who think their virtue is involved in how well they knelt to some higher power instead of how they stood up for all of us.
