Italy is my absolute favourite, because of the change of landscape, beautiful cities, density of very good small roads, food, wine, accomodations and weather. Also a tip to anyone cycling through Europe, Switzerland is the best country I've ever cycled in, don't be afraid of elevation or of their crazy prices! The Swiss are incredibly outdoorsy so finding somewhere to camp was easy, even if looking in a residential area I was always offered some land to pitch my tent often without even asking. There are bike trails all over the country and smooth concrete switchbacks if you want to take it easier on the ways up. If you're worried about the prices, I easily went a month there without paying for any accomodation, and lived quite comfortably on less than $5 a day - just stick to going to Lidl! Best wildcamp of my life was pushing my bike up past Zermatt and sleeping on the side of the Matterhorn. Not to be missed!

Thanks for mentioning Switzerland. Just allow a bit more budget if you want to try some local Swiss food. A coffee and croissant costs already more than 5 CHF. And whats traveling without eating local? Try to avoid mountain passes on weekends in the peak season. Even you don't like Switzerland you can reach a neighbor country within a day. All neighbors are also worth a visit anyway.
@cycloneranger53543 жыл бұрын
IMO Swiss people are very 'rules first' . Coming from France we found people heckling us over riding on "footpaths" and doing other random things. Nice to hear you had no problem camping where you pleased but I wouldn't be surprised if people were calling the local police to tell you to buzz off. While it is an incredibly beautiful country, you certainly pay for your stay, even if you bivouac.

Can't speak for Iran or Mexico, as I haven't been. For me the others are all good choices, except Australia (one of the most racist countries I visited, and a traverse of Australia involves weeks and weeks of unchanging dull outback) and India (though you do say cyclists stick to the North of India - definitely the best bit of India for cycle touring, the big cities while never dull are so crowded and tiring, and road infrastructure poor and too busy). I love different things about the other 100 or so countries I've toured and couldn't rank them in order, but if pushed I would have to include New Zealand, Japan and France high up my list.

I'm an American who has toured approximately 35,000 miles over 40 years in several different countries. The six months I spent in Australia was my favorite tour and the first time I used a mtn bike. Everyone who visits there will see animals and plants like no where else in the world and the people are very welcoming. I also really enjoyed New Zealand for the same reasons. Another place I really enjoyed for the remoteness and wilderness is Northern Canada and Alaska. A coast to coast ride across Canada in the summer is an unforgettable. I've been all over the U.S. but it is getting to scary with the amount of traffic. One exception is a ride along the Continental Divide route which is mostly gravel road or the Trans America Trail (an off-road motorcycle route) again mostly gravel. I did the Baja Divide route recently and agree, once you get passed the border towns, the Mexicans are very welcoming people.

I feel like New Zealand is a really underrated pick. Whenever I read a blog with mixed opinions on NZ, it’s because they’ve stuck to the main roads. Agree. NZ's best spots are generally away from the busier highways anyway, but there's a fair bit of inconsiderate driving here, so that's another great reason to head down quieter roads. There's a bunch of money been put into developing cycling infrastructure here recently, which is nice to see. The whole Covid thing has forced Kiwis to explore NZ, so that's helping locals become wiser about life on the road.

I've traveled a lot, not by bike, but outside of Asia, it was very hard to find a place that felt welcoming. As a person of colour, this kind of has been my fear about traveling by bike solo anywhere for fear of standing out and just not feeling safe in general. I've found that most bike touring people who document themselves are white and don't get the same treatment as I did just traveling to places in Europe, India, US, or Australia (though I found them to be mildly racist, they were the nicest people I met even though they were and would love to go back lol). We just finished cycling Turkey at the end of last year, never really saw the appeal of it myself. There were kind people but then for every kind person we'd meet there'd be someone who'd try to scam us or would make us sit through some nationalistic speech about how Turkey is perfect, and the greatest country on earth. We only followed the north coast and so we probably missed out on loads but the roads going east were full of shrapnel giving us regular punctures and lorries passing wayy too close then blowing the horn in our ears to say hi. Also given the level of population density we found finding wild camp spots incredibly difficult. Not quite my cup of tea 🤷♂️
@Cyclingabout4 жыл бұрын
I guess everyone has a different experience. I don't remember any nationalistic speeches, scamming, difficulty finding campsites, close passing traffic or punctures (I definitely had zero). I personally had a difficult time in Georgia though, which is often touted as a favourite in the region. I think a series of bad luck, meeting the wrong people and harsh weather conditions contributed to this. As soon as I crossed into Azerbaijan it was like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders - making me later realise that I was probably in the wrong mindset to enjoy Georgia all along... next time!
@oscarejdonovan4 жыл бұрын
@@Cyclingabout I think the time we went to Turkey may have affected things, we were there when Turkey had just invaded Syrian Kurdistan so that might've made some more adversarial towards Europeans. I remember one of the days we were there it was Turkish independence day so we bought big Turkish flags to fly from our bikes - at a petrol station a man came over and forcefully pulled our bikes towards him so he could adjust our Turkish flags to make sure they were flying perfectly upright 😅 Can definitely relate with Georgia though - we also had lots of crap weather and the driving was even worse than Turkey. If you go back I'd recommend ditching the bike and going hiking in the mountains as those have been our best days in Georgia by far!

