Auras are a generally weak type of card, due to the inherent disadvantages of them being weak to removal and easily getting 2 for 1ed. Despite that, a huge number of auras have left their mark on the game, so we’re going to cover them today.

I learned something about auras today and wanted to share with the comments section, in case there's other people like me who didn't know When normally cast, auras target and therefore cannot be attached to an opponents hexproof or shrouded creature However, if you return the card to the battlefield or play it another way without casting it (for example Sun Titan) it skips the targeting and goes onto the field, but as auras need to be attached to something, you simply choose a target to enchant without doing the actual targeting Pretty cool

That's why Zur the Enchanter is such a powerful card for auras since he can bypass hexproof/shroud and give himself whatever protection he wants.

Pauper Rebels decks, for example, have historically used this effect to win the Bogles matchup. Since they can tutor for 'Bound in Silence' at instant speed, they get around Hexproof that way while keeping their other options open until the best moment.

Then there's Skullclamp, which had a different story. WotC couldn't think of what it should do, and created its cost and effect we all know at the last minute. They realized the mistake- that it's the ultimate card draw engine for token decks- and banned it BEFORE it was even printed!

@@williamdrum9899 Feel like I heard it had the same card draw effect but was +1/+1 and cost 3 to play, 2 to equip. They felt it was useless at that cost in playtesting, kept making it cheaper in development but eventually decided +1/+1 was too strong and went with -1 toughness instead to make up for costing so little mana. Good way to use Daybreak Coronet There is a 1/1 hoplite that gains protection when targeted by a spell. Put something cheap on it to give protection to make it look like a good cheap attacked. Follow that with Day Break and Gift of the Orzhov. I’m sorry but a 6/6 with first strike, flying, and life link is scary. I did a stray like that but with Battlewise hoplite and had just enough protection in a blue/white beat down against a red/blue burn that the battlewise started at 2/2, then protection spells to gain 1/1counters, then those two cards I ended up swinging a 16/16 with life link, flying, first strike AND with all the scrying I did on my deck I was able to locate what I needed. My buddy’s response when I said “i am swinging a… 16/16 for game, do you have any response?” He relied “yes. Fuck you and your spooky bullshit. That’s game.”

I feel like Treachery could get an honorable mention on power level alone, but it doesn’t actually see any play outside of Cube and maybe Commander. But in Cube it’s an absolutely house, usually first pick material That’s the five mana aura that gains control of target creature, but then you untap five lands when it enters the battlefield. So it effectively costs 0 mana, and can even net you mana with cards like High Tide. Pretty much all the Urza block cards that untap your lands are very powerful and abusable

Some auras I love that go overlooked a lot are the Umbra series from a while back; they were basically designed to get rid of that 2-for and 3-for problems that you run into with other enchantments, as they can be sacrificed instead of the creature if the creature would die. I am a fan of layering them plus ethereal armors onto a kor spiritdancer; with the right draw I once got a turn 3 8/6 trample lifelink threat, if memory serves. Now, as a caveat, I'm entirely a kitchen table casual player who doesn't really follow format rules unless we're playing Commander, so I don't know if these are banned, or if there's a great counter for them that my playgroup hasn't found (and they hate that deck, I imagine they've looked) then I might be overselling them, but really they're just awesome additions to an enchantress deck to protect your other auras and the creatures they're on.

Freed From the Real is an enchant creature aura for 2u that lets you pay a blue mana to tap or untap the enchanted creature. You could use this as removal to lock down a creature by paying a blue mana every turn, but there are cheaper cards that do that better. Where this card really shines is untapping your own creatures. Notably, there are a number of creatures able to produce more than one mana, one of which is blue, giving infinite mana. The best of this bunch is Sanctum Weaver, which is an enchantment creature for 1g that taps to add x mana of any one color, where x is the number of enchantments you control. So you can curve a turn 2 Sanctum Weaver into a turn 3 Freed From the Real, then tap the weaver for two blue mana, untap itself, make two mana of any other color, untap itself, make blue again, etc. Since this card is a staple of enchantress decks, you can then usually play out some enchantresses, and then play out a bunch of enchantments to draw more enchantments and draw through most of your deck. There are a few other combos. Notably Bloom Tender and Faeburrow Elder, who tap to add one mana of each color for which you control a permanent of that color. For Bloom Tender, this makes infinite green mana if you control no other permanents, and Faeburrow Elder makes infinite white and green mana. They're sometimes good enough to go in enchantress decks looking to go infinite, but the inability to make infinite blue mana, combined with not being enchantments themselves really makes them weaker choices. Other decks don't consistently gain enough of an advantage from infinite mana that they warrant playing the combo, as it is pretty vulnerable to removal.

