I watched Tron the day after watching Guardians of the Galaxy on 3D and I found that Tron's use of 3D was lackluster. There were times when I had to check if my glasses were turned on. It has very nice cinematography though. I would recommend Guardians of the Galaxy and Pacific Rim. Those really impressed me.

I own an old Samsung smart TV from 2013. It has 1080p, the most important apps still work (Netflix & Prime Video) and IT HAS 3D. For all those years that I have this TV now, I absolutely enjoyed the 3D feature. It looks GREAT. Even the automatic upconversion that works with every normal 2D source is really cool. For some movies like the Hobbit, my jaw dropped to the floor when I played it on this TV that is older than half a decade. It looked absolutely comparable to cinema in terms of depth etc. To expand further on this and to keep supporting the market, my girlfriend and me, we just got a 3D projector to watch 3D movies in XL in our other room. It's gonna be awesome. Unfortunately, there are no TVs anymore which offer this feature. But let's keep working on keeping the 3D blu ray market alive, at least. Home theater gets such a huge boost in quality through 3D!

It’s 2020 and I don’t believe the 3D format is 100% dead. Sony top-of-the-range Laser Projectos are still 3D and 4K. Got one last year (760ES) along with an Oppo 205 and a 123 inch screen. 3D Goodness. Marvel movies look better in 3D than they do in 4K (because of their 2k DI and 2K CGI ...) Anything shot in space is awesome in 3D (Gravity, Startrek, Star Wars ...) I’m enjoying it thoroughly. Still a great time to be alive!

Agreed. 3D isn’t dead at all. It will be back. Glasses-free 3D TVs might be what brings it back. But also, the increasing popularity of VR is putting 3D screens in the hands of millions of people. Surprisingly most VR owners don’t understand this fact, and are surprised when they learn that they can watch 3D movies. But sooner or later it will start to become more known. The more content available for a device the more you use it and value it, and the more value other people see in buying VR headsets.

Kevin, Great Video as always! I have to agree, Polar Express and Avatar are some of the best! Hugo? Holy Moley is it AMAZING in 3D. Watching Hugo in 2D is now a sin :) I am a bit surprised you picked, The Amazing Spider-man. Not too impressed with that one. Most of the film looks 2D to me, sans the fight scenes between Spider-man and The Lizard, which do have some compelling 3D effect. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I picked up How to Train Your Dragon 1&2 3D on import, as well as Gravity and The Walk. Can't wait to see them! I thought I'd send you some of my 3D recommendations. Maybe a couple will interest you. Sorry in advance for the long-ish list. I just fell in love with the 3D platform! You're blog site, Save Bluray 3D, has been a HUGE help to me, and I wanted to return the favor! Thor Ragnarok - If you see only one movie off this list, make it Thor Ragnarok! This one has to be seen to be believed! Quite possibly the best 3D movie EVER! next to... Ghost In The Shell - Some didn't like the movie, I actually enjoyed it, but words simply can't describe the immersion this film has in 3D! You won't believe this is a conversion! Five animated films you simply can't miss in 3D are: Madagascar 3 (especially this one!), Wreck It Ralph, Beauty and the Beast, Harlock: Space Pirate, and Coraline! These movies will have you picking your jaw (literally) off the floor! SO Recommended! The Great Gatsby - MADE FOR 3D... PERIOD! Simply stunning in 3D! If you enjoyed Hugo, I think you'll really love the look of this one! Three additional Marvel Movies that look great in 3D are Doctor Strange (vertigo central "in a good way"), The Avengers and Ant Man! Giant Monster movies don't get better than Kong: Skull Island and Pacific Rim. The 3D is off the chain! VIY, or as it's also known, Forbidden Empire. Unfortunately this is Region B only, but makes a very compelling reason to get a a Region Free Player! I have the German release, which also comes with an English track, incredibly well done! Fantastic 3D film! Again, sorry for the length of this post, but again, thank you for keeping me in the loop on 3D Blurays! Your review of Spivet was impressive, so I’ll definitely be watching more of your reviews. I’m fairly new to it, having largely discovered 3D a mere 6 years ago, but have attended the NSA 3Dcon 3 times, done 3D photography with a variety of cameras and rigs, done some image conversions, collected many movies books devices and images etc, and am admin of a few related Facebook groups, “Stereoscopic 3D” and “Let’s Convert 2D Images to 3D”.

Your blog is great, please keep it up while the format is still alive (crosses fingers) I have a bunch of movies on this list but I did not was Life of Pi. WOW! So glad I finally got around to watching it! It was a great movie, beautiful, and yes definitely one of the better 3D movies. So naturally I had to check out Billy Lynn's long halftime walk next.. good movie too. Is it a great movie? No but it's pretty good. Again, also very visually appealing. 3D really works well with Ang Lee's style. It's too bad it was such a flop. It was even ahead of the game with respect to frame rate and 4K.

