If you have a medical condition that requires frequent checks by a specialist, or if you are retired and anticipate needing special treatment as you age, Oahu is your only option. Kauai, Maui, and the big island have small hospitals with some services, but for major illnesses or specialized care, you will only find that on Oahu.

“How can you be stressed living in Hawaii?“ Easy. The high cost of groceries, gas, and housing. The low salaries. The high traffic. Being far away from your family/friends on the mainland. Difficulty being accepted as a local due to racial tensions. Friends constantly moving away because everyone is being priced out. Homeless people everywhere. Prevalent meth issues. Political corruption and a laughable police force. People really need to do their homework before they up and move to Hawaii. Unless you’re a trust fund recipient or a Powerball winner, you’re going to struggle in Hawaii. Do yourself a favor and stay on the mainland, where you can actually afford a home, childcare, and groceries. Save Hawaii for a vacation.

I just moved from Maui in October after 9 years for elder care reasons. It was the best experience of my life. I was living off grid up country Maui in Haiku with limited electricity in a 2 story tree house with no hot water. For me up country Maui is like no other place. We are at about 1300' elevation, trade winds 99% of the time and a night sky that takes your breath away

An interesting and pretty accurate take on Hawaii. As a former resident of The Big Island, I thought the take on Hilo and Kona was pretty accurate. I loved my 7-year stay in the Hilo area and always thought of it as old Hawaii. One thing I quickly learned was you don't move to Hawaii and try to change things, rather you just try to fit in and act like a local.
@ccbrother2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that it is pretty accurate but they forgot one thing about the Big Island, the volcanoes. I guess you can say that it is like any other natural disaster like a hurricane, that comes maybe a decade or more apart, but there aren't too many places on Hawaii island that is safe from the effects of an actively errupting volcano. Other than that, the Big Island is a wonderful place.

Aloha, I do believe you've been beaten up enough with the pronunciations and so I am certain you know that for anyone in Hawaii, they were hard to listen to. But let me give a little perspective from the stand point of a non native resident homeowner from Kailua Oahu. It IS very expensive, but no more so than large cities like LA, or San Francisco, . However, you will find shopping for groceries and such costs more because we are in the middle of the ocean and goods need to be shipped here. Once you adjust to the sticker shock, you forget it and go about loving the island life. There will be chores, shopping, bills and all of the regular commitments that will keep you from living life like as if on a permanent vacation. However, your free time will allow to explore and enjoy everything here to your heart's content. Staycations are the BEST here. Nothing like a weekend at a hotel that others save to come fly to and visit. Crime, meth, other drugs - better than where I moved from, but homelessness is worse. I think folks compare crime to what Hawaii used to be like and forget that crime is increasing everywhere. Native Hawaiians are incredibly kind and gracious when you show respect and become a positive part of the community, but there are a few haters just as there are anywhere in the world. My house is smaller, my dollar does not stretch as far, but I feel incredibly grateful to call Hawaii home. The Aloha spirit is a real thing, and folks are just kinder to each other. There is a saying, "Lucky we live Hawaii!" and I agree!

If all roads lead to Rome... Then all flights lead to Oahu (especially for islanders)... Sure life is hard and it's a struggle.. but it depends on what one wants. Some comments are about all the ill's and vices but what place in America doesn't have those problems (especially cities). Even when I was struggling, scrounging and not eating everyday, I could always surf or hike or cruise around. Many people I know started out with crap jobs and barely making it.. but many grinded it out and made connections and improved their situations. Plus Honolulu has great parks and it's free to find a spot grab a grill and enjoy life a little. And Honestly for me... it is Paradise...