Thank you. Al lists are partial but you got the votes in - but who did you ask? Europe must surely have the best developed cycle routes, allowing you to explore not just safely away from traffic but quietly. I would rate Japan - safe and friendly and incredible culture. Northern Spain, Southern Germany/Austria and Italy (although less cycle paths so traffic an issue but then Italy is Italy). All power to the Central Asian explorers but that is too extreme for most of us. Also we have to be honest: I know Central America and Turkey well - wonderful destinations - but I wouldn't wild camp in these places owing to safety (and I speak from experience..).

Due to non-existing equality in most developing countries, solo males and females are treated way differently in those countries. "Epic" cycle tourists that travel the world probably crave exotic and new places where prices are good and it's easy to camp. Europe is great for credit card touring and for its expansive cycle routes, but it's not so friendly on the world-traveler budget, nor friendly to wild camping.
@shredfreak834 жыл бұрын
@@ZenoLee0 unless you book in advance you risk that campgrounds are full, that makes it very unfriendly for travelling cross country.

shredfreak83 Atleast around Germany and neighboring countries this hardly ever happens. And even then the next camping ground is usually like maximum another hour away.
@huhummmmmmm4 жыл бұрын
@@Dooojooo And in Scandinavia and Finland and the baltics etc. you have "everyman's right" - so you can camp whereever provided you follow the ettiquette, e.g. don't set up a fire in a forest when there are forest fire warnings.. keep your distance from houses, and keep your rubbish. You'll also find a network of free cottages and lean to shelters in some areas. Iceland is a great place to cycle. From north eastern Finland to Norway as well.

@@ZenoLee0 I do most of my touring in Germany as that's where I live and I basically always camp wild and never had any trouble, I rarely even get approached. Just be considerate and not overly stupid and you should be fine.

My top three are The Netherlands (or Holland), The United States, and Belgium. Holland was an absolute revelation for me. Fantastic cycling paths with dedicated signage, easy cycling in the cities, beautiful countryside, lots of camping, history, friendly people, spectacular food, wonderful beers, and the most laid-back and welcoming spirit anywhere.

Oh nice content. Just been recommended by KZbin =) subscribed. Amazing Turkey! Hey, I'm about to move to Melbourne/Australia, are there any bike movements around there? Are there any talks about doing a bike path on Great Ocean Road?
@Cyclingabout4 жыл бұрын
Cheers! Maybe search Facebook for "Critical Mass Melbourne Australia" group, or volunteer your time at "Ceres" helping to fix bikes, or drop into Commuter Cycles, Velo Cycles, Abbotsford Cycles or Curve Cycling bike shops to meet people who are into bike travel. I don't think you'll ever see a bike path along the Great Ocean Road, but there is lots of space on the side of the road for cyclists, and during the week there are very few cars.

@DhakaDough3 жыл бұрын
It is very much contextual. The hospitality I have got in the USA or Canada or Mexico might miss-match with yours (if you are from a first world country). From the west coast to all the midwest, even the house with the confederate flag, I have got the best hospitality with free food, ice-cold water even got picked up from city park, free camping at KOA But my fellow riders have not got anything as they were either from a different state or country ( perhaps the perception of the economy and same skin color may play any game). There was a difference between Yukon and Ontario to me. Likewise, my experience in any Muslim country (being a Muslim and from a 3rd world country) would be way different than yours. (Wish to see what Kamran feels) Turkey is a great country by its culture and its landscape but general people are prone to like Westerners than Easterns. I did ride across New Zealand but could not even start in Australia in 2008. Maybe things are different now. But we live with our experiences. Your picks are great. Very well sorted and you are a great watch. Peace be upon you.

I've done a lot of touring, but almost all in Europe, though I cycled Cape Breton Island in Canada, once. I've been to none of your top 10 countries. I've toured most of Ireland (I'm Irish), a lot of England, a little in Wales, many times in Scotland, numerous times in France, Spain, Germany, also in Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Greece, Andorra, Denmark. My longest tours have been 17 days but I've done 87 tours in all. My favourite places in all of these. 1.Camino de Santiago, in Spain. 2. West Coast of Scotland. 3. Coast of Co.Cork and Kerry, Ireland. 4. Corsica. 5. Bordeaux to Nice, France. 6. Mosel plus some of Rhine, Germany. 7.Strasbourg to Nice, France. 8. Malaga to Sevile and back, Spain. 9. Lands End to John O'Groates, End to end uk. Done 4 times. 10. Tour of Yorkshire, UK.

However, having cycled through 30+ countries here are our top three and this is not an easy thing to come up with because each and every place we've explored has it's own special place in our hearts. Hi! The best country to cycle in Europe is Spain. Reading the commentary juste before mine, saying Switzerland is great... I'm Swiss. Just travelled in october 2020 from Geneva to Podgorica passing trough german Bavaria, the Austrian Alps and Croatia. In Switzerland, too much trafic and prices are crazy! Croatia is very nice, but there also, there is trafic (even in the small roads). About Turkey, I agree. I cycled from Geneva to Damascus in 1990: great! Not easy though! Spain is the empty country and safe, and secure! Crossed last summer from Malaga to Pamplona in 8 days and 48 hours: fantastic!

@@Cyclingabout Partly agree with you. But look at the "arc of crop burning" that starts in September in Indonesia and go North to India via Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Another major issue is that in these countries they don't collect rubbish. So locals dump and burn them. It's actually pretty bad in Thailand and Viet Nam.

Ok, I guess now everyone would have their own opinion and rightly so about what country they like but I can't believe Canada's west coast isn't in the list - the rockies, the glaciers, the thousands of km of old railways tracks turned into bike trails, the dempster highway all the way to the shore of the arctic ocean, the okanagan valley, forests, national parks such as the world famous banff, jasper and rain forest of the northwest!.