Excellent 3D review. My 2012 Pana 3D plasma died so in order to keep 3Ding I took a chance (gulp!) on an ex display LG 3D E6 OLED - reference 3D display. I'd include among others Dr Strange, Pacific Rim and for well rendered 3D demo purpose and some child friendly charm A Turtles Tale which my now mid teen daughter loved. Our Christmas 3D Zemeckis film is and always will be his take on Dicken's A Christmas Carol. P.S. I also use the Darbee Darblet. A hugely underrated device.

Yeah it’s sad to see it going the way of the dinosaur, but it’s mainly because 4K is the new thing and 3D Can’t be shown in 3D. Having a 3D TV was an ok experience, I now finished my movie room with a projector and it’s by far the best experience for 3D. It’s like being in the theater. 120” screen is amazing compared to my 55” LED 3D TV and highly recommended a projector over a TV for 3D if you can. Plus all my Samsung glasses connect to my Projector which is a win win!!

have just got my LG 3d TV back from my daughter after I decided 3d was not for me. It is now set up in my den 50inch screen and my chair is approx 5 ft away. My 3d films look amazing. I agree the cinema experience was far too dark, I am using the simple glasses that were supplied with the TV, and it as a whole new viewing thrill. For me, this closer view has put 3d back on the map, fully engrossing. I Will admit for most people this is not going to be very practical, and one will tend to watch alone, but if you can, then give it a try.

Further update - just got hold of the Alita 3D movie - in the UK you have to buy the 4K and the 3D is bundled with it. James Cameron has managed to produce one of the finest 3D films of all time - the 3D is so natural. Interested to hear your review of this as you chose many of my favourites in your top 10.

Doowopsid for me Jaws 3 in 3D is truly pop out it’s literally in your living room. I found it on eBay it’s the new version 3D & very hard to find without finding a copy that uses the Red/Blue glasses also other amazing pop out in your living room movies are Journey to the center of the earth part 1 & 2 & A turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure (2010) & Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise (2012) (Sammy’s tale part 2 in 3D can be a little hard to to find in 3D BUT you can find both on EBay. I bought part 2 from China & it’s region free & in English) , Hugo, Tron Legacy, All 3 Hobbit movies (all were shot in 3D and have great depth and pop), ALL THE SUPERHERO MOVIES LIKE, Spider-Man 1 & 2, Wonder Woman, Thor, Captain America (All 3) , Ant-Man, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Guardians of the Galaxy (Part 1 & 2), Green Lantern, Dr. Strange ect, My Bloody Valentine, Avatar, Final destination 5. I know I listed 26 movies but they’re amazing pop out movies & all these movies are really good as well. Here’s a tip for buying these 3D movies, I buy ALL my 3D movies on EBay & many of my 3D movies I’ll buy just the 3D disc only & they’re really cheap that way but if you want the 3D movie & the blu Ray you can still get these movies on EBay for really great prices. John O thank you very much for sending me your list of suggestions. I’m 68 years old but am also a big 3D dvd fan. I know that a lot of people appreciate the depth that 3d movies have but I really am impressed with the true impact of the 3D effect when things appear to extend beyond the screen at you. I have around 40 3D dvds and have several that you mentioned and agree with you for the ones I have. Thunder and the House of Magic is also a good animated one with lots of pop outs. It’s also not that well known and a bit hard to find but you are right that there are many for sale on EBay with most at reasonable prices.Drive Angry with Nicholas Cage is somewhat raunchy but has several neat pop outs. I will have to look for Jaws 3! Thanks again for taking the time to respond with lots of detail!

I like your choices but here are four Blu Ray 3D movies I own that I also think anyone with a 3D TV should own. House of Wax, the Vincent Price original of course, Dial M for Murder, Kiss Me Kate, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. All of them look amazing and make the 3D home viewing experience the next best thing to seeing them in theaters.

I would add some other movies like: The Croods, The Rise of the Guardians, How to train your Dragon 2, Wrath of the Titans, Infinite War, Jupiter Ascending, Deathly Hallows 2, Avengers. I think the animated movies are the best about immersion at any space, so the first 3 movies are awesome!

I really liked your review...I agree with you on many of your top 10 picks...I haven't seen Hugo and How to Train your Dragon but I will purchase them and see...I do agree 100% on your #1 pick (Life of PI is definitely the best of the best!) In my opinion though Maleficent 2014 3D should be in any top 10 list...I actually would put it at # 2 on mine. I dont think there is anyone making 3D sets now in the states now so I'm praying my Visio holds out until they (hopefully) start producing them once again.