Little surprised Eldrazi Conscription didn't make the cut. Admittedly, I suppose it isn't a powerhouse in competitive play, but as the de facto "giant aura" that comes up whenever an effect that lets people cheat out auras is talked about, I thought it might make the 10 or 9 slots maybe. At the very least, I feel its existence kinda forces Wizards to be veeeeery careful about costing their cards that can cheat out auras.

It actually works under the rules just fine, and it's not the only card to enchant something not in play. (Animate dead does the same) It is however really, really wierd. I think the most rule - breaking card is Panglacial Wurm, due to how it bypasses priority when being cast, as well as having several rules that only exist because of it.

Pauper Bogles is a hell of a deck, too. It's not top tier but it's very very fun and even harder to deal with because there just aren't really any common boardwipes. There's a few that can wipe a board with damage, but bogles outgrow those in a real, REAL hurry. You lose Coronet, but you still have armor, rancor, hyena umbra, ancestral mask, and possibly most importantly, Cartouche of Solidarity, which gives you another creature in addition to +1/+1 and first strike on whatever it's enchanting, giving you an out to edicts too.

In the same vein as Spreading Seas, there's cards like Convincing Mirage. While the Mirage doesn't let you draw a card on its own, it lets you choose the type of basic land. This means that not only can you use it the same way as Seas but with greater versatility, you can use it to boost your mana production of certain kinds. If you make it a Waste, only a pure colorless artifact or an Eldrazi deck - and then, only some of the latter - can use it unimpeded. If you make it a Desert (that type was printed on basic lands way back in Arabian Nights), then even fewer Eldrazi decks can use it, though there is the downside of being able to tap it to deal 1 damage to a single target - I think just an opponent, but I could be wrong. Most people don't know that specific bit of knowledge about the Desert subtype, and most of those that do don't know what the card it was printed on actually did. Niche knowledge strikes again.

Actually, there is another way to get that much mana that quickly, though it is more restrictive in terms of color, outside of the Power Nine: Sol Ring. If you get really lucky, you could potentially get a TURN TWO ULAMOG THE CEASELESS HUNGER out VIA CASTING, though that requires four Sol Rings in your starting hand and getting both Ulamog in your hand and two lands out that quickly. If pulled off, it's a game ender, even if you don't go first. I can't pull off that combo due to only having one Sol Ring, but I can make up for it and use other artifacts to get him out by turn 3. If the land you start with can produce multiple mana, you only need one. Last time I checked, there are no ways to get turn 1 or turn 2 land removal besides Wasteland and the like, and they have their own downsides. The only way I know of to get a chance against that much mana that quickly is a Turn One Trinisphere to stall for a Stone Rain or other Land Removal, and that might not work fast enough. The only other way I can see to survive it is cheap creature removal that can either exile Ulamog or force a sacrifice from his controller, and the mana has to be tapped before Ulamog's cast trigger resolves. Unless you get a Kruphix out before then, you will have to make that removal instant speed, and then there's the problem of the cast trigger hitting Kruphix. Of course, the odds against it working are extremely high, though other multi-mana lands and nonland mana sources increase the likelihood. Thankfully, only the Power Nine and Rituals can get Emrakul out that quickly, though Turn Three is possible if Tron is pulled off that fast. Speaking of the Eldrazi Titans, Kozilek the Great Distortion is also a veritable game ender that can be pulled off as fast as Ulamog can in that combo, or even as late as turn 4, simply due to the card advantage, even if the opponent gets creatures out. Blocking Kozilek requires multiple creatures, so in theory, you can Turn One him without the Power Nine or Rituals. Even if you go first. You need basically the same setup as Turn 2 Ulamog I described, except you need Thran Temporal Gateway, which now that I think about it, can Turn One get any Historic card out in the right combo, though the Titans and Planeswalkers are the best ones I can think of.

Technically, Magic Arena is F2P, but the economy is garbage. I have little experience with unofficial simulators, and mostly used solo, but Cockatrice seemed decent. If you have a printer and a camera (even your phone's), you could print proxies and play on Spelltable - I believe the Professor from Tolarian Community College has an open Discord to find groups. Lastly, and that's a bit of a stretch, there's Magic Online. The UI looks dated, and it costs money ($10 initial purchase, which is given back as tickets; leagues & other events cost tix; you have to buy/open your cards) BUT it's IMO the best simulator out there and, if you're not going for competitive play (aka, not buying the pricey staples & not paying for events), the game's super cheap. There are people playing casual in the main formats, Commander is very popular and non-optimized decks still do well, you even have formats like Pauper (commons only), Penny Dreadful (fan-made, 1p per card, discounting lands you're looking at half a buck for a whole deck), and even digital-exclusive Momir Basic (RNG fiesta but it's fun, only need to buy 1 avatar once to play). Also, if you want to try competitive without spending too much, you have rental services to just pay a few bucks and get whatever $$$ decks you want for a week.

