🌟 About this video:
So one day, I got thinking about what is the best selling fragrance right now across different countries and how to work it out... I'm not sure I've entirely succeeded here, but this was the best method I could think of to give a "global snapshot" of what the best selling fragrances are right now. Here I present lists of the top 10 biggest selling perfumes for 10 different countries according to Sephora's website, but was each country's website truly showing the biggest selling fragrances?
From the research I've done around this topic, I've come to the conclusion that best selling perfumes lists are very unlikely to be accurate given the amount of information for collation with multiple different sources. I think most best selling lists will be very limited in the retailers that they capture or the fragrances that they monitor, which will highly influence the results. In fact, I questioned one creator's blog of the world's top 10 best selling perfumes and she blocked me for asking questions about her information sources, so I think that says it all... basically no one knows...
Please let me know what you think of these perfume best seller list snapshots for Sephora 1st September 2023 and whether you guessed your own country's top 10 perfumes of the moment if it's here...

I agree with you , I think Sephora is making up that list to sell fragrances, I live in Canada and being a fragrance collector, I never run into people wearing those fragrances, most people here have never heard of Armani prive , so there is NO WAY 3 are best sellers . If you live in rural areas it’s a way to get these fragrances without driving 2-3 hours to a city. But still not that many people are ordering these expensive fragrances, especially blind buying at that price ! They probably have too many sitting in the wear house and hope people order of the list !! From what I smell I would say , ysl black opium, poison girl , ysl libre , Valentino Donna , good girl CH , Lancôme le belle , etc trust me …. We do not have a lot of bougie people here, 😂 🇨🇦

Yes, those were totally my thoughts, I found Canada's list totally unbelievable 😂 I guess it is what is being purchased that day/week though, not what people have purchased overall or what people wear. I feel like I should give Sephora some benefit of the doubt but yeah, it's unbelievable 😂 those are what I smell here on people too, there's so much lveb about. Those and Cloud! Thanks for watching 🥰

Yup I agree, east coast of Canada and I smell black opium all the time people have raved here about that one since high school and I hate it 😂right now Dior actually is just like a meme so I think it’s a little trendier at the moment but yeah this is not what I would say would be a top sellers list a true one I should say.

I'm from Poland and I also agree with that. I've never heard of many of the scents on this list. Moreover, fragrances such as Clean Reserve Saugaro Bloosom & Sand, Chloé Atelier, Lady Milion Royal, Aqua di Parma Cipresso di Toscana do not have any reviews on the Polish Sephora website. The other fragrances mentioned have at most a few reviews. And real bestsellers such as La vie est belle have 170, Black opium has 124, Carolina Herrera Good girl has 130. So it is absolutely impossible that the fragrances indicated in the list are bestsellers. The only fragrances on this list that are at all known are Chanel Chance eau Fraiche and Mugler Angel, but I also don't think they beat the real best sellers I wrote about above. So I think the whole list is fake.

Excellent research and I’m inclined to agree with you regarding how this plays out with Sephora. It is a store known to put emphasis on certain brands so there may be something to your theory that an agreement was reached. I also take into consideration that a lot of the stores, at least here in the US, only provide testers for certain brands in store so people may not purchase others because they can’t.🤷🏽‍♀️ I also see Sephora as a store that caters to younger less seasoned noses and Chanel may be seen as that stereotypical “old” fragrance house. Who knows. But I find it quite interesting again how marketing and in some cases unconscious bias do influences choices. Have a great weekend!

Yes, I think you covered everything there, that is a great analysis of everything that could be going on here. I think the demographic using the Sephora website is going to be quite select. When I think of Sephora in the UK, I think it mainly people who are really into beauty that use it and people with more money, so that makes the results here skewed and might explain the Tom Fords being in the top 10. The lack of Chanel could be due to the age of the people buying for sure! I agree, not having testers for stuff really changes what people choose in store. I don't think most people are comfortable blind buying in stores, that's why people visit them in the first place. Thanks for your opinion on this! It's insightful. 🥰

It would be interesting to look at the most popular high street department stores in each country. I think a lot of people still buy their fragrances from a counter in department stores. I agree with you that the top winner seems to be more of a sponsored choice than a truly popular choice.

