100% agree about John Wick 4. That movie is absolutely made for the best systems. Cinematography and non stop action. If you want to show your system off look no further. That punching scene at the start sounded incredible. It left me in no doubt about the ride ahead.

Use to use the Lazer Disc for A/V demos. From the loudness of the helicopter to the quite of the equipment clanking; a great opening scene for atmosphere. Enjoy.

Especially the 2nd. Anyone who argues 4k streams are just as good is just wrong. But I think the audio on both is an even bigger standout.

The top 2 would be my pick too. Both in 4K are just stunning visually and audio. AVATAR TWOW came out in December 2022, and now the 4k disc in 2023 is amazing. JW4 is definitely the best release 4k in 2023. Great movie.

I got some 4k with the Blu ray will be Jungle Cruise,and Marvel Endgame I over heard 3d and 2d on the same disc is it on blu ray or on 4k disc

Great list Adam! I haven't seen devotion, but the rest of your list is pretty spot on. 65 oh man great disk, but what a horrible movie 😂😂. I loved Dragonslayer too. Hopefully we have many more great transfers on the way. Im going to BB today to pick up Evil Dead. So excited for that one.

Idk what you see in 65, I bought it and the acting/story not only sucked, but the visual effects were bad and the sound sounded normal. I'm shocked this got a 4k release, and Men didn't.

Spot on regarding Devotion. The disc is solid, but the absence of the Atmos track and its inclusion on Kaliedescape and iTunes kills the physical experience for me. When I spun it up and realized there was no overhead, I took it out and went straight to the iTunes stream. Maybe a boutique-like Turbine will produce one featuring an inclusive Atmos release in the future. Here's to hoping. Great list.

Since Devotion was a massive bomb, the studio didn’t want to pay the licensing fee for Atmos and the Dolby logo. Streaming is another beast as the movie will be available for decades. The disc may only ever get one pressing.

the best part of sound that john wick has is when the movie starts, when he hits the wood, incredible how you can hear the blows, then it's ok, but with that intro I thought the sound was going to be much better. Lots of gunshots all over the place, but it's not something we didn't see or hear in the other 3.

John wick 4 is a perfect disc imo I’d like to see a Best of Year by Year Video since UHD came out in 2016: Also an Updated all time UHD disc maybe top 20-25. I probably have most of the top discs since 2016 with a few exceptions. I probably have at the least top ten of all time.

8:08 I loved All Quite on the Western Front so much, the only thing that sucks about it is the English dub was only in 5.1DD at least on Netflix I don't know about the 4k disk.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is prob my fav movie of the year so far. Of course it’ll prob be 3rd after Oppenheimer & MI: Dead Reckoning. Seeing both of those in IMAX soon.

I waited and waited for Evil Dead on 4k but it was free on MAX. I watched it and the Dolby on MAX was excellent. My favorite 4k this year was John Wick 4. It may be the best 4K visual and sound I have seen in my home theater.

Streaming services dont really have the best audio or video quality, even if they claim dolby vision and dolby atmos. It will always be compressed, unlike the physical copy where you actually get uncompressed video and sound. Trust me, do the test yourself. A physical blue ray will look 1 million times better than a streaming 4k movie.

You are 100% on with this. If i like a movie that i choose to stream i buy it physically to watch from that point on. The disc is noticeably better every time. Especially with sound. Atmos isnt the same on streaming as on disc. @@rabideaul

Hello Adam and greetings from Munich Germany, with all due respect we have different ideas about 3D geat mixes! Good Dolby Atmos mixes (all 3D immersive audio Auro/DTS X) no matter if film or concert or music videos are those where a lot can be heard from above from upper hight channels and that was with Evil Dead and Avatar 1 (2022!) not the case in the cinema with both films there was almost nothing to be heard from hight channels saw both films at my local Dolby Cinema!

I have heard mixed things about the avatar 4k, increased resolution but no extended edition and inconsistent and strange color grading from what ive heard.

Agree 🐉 Dragon Slayer 🐉 100% i was ripped out off my recliner seat. I prefer 3D Auro and the Flying scenes were as if the whole dragon passed through me 😂 taking me away. Not only fantastic remaster, it looks Visually amazing for an 80s film, and + story telling is very good Enjoyable!!!! yes films once actually understood the Art of Storytelling. Im for 4k physical Disks all the way since they cant later be edited cut and Manipulated......like Al Pacino- Serpico

4k B&W usually looks great. We dont have a theater setup, so the sound is harder to judge than picture.

FYI, Found "Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone" in 4k UHD, metal case at Walmart in the $7.50 bin. It was not a pricing mistake either.

Why do so many people who do movie reviews on KZbin spend so much time on Dolby atmos? A very small percentage of people have Dolby atmos.

Its really annoying that these movie studios keep choosing to force you to buy the 4k transfers to get atmos when they could easily include it on the regular blurays as well. Not all 4k transfers are better enough than their bluray counterpart to warrant an upgrade but if you want atmos they force you to.

The fact Atmos is available on streaming but not on the disc should be an automatic disqualification from any best of list. That is pure shameful move by the studio. I can't and will not support that.

I got the 3D. I didn’t watch the full movie yet, but I checked out some under water scenes and it was gorgeous! Very nice depth and clarity. I am trying to decide if I want to double dip and get both Avatars in 4K, or just stick with the 3D versions.

If you are on the fence, I would just order the 3D. It’s been in and out of stock. As of this comment, it’s showing available for shipping. I would jump on it before it’s permanently out of stock!

Hmmm 5 movies on this list I don’t even own and those were new releases not catalog titles. I feel a separate list of just best catalog releases should have sufficed. Probably about 80% of the releases this year are catalog ones.

Don't know why a lot of people are praising the 4K of Avatar. Haloing, aliasing, edge enhancement... Some shots look terrible. Colors are good and very nuanced but HDR performance is subpar; specular highlights are not bright enough and I don't see better detail in bright areas than its SDR counterpart. The mix in Atmos is not that great either. Sounds a little bit compressed, bass extension is not as deep as reference mixes. Fortunately volume is good. The Way of Water in Atmos sounds much better btw.

Avatar is faaar away to be a top 4k UHD disc. The scenes with humans are terrible... It look like they took the actors from a wax museum... It really seems to be that many reviewers only watch some CGI scenes on the 4k and not the whole movie... Otherwise I can not explain the good ratings of the Avatar 4k. Only the HDR and the CGI scenes are looking pretty good - that's true.