Time for some honorable mentions: Wheel of Sun & Moon - CMC 2 (White and Green, either color can be used). Enchant Player. If a card would be put into enchanted player's graveyard from anywhere, instead that card is revealed and put onto the bottom of the owner's library. A 2 mana Enchantment that requires dedicated removal and hard counters all mill strategies is pretty good. Couple that with the shenanigans it can provide by targeting a player that wants cards in their graveyard (i.e. Dredge) and it's a fun card for all... except those who hate it, and fuck those people. Flickering Ward - CMC 1 (White). Enchant creature. As Flickering Ward enters the battlefield, choose a color. Enchanted creature gains protection from the chosen color. This effect doesn't remove Flickering Ward. W: Return Flickering Ward to its owner's hand. 1 mana protect from any color is solid. Add to it that it can be bounced back to your hand if the attached creature is going to die... makes it better. Then you include decks that want you to spam out Enchantments because of the bonuses you get when they enter the battlefield... its very nice. Screams from Within - CMC 3 (2 Black + 1 generic). Enchant Creature. Enchanted creature gets -1/-1. When enchanted creature dies, return Screams from Within from the graveyard to the battlefield. A single copy of this card can devastate token decks. When you pay 3 mana and end up killing a dozen+ creature tokens, that's efficient AF.

You missed the main reason Spreading Seas currently sees a lot of play: It's very good against Urza's Saga, which is a very common card in the format. Sagas sacrifice themselves when they have no more chapters remaining. Spreading Seas gets rid of all of the chapters. Therefore, as soon as you enchant Urza's Saga with Spreading Seas, the saga goes straight to the graveyard, and the Spreading Seas draw a card still happens, even. Therefore, you get a two-for-one for two mana (very good) on top of it being a land destruction effect at 2 mana (very good), which is a huge blowout.

@fwg1994
@fwg1994 Жыл бұрын
The other problem is that enchantment and land used to just be a very rare type to have removal for, making it essentially equivalent to permanently exiling a card against most decks. Prismatic Ending and a few other recent cards can very efficiently answer On Thin Ice on top of efficiently answering other common threats in the format. Since there's a lot more removal people are running that just incidentally answers On Thin Ice, it starts to become a lot more of a liability.

For those who complain about why TheDuelLogs didn't bring up Auras while comparing with Yu-Gi-Oh!'s equip spell cards, this explains better. As we can see, auras have a lot more utility than equip spells and are more creative in how they are used and done. Are auras the equip cards of Magic?

Kinda but equips only affect creatures while some auras enchant other permanent types so they are more versatile

Sort of, but Magic also has a subtype of artifacts literally called equipment
@markpridemore7603
@markpridemore7603 Жыл бұрын
Think of Auras as like buff spells in an RPG. You apply the buff spell, now the creature can do a new cool thing. There are artifacts called "Equipment" which are your swords and armor and such, but the main difference is that if the equipped creature dies, the equipment sticks around because in-universe, it's a real object, not a magical effect applied to a guy.
@Folfire
@Folfire Жыл бұрын
Its the best comparison as equipment (the artifact counterpart) stay on the field if the creature is killed, why auras depend on the creature and just like equips, will be 2 for 1'ed. Auras can sometimes be attached to other type of cards. Auras are a little more popular than YGO equips because there is not common removal for them, barring destroying whatever it is attached to, which are common. However, that means if you put it on a difficult to deal threat, then that aura will likely stay in play and be huge.

You can abuse the Triggers for "On thin Ice" with any instant lad sac outlet, so the returning resolves BEFORE the exiling, leaving the target creature permanently exiled. Roiling Regrowth will even ramp despite the just lost land. Can even abuse this further with Conduit of Worlds to play sacced lands from the graveyard, and might even situationally recast "On thin Ice" once per turn if nothing else makes sense.

Are you Aware of CEDH? That is a subgroup for Commander that is way more competitive. I'm not a participant of it, but they can pull of fast combos like in other formats. It's harder to pull off any 2 turn kills, but 3 and 4 turn kills are way more consistent. Thassa's Oracle is a common sight in those kinds of deck if not Aggro.

EDH is pretty much ignored on this channel, which I can understand due to how much more they would have to take into account. Seems like it's a focus of either EDH or 60 card min formats on most channels for that reason.