It's really odd and a little disappointing isn't it? I did look at the best sellers like that in the UK, I looked at 8 other stores, but I thought I'd make this video instead as I thought it would be more universally appealing. Chanel is the only one I would expect there and maybe Angel as well. Wow, Dr Smith! I was so impressed by this video! Thank you so much for your effort to bring us this info. 🙂 I learned so much about fragrance pertaining to retail sales, apparent country preferences, etc. When fragrances appeared on these best selling lists that I'd not considered seriously before as a collector, my first thought was to check for more data on Fragrantica. It appears Fragrantica users do not necessarily like all of the best sellers. That's another interesting angle, I think: fraghead preferences vs the preferences of those who buy trending fragrances at retail stores like Sephora. I'm sure you could think of similar content to make via Fragrantica data. Although, sadly, you'd not be able to parse out country or regional preferences. Thanks again!! I'm sure I speak for so many when I say I love your channel content! 🦋🧡🦋

Thank you ❤️ Yes! I definitely think there's a split between what the general public want from fragrance and what they choose as opposed to what people who love fragrance want and what they choose. Marketing has a huge effect on the general public and established brands tend to do very well with sales. Pulling out Fragrantica data would be fascinating. I'm amazed that Fragrantica haven't done that themselves. There would be endless articles for them to write! 😂 Thanks for watching and for your lovely comment 🥰

Hi Claire thanks for this interesting breakdown. I am always curious as to which perfumes are loved by various places around the world. This list below was generated by a few Australian retailers. Sounds right when I look at it but I think this covers the 2021/2022 most popular sales so things may have changed slightly this year. 1 Black Opium Eau de Parfum 2 Coco Mademoiselle Eau De Parfum Spray 3 Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum 4 Super Amber Eau de Parfum Ellis Brooklyn Super Amber Eau de Parfum 5 Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet Eau de Toilette 6 La Vie Est Belle Eau De Parfum 7 Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum 8 Flowerbomb Eau de Parfum 9 Beach Walk Eau de Toilette Maison Margiela Replica Beach Walk Eau de Toilette 10 Santal 33 Eau de Parfum Le Labo Santal 33 Eau de Parfum

Thanks for the list for Australia! That's really interesting! ❤️ I think the thing that strikes me about a lot of these bestselling lists is that what are they including and what are they excluding. It's strange to me that Baccarat rouge, a fragrance costing many times many others and not widely available multiple retailers would sell more than others that are cheaper, much like some of the fragrances on these Sephora lists. I think assessing these bestseller lists in magazines etc really shows that ultimately people publishing them need to be more transparent about what these lists actually measure and what is and what isn't included. Thanks for watching 🥰

Forgot to mention but availability is also a problem. I'm from Brazil! I'm loving your content and binging a few videos! The Sephora website doesn't sell Chanel here, but they do sell Dior. I find this list interesting and I have some theories... I never tried any of those on the list, because we have here a variety of very strong nacional brands of perfume and the 'common folk' like myself don't usually buy fragrances from the Sephora website -- it's a very boogie site indeed selling imported and very expensive items to people looking for 'traditional/ estabilished scents' (just my opinion) -- maybe thats why the best sellers on the list are 'old'... I don't have any imported perfumes and I'm ok with that! I love my collection, it's much cheeper, much suited to the tropical climate, much to my taste and my appreciated! Thanks for the content! 😊

I really only chose the brand as it was seemingly the only one available the world over. I can understand how these won't be the best sellers in general for sure. It's interesting that Sephora carries Chanel in some countries and not in others 🤔 I'm sure the local fragrance industry is alive and kicking in Brazil, it makes sense to make fragrances that suit the location and climate 👌 Thanks for watching 🥰

... I'm Polish-Canadian and lived most of my life in Canada. I looked at the Polish top ten and realized that I have never seen a single Acqua de Parma, Guerlain or Chanel in a Canadian Sephora. Come to think of it the men's section is mostly stocked with Montblanc and Dior and new releases. If I want a designer I'm better of going to Shoppers Drug Mart or The Bay. Better selection, better price and better loyalty program. Only reason to buy any perfume from Sephora is if I want something more expensive and don't want to drive up to Toronto or blind buy it online.

I'm really not sure these lists are very likely to be the true 🤣 I am not sure Sephora is being entirely transparent. But yes, same here, the Sephora stores are solely in London, hundreds of miles from me, and if I were buying online, it would unlikely to be from Sephora as they are expensive. It was the only store that I knew existed in so many countries though so that's why I chose it. I think doing this video has shown me what utter rubbish bestseller lists are in general, they are biased by which stores / websites are sampled and what they stock. There's no way to combine lists from different stores without detailed sales breakdowns, which of course I don't have access to. I'd love to be able to study this in a more accurate way! As we used to say tho: garbage in, garbage out. I’m a little suspicious of the integrity of Sephora’s data; they have ulterior motives I’m afraid. Still cool tho. It's everywhere, billboards, magazines, everywhere, this driving the sales up. To me that scent is just ok. I love the original Gucci flora though.