I first lived in Hawaii (in a Quonset hut near Pearl Harbor on Oahu) in 1955-1956). My father was in the Navy, so we returned (to two houses, the first in Radford Terrace, the second in Foster Village) in 1959-1961. I returned to visit many times between the mid-1970s and 2017 when my wife and I purchased a condo on Molokai. Two years later we bought a house in Maunaloa. Thank you for not mentioning how fabulous life on Molokai is! And we're just a short (under 30-minute) flight to Honolulu or to Kahului, Maui. Molokai is definitely not for everyone. In fact, I doubt ten percent of the U.S. population would find life on Molokai to their liking. We're simply far too remote for that. But Molokai is THE old Hawaii. Molokai is my wife's and my favorite island. We do our major shopping at Costco, WalMart, Target, etc. on Oahu. We ship the larger items to Molokai via Young Brothers barge. Molokai is truly no ka oi! Thank you (mahalo) for a very nice video on Hawaii!

Wow that was super insightful. I'd love to visit Molokai one day and experience a more traditional Hawaii. Definitely planning on many trips to ALL the islands once we can afford to move to Oahu! Glad you enjoyed :)

@@FromHeretoThere Didn't expect to hear back from you at all, let alone so quickly. You made a fabulous video. My wife and I were married in November 2011 about a year after my late wife and Debbie's dear friend, Leah, died. Deb and I honeymooned at the Westin hotel in Ka'anapali. While there we purchased a timeshare at the Westin resort also in Ka'anapali. Two years later we purchased a second timeshare at the same resort. We returned to Maui and Oahu each year for our anniversary and for the annual ceremony honoring Pearl Harbor and U.S. entry into WWII. My wife fell in love with Hawaii. It was then quite easy for me to "encourage" her into moving to Hawaii---just as long as she didn't have to live on Oahu. We discovered Molokai in 2014 when we spent all of five nights at the Wave Crest resort on Molokai. Our next trip to Molokai led to the purchase of a condo at Ke Nani Kai (which we sold this past October). Next time you and your wife visit the Aloha State, contact us via either of my two Facebook pages: Andy McKane and Pearl Harbor McKane. We've got a guest room in our 4,000 plus square foot house. You can spend several days as our guest at no charge. (On Molokai, you will need a car. There is a Alamo car rental agency at the airport at Hoolehua, a small business in Kaunakakai that rents pre-owned cars, and at least one individual known to my wife who rents older cars for $35.00 per day. We call Molokai "the Island that time forgot." Mahalo for your rapid reply. We look forward to you and your wife coming to visit and to share some hot Molokai bread with us. (Check out the various videos about Molokai by Ted Kanemitsu. He is a fabulous photographer who was born on our beloved Molokai.) Mahalo again for your wonderful advice on our 50th State! Really? I can't believe somebody is actually posting about Maunaloa. That's probably one of the best places on the island because it's at a higher elevation and pretty much cool year round. I grew up there during plantation days. The family (me and my siblings) inherited my parents house off Iliahi Pace on the slope above Hotel Moloka'i. We've all moved out of Molokai but we still have relatives there. Unfortunately, I haven't been back there to visit them in awhile.

As a local resident, please, PLEASE, don't move here if you are not serious about living here for a longtime, acclimating to the culture, and leaving behind mainland/foreign mindsets. In any place you go to, tourist life is different from local life and it gets worse when we have rich foreigners/mainlanders coming here and buying out land making it expensive for locals and the generations to come, difficult to live here. Also it doesn't help having military people come here and treat the island as their vacation home. In our case, our home is a finite area, you can sit your ass down if you think of treating this place like your future passive income advantage as well. Come to visit, it'll be great, but if you want to move here, that's a whole other beasts you have to learn to deal with.
@Eaglejake3 ай бұрын
Sorry to break the news to you, but what you just described as "advice", happens everywhere on planet Earth. Those that have not lived anywhere else parrot your same paragraph. Hawaii is an isolated series of islands (1 of 76,000 on the planet) in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and produces nothing but good weather, beaches, sun, and surf......as with most tropical islands. Tourism is all Hawaii has, and it's not changing, so you are going to have to deal with the transients/tourists/guests/visitors. "Culture" is everywhere, and yes, you need to embrace it, or be left out. Don't fight "Supply and Demand", as it is the most powerful force in the Universe. The demand is high on most tropical islands, but the supply is low, therefore prices are high. This isn't China....people can't buy homes or land if locals don't want to sell. To help your endeavor, I always recommend the Caribbean Islands, to people interested in Hawaii, as you get to visit foreign countries, different culture, same weather (minus the surf), water is warmer and clearer, prices are cheaper, closer to most of the people on the Mainland (vs Hawaii), and the people are much nicer.

