Toolbox Tour - Diesel Apprentice

I am still in school and have been working at a shop for a little over a year. We do work on anything from gas pickups to RVs, old stuff, weird stuff, new stuff. This is simply a tour of my box. Comment below if you'd like me to make any videos or reviews, and don't forget to like and subscribe!

Looks like you're off to a good start. I'm pretty impressed with how much space that box has. Totally agree about the detents though. I have had a few of their carts and the one without the latches lasted about a year before the drawers would open every time you moved it. Then again my $2000+ matco cart does that too.

Great choice with the snap-on tools there so expensive you'll have them for ever. They don't break often and you don't loose stuff that cost like that. I've had some since 1983. Same with the tool box 🧰 but wait to make the plunge.

As a heavy off road diesel mechanic the best advice I can give to you Is to buy the tools that work for you. Don’t be a fan boy and buy from one truck because of a name. You’ve got a good start stay with it and you’ll be fine. Thanks for sharing

Starting as a heavy equipment apprentice...got a lot of ICON harbor freight stuff and it’s really nice. Got snap-on ratchets, they are definitely the best made, IMO. Harbor freight is literally less than a mile from our shop, so I buy a lot of Pittsburgh stuff. My theory is, if it breaks, then buying off the truck is justified for the better tool.

Watching you video you pick a great trade. Glade to see you don't think everything needs to be Snap on. 2 items I know they make well and will out last everyone else is there punches and hex head bits. Milwaukee makes the best when it comes to electric impacts need to watch what you buy some are lower end units others are unbelievable. Tekton makes song nice sockets, so are the icon harbor freight. Nice setup. I been a commercial truck tech for 20 years. I still remember what it was like being the new guy and being pressured into insane tool truck debt. Other guys would thumb their nose at buying off-brand or "farmer store" brands. Sunnex, GP and GearWrench make some really good stuff. You seem to be doing a good job of buying smart and not to much at a time. Good luck in your career.

Its knowing a balance qnd whats worth it im in yr2 of tech and I have alot of craftsman for free, bought myself some Milwaukee and cat because it was just to good to pass up, and have an sep discount which means if i wanna upgrade im better off picking up a snap on ratchet for the price of craftsman but i also got cheaper stuff form jobsmart, Pittsburg, icon, husky some cheap Walmart tools, skill etc

Have a half inch IR. That thing is bulletproof and gives some of the snap ons a run for their money.

I have the older ones that the selector goes through the side of the tool, they are over 10 years old and still going strong. My co-worker has the newish ones with the 2 buttons at the back of the tool, they are garbage not so powerful as mine.

I love my snap on and Mac tools!!! I have turned a wrench for 40yrs and when i started out I have always had a small payment with both snap on and Mac tools and I have kept away from cheap tools!! And I can see that you are off to a good start!!! Just keep a small budget for your tools and remember to always keep up your payments!! Because The tools maybe expensive on the truck but most tool your not paying interest on the trucks!! And just like you budget for gas, house payment and utilities as a mechanic you need to have good tools!!!

Tell Your co-worker to put some shims or washers between the front set of casters and the toolbox frame. That way it will tilt back slightly and the drawers will want to stay closed instead of creeping open all the time.

Looks like you were able to make a good compromise between high end tools and cheaper tools. That box will fill up in no time!

I try to go for value and build quality instead of name brand right now, thank you! I've been steadily buying more tools since this video was posted and it's already getting full. I'll probably post an updated tour next summer.

My 1" drive deep well impact sockets are GP, work just fine. Take it from someone that's been doing it for over 30 years. You can deal with the aftermarket boxes for a while I suppose, I kinda got lucky in the end. Ended up with two bottoms, one top, one hutch all Chevrolet Silverado special edition and 4 lockers; Then I got the "TOOL BUS", even got tags on it. Looks like your off to a good start, check with your tool dealer about used boxes. Every time I traded boxes I made money, I would get full retail trade and still get another used box. I worked my way up over 30 years and my box got damaged on the wrecker moving it to my current employer. After 7 months of dealing with the insurance company I got all brand new special edition boxes, actually 2 of them; Because they didn't make my bottom box anymore. Retail @ $38K, my next set will be around $45K so my 3/4" torque wrench will fit in my torque wrench drawer.

