Yeah, it's a cool little movie and based on Willian Gibson's short story which gives it the pedigree. But as a piece of pure film its not on par with movies listed here. William Gibson deserves to be better represented on the big screen as he is the king of all things cyberpunk.

@@SubMatrix7 Maybe it's because it's complete rubbish. it is quintessentially cyberpunk but it's a really bad film and severely unfaithful to the short story in Burning Chrome. +BlunderCity But PKD did say repeatedly during his final days how proud he is that his novel is behind Blade Runner, he had really high praise for both the movie and the movie script ... he was really blown away when the producers showed him an unfinished cut of the movie and kept asking them something like "how did you guys do it ?", he also gave glowing praise for Harrison Ford (saying that he cannot picture anyone else playing Rick Deckard except HF) and Rutger Hauer... He said before dying something to the tune that the movie will be the single greatest sci fi movie ever made ... a lot of people would agree with that, including me ...

@@88feji I don't get your point. Making a good film and a faithful adaptation of a book are two totally different things. It's not about whether the film is good or not. james howe There is often overlap, however Biopunk explores some themes unique to the genre (Orphan Black is a great example of this, it is Cyberpunk but because it so heavily focused in on the societal implications of biotechnology it crosses the into Biopunk). But wherever you have technology which is exclusively biological (eXistenZ, the Engineers from Prometheus, Guyver: Bio Boosted Armour, Splicers RPG, the Tyranids from 40K and the Zerg from Starcraft, etc.) there comes a point where you can even have media that is no longer Cyberpunk (or at the very least barely Cyberpunk), and has wholly transcended into the realm of Biopunk.

A very loose definition of cyberpunk. Dredd, Robocop, and The Terminator don't belong here. Johnny Mnemonic and Metropolis and arguably Westworld, The Thirteenth Floor, or Videodrome do. They need to go back and read their William Gibson.
@primarch316
@primarch316 5 жыл бұрын
Gibson is the king of 'pure' cyberpunk for sure as he refined it into what most people think of when they hear word today. But the general idea is as old as science fiction itself and even goes beyond the genre. A story like George Orwell's '1984' would fit a cyberpunk setting perfectly as would 'A Clockwork Orange' by Anthony Burgess. Cyberpunk, to many, is classic dystopia through a digital, pop culture lens and by that definition, all of these titles will either, take someone to that Gibson holy land or, at least, point you in the right direction.

Uh, even Gibson admitted that there was no such thing as "pure" cyberpunk and it was the result of "creative cultural osmosis" so the urban dystopian material born from the Judge Dredd stories (especially the concepts of Mega City One and facist overtones infused into a supposedly free society ) contributed heavily to the cyberpunk genre. High tech, Low life. Cyberpunk wasn't so much an open embrace of technology and its effect on society as it was a rebellion against the space opera centric themes prevalent in speculative fiction at the time. Cyberpunk helped to bring planet earth back into the forefront of science fiction rather than things being set a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

That is a very thought out list and thank you for the effort. You forgot at least two more that could (and should) be part of your list: 1) Johnny Mnemonic written by the acclaimed cyberpunk writer William Gibson and directed by Robert Longo starring a young Keanu Reeves 2) Priest the movie of 2011 starring Paul Bettany based on a thrilling korean comic about a dystopian future where vampires, magic, cowboys and cyber punk technology co-exist often not so... amicably! Anyway, a great list nevertheless!

--Tetsuo the Iron Man fans should check out Eraserhead. --eXistenZ fans should check out Videodrome --Terminator fans should check out the Outer Limits episodes Demon with a Glass Hand and Soldier. Aside from Outer Limits, THX1138 is one of the earliest examples as it's from 1971--that is definitely worth watching today. See where the original ideas for a lot of these came from. BTW, what would be the year that "Cyberpunk" 's origin is actually linked to? RoboCop, and any Phillip K Dick originated film, are miles ahead of the others in terms of multi-level themes and philosophies, even with Arnold starring in one... casting makes all the difference. Imagine (gulp) Keanu as Roy Batty. Its why I have trouble taking The Matrix seriously...

1984 with Neuromancer as far a pure cyberpunk. It's only in retrospect that we see prior stuff as Cyberpunk related but it's quite easy not to see any of Philip K Dick's work as Cyberpunk. Those stories can be adapted for the screen in a variety of ways. I don't think you could possibly adapt a Gibson story in any other style.

Without slighting any of the entries on this list, I want to add for your consideration MINORITY REPORT (2002), A SCANNER DARKLY (2006), an early entry SOYLENT GREEN (1973), and a *very* early entry METROPOLIS (1927). You could even throw in SLEEPER (1973)! But really METROPOLIS should be in the top three.

There is one insanely important entry that I believe is missing here: Metropolis (1925, Fritz Lang)! Of course it was before the cyberpunk subgenre was formally defined. But since this great movie fills pretty much the description of said subgenre and was one of the most influencial movies in the history of cinema (and not just science fiction), I don't think it can be ignored!
