Top 10 Amiga Shoot 'Em Ups

I've been looking forward to making this video for a while. The Shoot 'em up, or schmup, has been one of my favourite genres for as long as I can remember. The Amiga has some classics as well as some really cool exclusives too. Take a look at what I believe are the top 10, let me know in the comments what you think.

Excellent list , mate ! I’ve not played Hybris and Wings of death , but I can vouch for the other eight masterpieces. My favourite is impossible to pick. But Apidya , Project X and SWIV are my top contenders.

Yeah decent enough list some of these. I personally would have placed Project X last though. To be fair although the Amiga was and continues to be amazing, it wasn't home to the best shooters when compared to console but I do particularly like how they felt on the Amiga. It did have some nice shooters though and Battle Squadren, Hybris, Apidya being my personal faves. Although very different to a full on shooter, Datastorm remains one of my very favourite Defender clones and I'd advise people try it

I'll agree to disagree. The magazines and The Bible (Lemon Amiga) say otherwise 😉 (And "Shmup" is another way of saying Shoot 'Em Up)

@@owenfitzgerald8944i used the word schmup in a reply to you, its an abbreviation of shoot em up, why are you telling me what i already demonstrated that i know 😅 you amaze sometimes owen. Anyway, shoot em up - Shoot 'em ups are a subgenre of action game. These games are usually viewed from a top-down or side-view perspective, and players must use ranged weapons to take action at a distance. The player's avatar is typically a vehicle or spacecraft under constant attack. Thus, the player's goal is to shoot as quickly as possible at anything that moves or threatens them to reach the end of the level with a boss battle.[10]

I'm fine with pretty much everything in this video - Apidya, Battle Squadron, Hybris and Silkworm being the ones I would put on top. But my heart sinks every time Xenon 2 gets included in these lists. I bought it back in the day. I'll never forget the disappointment: only 25fps (instead of the 50fps shooters are supposed to run at), the laggy controls, the slowdown, the poor playability., the hideous music.... Same goes for SWIV to an extent - that has the dreariest, most depressing colour palette ever seen in a video game.... But the four games I mentioned above are magnificent. And my number one Amiga shooter is not even mentioned here: Uridium 2: a masterpiece.

@ankeith Yes, sorry to sound like I'm all worked up! Yeah, it's totally subjective. I can't say what's BEST - only what I personally like. These videos are good for getting discussions going! Now that I think of it - and for what's it's worth - here's my Top Ten Amiga shoot 'em ups. I'm getting it straight in my head now! (Note: I never got to play Banshee so it's not on my list) 1. Uridium 2 2. Apidya 3. Blood Money 4. Battle Squadron 5. Stardust 6. Hybris 7. Silkworm 8. Datastorm 9. X-Out 10. R-Type Note: would love to put Project X on there due to its technical excellence & graphics - but I just did not gel with it at all. Something about the enemy patterns just didn't suit me...