I respect your opinion on Tron: Legacy, but it's one of my favorites (whether or not it's critically good is up for debate, but it's definitely enjoyable in my opinion). Plus the visuals and soundtrack are fantastic. I don't own a 3D TV, but there's thankfully some workarounds that let you watch 3D Blu-Rays with a VR headset and an application called Bigscreen, which lets you watch movies in a virtual cinema and host virtual rooms (public or private) so others can watch with you. Bigscreen is one of the last stands for 3D, since 3D is still popular among Bigscreen users and Bigscreen also offers 3D movie rentals through a partnership with Paramount. 3D content is a lot more accessible through Bigscreen, since you don't need a 3D TV or 3D Blu-Ray player and if you're wanting to watch one of the Paramount rentals you don't even need to buy any 3D Blu-Rays (although if you want to use those you can, you just have to rip them first). Hopefully Bigscreen will grow in popularity and get more studios to sign on for 3D movie rentals, which would allow for 3D movies to still be accessible.

You are right, Tron Legacy is one of the best. Superb music, too. It DOES have a good story (albeit a little long). Again, Upside Down is really cool (great premise, a planet with TWO gravities).

Guardians Of The Galaxy in 3D is a great 3D Experience. I have almost every 3D Movie ever made. I use a 3D Projector in a dedicated theatre. I can't believe you didn't select Guardians. I like all your choices. Except I think Guardians should have been there also. From the research I have done. It's not that 3D is dead. 3D Disc sell very well over seas and are in demand. Problem is Disney saw a drop in ticket sales. Which is why FROZEN 3D was pulled from released a week or 2 before it went on sale. All stores had advertising, special sets. And then it was stopped. Since then Disney, who owns Marvel, Lucas also stopped releasing 3D Blurays in North America. I would search week after week. And finally I got the answer. Tickets sales were down. So to ensure ticket sales go up, the released a statement saying that from now on all releases that want to be seen in 3D a premium format will have to be seen at the theatres with theatre ticket prices. Without basically saying it. That's when the big turn and switch came to "Is 3D Dead." I my opinion this was planted by Disney themselves. And all the companies they own started to follow suit. I know it sounds crazy. But I love 3D and have followed it my whole life. 3D Movies are still being released. Discs can be purchased from other parts of the world. And sales have been great and on forums the demand is still there. - Toronto, Canada.

Much as some people hate Disney, Frozen and Tangled are worthy for the quality of their 3d. Action films - Aquaman ..you can see the money on the screen, and a bonus, this film has uncredited Auro 11 speaker sound if you have the likes of a high end Denon Amplifier. Any Minnions film is great...Wizard of Oz if you can find it...had to import from Italy

Since you like pop outs, I believe you'll definitely love the two short films from 'The 3 Stooges' inside the Mad Magician Blu-ray, Jaws 3D and all movies from the '80s, plus both Piranha 3D and 3DD, etc... I love that too, but I also love the 3D experience for its immersion and natural feeling. I hope one day you'll realise that the 3D immersion is quite a great experience as the gimmicks are. One thing doesn't exclude the other :-)

Dude........We don't need imax screens. |The best 3d will you ever see, is through VR headset. VR headsets have the capability to show us the real 3d, not that fake 3d from cinema.By the way, with virtual desktop, some home cinema speakers and VR headset, you will have better experience than in a cinema. In VR the movie is just in front of your eyes, 3d tv??? no way, is shit. Buy a VR headset buddy

I LOVE my 3D TV. Favs: Upside Down, Tron Legacy is awesome (great music/soundtrack, too), Titanic, and Mad Max Fury Road, of course! Avatar’s subtle P.C. message bugged me. Polar Express bored me, sorry. I have approximately 150 3D blu-rays (even Terminator 2 and Star Wars IV Hope). Great Wall also great.

Dude none of the ones I recommend are on your list. How about Dread 3D, Mad Max Fury Road 3D, World War Z 3D, Predator 3D, yes! Predator in 3D is amazing eventhough it was converted to 3D. I just ordered Blade Runner 2049 in 3D. I've yet to watch it but I hear it's mind blowingly good.

@@philippelarouche2407 It's an LG Signature 65" 4K, model OLED65G6P. From what I understand, it was basically LG's top of the line for 2016. I got it at BestBuy when they were getting rid of all their 2016 stock to make room for the 2017 TVs. It was the floor model. Got a decent price on it, but unfortunately there is some burn in, apparently from them leaving it on for hours on a menu screen of some sort. Fortunately it's usually not noticeable. Only on a few certain colors. Another down side is, it didn't have the box or packaging material, and this thing is not only huge, but extremely fragile, so it's a pain to move around.

josh ThisIsStupid it wasn’t gimmicky, but watching 3D and had me questioning the format on the TV, as it wasn’t great, but had some titles that stood out. Now having a projector and watching 3D it’s amazing and well worth watching 3D movies on, and keeping the technology around as I try to buy 3D when I can.