I’ve had a first gen box for about 4 years now. My detents still work ok. If you don’t make sure to push them completely closed they slide out. In my opinion lasting four years is pretty good considering the amount of tools I have in mine. I would like to pick up a nice box at some point but I can’t justify the payment. There are so many things I want more than a name brand box. I’ve seen many techs with really nice boxes and crap for diagnostic tools. I would much rather have a pico and several scan tools over an expensive box.

love the video man I am starting out too, I work in a International dealership while going to school, work on semi trucks medium/heavy duty diesel pretty much everything bigger than pickups, i posted a toolbox tour on my page, I have acquired a lot more tools since the video and will probably do a update next summer. I like seeing toolbox tours and seeing what other people have, it helps see what I might want to pick up,.

when it comes to boxes you really get what you pay for. i get it you are starting out, get your tools 1st and when you cant fit any more upgrade the box. i started out with a 26in carry box, then went to a 9 drawer craftman box, then into a used 2 bay matco box then into a 2 bay snap on epic box and then added a 5 drawer used matco roll cart/box. as of end of july i paid off all my tools. i owe zero. i been at my current dealership just over 6 yrs. only job before that was 18 months at a lube/tire center. i have the IR titanium 2235 max 1/2 impact . i love it. bout to get the milwaukee fuel bundle with the drill, impact driver, sawsall and 3/8 electric ratchet. i need to replace my old set.

Yeah I agree, you definitely get what you pay for. The top drawer has started to wobble a bit. But I figure as I grow my toil collection I'll end up outgrowing boxes, might as well keep it cheap while I can!

Most used tool in my box is my milwaukee fuel m18 3/8 impact, I beat that thing like a cheap hooker everyday working on semi trucks and it begs for more

I have a Gen1 5 drawer cart, and this Gen2 box is hands down better in every way. It's nowhere near as flimsy or cheaply built.

Um. Congratulations. It’s a great career. Been in heavy repair for 30 years. One thing tho. I wouldn’t waste my money on chrome sockets in the heavy industry. I don’t own a single chrome socket, and none of the clearance or weight arguments hold water.

Thank you, it's been good to me so far. At my shop we do everything from pickups and sprinter vans, to dump trucks and buses. I feel like they have their place. I'm working on the impact sockets now, going to be picking up some more soon. Congrats on the long career!

I prefer the drawer latch over the detent, but this does good for now. I have just about all the chrome sockets I need, I'm working on impact sockets next. I'll be picking up some 3/8 wobbles within a few weeks.

@@halloranoffroad6696 I would get snap-on swivel impacts because every other brand I've used the actual socket area is ok but the bases to them are so fat they are practically useless. Especially budget brands.

What kinda trucks you working on? I work for a Mack Volvo dealer and I am a master Mack Volvo Cummins tech and I use 1/4 drive sockets in 6 point more then anything and I use torx a ton as well and hex bits a ton as well

Do you use a lot of 12 points in diesel? You have almost no 6 point

I am a diesel mechanic and have pretty much only ever used 12 poinf without problem. Yes there are alot of occasion where 12 point fasteners are used. I bought my first set of 6 point sockets in 14 years the other week as i have been working on underground pachind more as nd had issues with the m8 bolts that where used on uni bolts rounding.

What tool box do you have on this video? I’m going for a Diesel apprentice interview position on Tuesday. If I do get hired I’m asking myself the question do I buy my tools and ship the toolbox to the shop or how do you normally go about bringing your tools to the shop if I get hired for position. Any advice you can give me I’m barely starting my career in this path I would gladly appreciate it thank you. Also I just have a basic Tool kit

I am in California and they say $22-27 an hour around here unless you go to a bigger shop which will have you push a broom for $18. If I go up north, 2 hour drive $32. I hate commuting. Will be looking to get a job after December. Gonna get my Class A this summer. Great thing about this area is if I go work in agriculture(picking), I can go to program for free that lets me get my class A. It’s set up to help low income people. However, most young kids 18, work for about a week and take that check stub to get into that school(CET). Do I actually need my class A? I am getting it cause it’s free and it’s 6 week course. All done after 5 pm.