I'm a transplant from the Mainland, for these past 10 years, and I really do relish the pleasure of living here. Suggestion: You really need to do more research on properly pronouncing the names of the towns and islands used in this, and any other videos you may do about island life. Even as a former Mainlander, myself, it was in bad taste on your part and bordering on disrespectful to butcher the names of so many towns and islands.

You won't have a large yard though. -If you want to live in Hilo, you can live right outside of it, property values are much cheaper, but you'll have to commute. Uptown is probably a lot better for family raising, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Waiakea are all in one location! Its not too bad for a small town school. You can have large properties, big yards. You have to like rainforests, though, no white sand beaches. They're all on the Kona side. Big island is good if you don't like crowds. -Kauai has many great small towns, but like the Big Island, lacks a lot job opportunities. Although it's been a while since I've lived there. -Kailua is fantastic, a lot family and relatives live/lived there. I would walk to the beach in about 5 minutes, it's great. Its about a 30 minute commute to Honolulu (that's without traffic, over the Pali). My parents have pretty much lived in every town and area on Oahu, they know it well. Lots of job opportunities. I can ask them questions about Oahu if you have any, they know the island much better than I do.

@@FromHeretoThere except mililani has many parts that are very expensive and it also usually takes longer than 30 minutes north or south with the traffic

Hi!! Please do a segment on underrated Phoenix, AZ! Californians are literally flocking here to live! A beautiful home is about 1/3rd the price of a home, vs. in California. Gas is much cheaper. November thru April, it's actually quite pleasant. People automatically assume it's hot here year round but, it's NOT!! Thanks in advance!! 🏜😃🌵🌄🕶

I'm 28, & know of several people I grew up with who moved to Phoenix. One of them recently bought a house, & I couldn't believe how nice it was, as they're not exactly banging out high six-figure earnings. Money definitely seems to go a lot farther there!
@marcchatow95163 жыл бұрын
@@Tyrosine0910 Yes, it's definitely cheaper to live here, vs. Many other cities, it's slower paced, too, than a lot of other cities, & people are nicer, if you can just get through about 5 months of brutal broiler oven summer heat!! Ugh. 🔥🥵🔥

If you're not rich, don't even watch this. I'd rather save my money and find a beach house to retire to in Italy, Spain, on a little Greek island, or even in Mexico.
@bastian_anibal3 жыл бұрын
Greek is by far super expensive by this time, and when we are allow to travel again they will jack up prices there easy 300%. Take spain instead!

You should do a 10 best places to live in Canada for all 10 Provinces

Don’t forget Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. I know they technically aren’t provinces, but they are still part of Canada. :)

I can tell just by the video that each island has a different feel to it. Almost as though they’re detached even though they’re all the same state. I’d love to move there someday but when & how would be a whole different thing I’m in no place to do that right now

What’s with ranking places based on their proximity to a Costco?! I live in Kirkland-birthplace of Costco-and I never shop there.

I grew up in Kailua (Oahu) in the 70's, Little League (go redlegs), elementary school, uncles and aunts, Holiday Mart, Da Bus, the whole thing and I still can't believe that it's become so well known and therefore, spoiled. Blame real estate companies and the internet, tourist buses, the second tunnel. We never thought it was special. Still so strange seeing the beach park or Lanikai (where I spent a whole lot of time, back when there was more beach) on these lists and other places.

I'm surprised you didn't recommend Puna. It's affordable, close to the coast and you get to know your neighbors and the community real quick. Pahoa is nice too. Kalihi valley is a great place as well. Hahaha Good luck to moving to #1 on your list.
