I agree. How could a 16-year-old deliver a musical interpretation we'd expect from someone perhaps twice that age? Besides the obvious answer of natural talent, I'd guess that performing with her sisters from before her 3rd birthday had given her experience and the chance to absorb a lot of know-how by observation - something gifted children are uncannily good at. Recommendation: Check out her performances from the ill-fated Judy Garland Show that aired on CBS for a single season ending in 1964. The show had its problems (hardly her doing, in my view), but it has some amazing musical performances, both solo and in collaboration with other great singers.

@@Mezzotenor , Judy herself wondered why she was able to have all her natural musical skills to arranger and vocal couch Rodger Edens . She was so very gifted as a very young child and knew all the technical skills and knowledge of someone in their 30's! She thought maybe she must have been reincarnated. She said how else would I have known all of this when I was singing at 6 years old? I've never believed in reincarnation etc but this truly makes sense with Judy and all of her enormous natural talent and gifts. Later while she was doing concerts in the 50s and 60s , she said that every time she gives a concert she dies a little. I never understood this remark until just recently. In each of her concerts, she always gave absolutely everything that she had in her being, soul - living each word of every song she sang. She also did the same thing whenever she acted in her movies. This explains why she was so very weary after each concert and in her movies. No one ever gave nearly as much as Judy gave to the movies and concerts. This is mainly why she aged so badly-Lorna luft has quoted that from 1950 to 1969 she performed in over 1200 concerts. Everyone quickly says it was because of the drugs. However, the drugs were the only way that she was able to fullfil these inhumane obligations. This poor lady singing Non-Stop from 1950 -1969 was completely wore out! Judy has said that she gave her blood when she sings. 🤔😓 Carol Burnett who occasionally knew Judy was asked by a biographer what she thought of Judy. Carol (who had always been a very big fan) knew the whole story of Judy . She said to the man "bless her heart".😓😇

"Better Luck Next Time" from Easter Parade, and the little remembered "It's Love I'm After" from Pigskin Parade (she's so young and already so incredible). Also, absolutely staggering is a song that wasn't used in For Me and My Gal, called "Three Cheers for the Yanks". It shows off Judy's range, rhythm and diction. She was an unparalled singer. You can blame Jack Warner for that. By the time the film went into general release, it had been hacked to death on Jack Warner's orders so that local movie theaters could make more money with more showings of the film. The general release version ended up leaving vital scenes out of the film, causing it to be hard to follow by audiences. Those that were lucky enough to see the road show release got to see the film as it should have been seen. Anyway, the truncated version was what the Academy judged her performance on, and there was also a lot of Hollywood prejudice against her because of her inability to cope with the constant pushing of MGM during her final years with the studio. While Grace Kelly's performance was good in "The Country Girl", it certainly was not Oscar-worthy.

Garland is a legend. Her films were fantastic. "Over the Rainbow" was saved by uncredited producer on Oz, Arthur Freed, who went on to help Garland's career with MGM as well as one of the only people in her life that wanted to help her with her addictions. It was because of Oz's success that Freed got his own unit and went on to produce some of the greatest musicals ever made, An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, Showboat, Gigi, if it was an MGM musical, Freed was most likely involved somehow.

As a serious Garland fan of nearly fifty years, I had a few quibbles. First, "You Made me Love You", from Garland's first feature, "Broadway Melody of 1938", is much more touching, and historically important than "Listen, Darling's" "Zing!" and, frankly, should've taken its place. Also, "After You've Gone", and "But Not For Me" should've topped out "Embraceable You", as both are significantly more important in her classic film moments. Lastly, the Oscar-winning "The Atchitson, Topeka and the Santa Fe" should've topped out "I Don't Care", as it' one of single greatest musical numbers ever filmed, and is far more powerful, visually and musically. Honorable mentions should've included Garland's haunting "Look for the Silver Lining", an easy bookend to "Over the Rainbow."

For all of my Gilmore Girls fans...A Star was Born with Judy Garland is the same one Lorelei was watching when Like and her broke up after her mother Emily's meddling in her daughter's love life. The scene plays out as Lorelei sitting in her living room sulking in the couch starring at the screen holding back her tears. Meanwhile, back at Luke's Diner Emily Gilmore pays Luke a visit. Another performance that should have been considered was Judy's appearance in Broadway Melody of 1938. Judy plays a girl whose mother is trying to get her into a producer's next big show. Obviously she's got the talent. But Judy's big number is at her home where she is writing a fan letter to her favorite actor Clark Gable. She sings an original intro that leads into the classic song You Made Me Love You. This moment was also featured in the first That's Entertainment movie and was a highlight of that film. In BM38 Judy even got to do a short dance number with Buddy Ebsen in the big show finale. They almost worked together again in The Wizard of Oz with Ebsen as the Tin Man, but he had a bad reaction to the tin man makeup and had to be replaced by Jack Haley.

Fabulous list and I know it's a tough one to put together because Judy was great in just about every single performance, but I'm honestly surprised "But Not for Me" from Girl Crazy is not mentioned. I also really adore "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" from Ziegfeld Girl. Either song could utterly break your heart and Judy is exquisite in both the vocal and visual performances.

I never knew Over the Rainbow was almost cut from the film, it’s such a good song!! It’s also cool to me how she still made a good appearance in the movie even though she got treated LIKE HEEEELLL while filming.

There really are two 'Judies': movie Judy and the concert Judy - a self she created with the brilliant help of Kay Thompson the cabaret legend. Concert Judy perfected all the heightened drama and personal tics, hand gestures, the feet wide apart stance, the 'sweep away arm' and even the 'hair grab'. But most importantly she brought the intensely personal and unique voice of 'concert judy'. Judy made Kay Liza's godmother.
