Yes. He thought it was too weird.

He understood children. This has more in common with “Le ballon rouge” (which I saw at the time, and, though I did not hate, I perceived as “the sort of thing grown-ups like”) than with “Howdy Doody”. And for all the awards UPA may have won, the animation comes off as cheap, rather than “minimalist”.
