Nice list Mike. My top wouldn’t be all that different as far as many of the authors. I’m not as sold on The Wandering Inn yet, and probably just won’t take the time to continue with it. I have it about 400 pages. My backlog is just too long along with all the other backlists and things I’m into. :)

I really like that your picks are not necessarily the most popular book tube picks and that you always articulate your reasoning well. I am about 50 pages to finishing the Farseer trilogy (R Hobb)... not sure why I delayed reading it for so many years. Pretty sure it's a top 10 series for me, but need time to reflect :) Excited to tackle Ship of Destiny and the rest of her books.... just need to take a 1-2 book break first, lol.

I enjoy the fact that you always have a unique top ten. I recently started The Grace of Kings based on your recommendation but I'm really struggling. The writing is just too flat. I expected much more refined prose and dialogue. Was hoping for something more stimulating. As a writer/editor I can't get through two paragraphs without rolling my eyes. Not quite dnf'd though. I'll see how much further I can go.

Love how you eschewed the usual Booktube rules and included multiple books in the same series. Speaking Bones was my fav of the Dandelion Dynasty cuz I have a strong bias towards strong endings I think. Demon in White and Bonehunters are both in my top 5 of all time!

I've enjoyed this - the one series you've convinced me to add to my TBR is The Dandelion Dynasty (your other favorites have either been read or already added). I notice your list is '80's and beyond. There are some great 60's & 70's works that would be worth your time, like Zelazny's Amber series, McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern (no need to go past the first 2 trilogies), and Le Guin's Earthsea books. Also, I'm highly interested in Tolkien's absence from the list....

My top 10 list hasn't changed any since last year. WoT still dominates my list with 4 out of my top 10. Along with Jordan I have books by Sanderson, Abercrombie, Gemmell & Erikson in my top 10; we only share one book in our top 10's and that is The Bonehunters, it's my favorite Malazan book. Chapter 7 is still my all time favorite single chapter in fantasy and Y'Ghatan is my favorite battle scene. I have added five new 5 out of 5 star books this year taking my lifetime total up to 25, lol. The Lost Metal by Sanderson (#14 overall ranking), King of Thorns by Lawrence (#20), The Blackest Heart by Durfee (#21), The Traitor by Ryan (#22) & The Bands of Mourning by Sanderson (#23) all hit 5 stars. I have kind of relaxed my criteria a bit in the last year or so; I don't think any would have been 5 stars a year ago. I have several from your list on my TBR; not sure when I will get to all of them as my TBR is HUGE, lol. But maybe some more of your favorites will get 5 star ratings from me next year, lol.

Your review of the Grace of Kings stating that it was a retelling of Chinese History has me extremely confused when I was reading it. I probably should have realized it wasn’t true when they were flying around on kites dropping fire bombs in the first chapter, but it ended up being around the point that they rode into battle on the backs of giant mechanical narwhals. So yeah, I think there may be some confusion there

I’d say that he uses his own technology (I mean, he _is_ an engineer) in the books, but it’s very much culturally Chinese inspired. Like battle kites did exist in early China! Maybe not during that specific time period, but they were in fact a thing! Look up the Wikipedia article “Man-lifting Kites.” One of the earliest uses was in ancient China. It might not be _as_ cool as they are in the books, but the technology isn’t the main thing that he’s retelling, it’s the events and how everything turned out.

Picked up Sun Eater based on your and other booktubers' recommendations. I found it to be a very compelling, well-told story, marred by immersion-breaking, extreme far-left nonsense that renders it virtually unreadable. It's practically a caricature of "wokeness," and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. Which is a shame, because it did have some great moments, and such amazing potential to tell a unique and genuine story. Chris Ruocchio went for cheap pandering to modern-day publishers instead.