Hi, Brazilian here! 🫡 The list is pretty accurate for sephora, but most people here don’t buy perfume from there because the value of our money is very low (1 USD = ~6 BRL) + shipping taxes make everything terribly expensive. Thus, only the upper class shops frequently at Sephora. To have a more clear view on what brazilians are wearing perfume wise, I would look at these brands: - Natura - O Boticário - Eudora The most worn perfumes by women will vary according to the region in Brazil, but are definitely among these: - Floratta Red (O Boticário) - Liz (+flankers - O Boticário) - Egeo Dolce (O Boticário) and Egeo Choc - Essencial (+ flankers - Natura) - Una (+ flankers - Natura) - Imensi (Eudora)

What happens with most of these fragrances that I listed is that they will remind you of a popular imported US/European brand perfume, such as good girl or burberry her, but they will make it more usable for hot weather. Most of these are some sort of fruity floraly sweet, but not too cloying.
@dr.claire.perfume

Thank you! That's an interesting list. We had Natura here for a while in the form of home shopping and then with the Body Shop before the brand resold it. I would absolutely love to look at individual country lists for individual stores, but Sephora was the only brand that I could find that sold fragrance across so many countries and I lack local knowledge to know which particular stores to choose too. I'd say it's a similar situation in the UK, very few people would be shopping at Sephora... Thanks for list and for watching 🥰

@@dr.claire.perfume Thank you for the video, also! I came across your video today as I was curious to see what types of fragrances people are most drawn to around the world. I used to do research in a lab, and now I work in a company where I often do market research and I wished there was some type of public database with this type of information, just for us to have some fun! (ahahahah - obviously this would never happen as this type of data is extremely valuable to brands) As for your comment on the stereotype that Brazilians are fun/party people, you are not wrong! We are EXTREMELY social here. I am more of an introvert, and even I have the urge to go out frequently. I think that there is almost common sense here that human relations are very important, and most people go out with friends and family at least once a week. It's rare to find people living on their own, and when they do, they usually don't stay at home much either way.

@@luizachedid2707 yes you are right, the brands will know what is selling well in each country and where they should be concentrating their advertising efforts! But it will be extremely guarded and valuable information... I wondered whether to look at these lists for UK stores that I know are more often used by more people to buy fragrances, perhaps that would be interesting despite being only one country? 🤔 Haha, Brazil sounds fun! I love the idea of people being more together and sociable, I feel like the UK is missing that these days. 😂

As soon as I watched your video I was so curious about this Musc Invisible. I knew it was suppose to be a “your skin but better” type of scent but I’d seen a million of those in the past and it never seemed interesting. But I went out and bought it recently and WOW😳 it’s incredible. Everyone should try this out. It’s not floral. It’s not woody. It’s not spicy or sweet. It’s not cooling or warm. It’s not soapy. It’s nothing and everything at the same time. The best words to describe it is innocent and the purest form of clean Iv ever smelt. It’s there on my skin but it’s not at the same time. Like it’s invisible. Its absolutely incredible. I’m glad I gave it a try.

I literally have to take a bath in every Chanel perfume to get projection.. the Diors project a great deal and last much longer than Chanel. I don't know, I don't feel those lists were what I would expect for anywhere really! 🤣 Well with indie, any cut massively hurts the bottom line, so probably only a very cheap platform would be able to attract brands to sell as a group. I believe the absence of Chanel or Dior on many of these lists is because many people purchase Chanel/Dior fragrances at Department Store counters or the Boutiques. I today went to my local Chanel Boutique to repurchase my Coco Chanel, I knew it would be in stock and less crowded than Sephora.

Yes could be! I am actually unsure whether these lists on their website are referring to online Sephora sales only or whether they are in store sales too. Either way, I'm not sure Sephora are being entirely transparent 😉 have a good week! 🥰

Hi Claire another super interesting video! I'm from Brazil..leaving in Texas...a bit about us: Yes, we're the party nation and we're proud of that 😂 212 Vip Rose is a staple for EVERY Brazilian woman...a must-have ultra popular. It's soft and bubbly, great for our weather. The older perfumes, I want to guess it is due to the price, perfumes prices are in dollars, which makes them expensive for Brazilians, so the old ones may be more affordable. Also we tend to like classics and staples...if it is to "invest" minus well be on a tried&true. Regarding Dior...Brazilians like perfumes with great performance, tremendous sillage etc...so Dior is out😅 I hope it helps..love your videos!

Thank you! ❤️ I can see 212 VIP rose wearing well in Brazil! And yes, the older ones are certainly more affordable and also brands like cacharel have a lower pricepoint generally. Designer fragrances are incredibly expensive these days compared to only a few years ago too. Haha, I get that Dior are relatively quiet ones for partying 😂 Oh I need to visit Brazil! Thanks for watching 🥰

@dr.claire.perfume Yes, visit. You'll love it! Just another addition, Sol de Janeiro is an American brand that's created an idea of a Brazilian feeling to Americans (genius idea). The inspiration comes from a well established Brazilian brand named O Boticário (love of my life). They have body butter, body sprays, lotions, edt, EDP...the whole range. But nothing in Sol de Janeiro is not made for Brazilians 🤣🤣. The price is too high, the quality (compared to national brands) is not that good, and especially the scent profile is not appealing. Brazilians love florals, then aquatic, then fruity, theeeen gourmand...generalizing, of course.

Aah ok, so Sol de Janeiro is truly as un-Brazillian as it gets 🤣 haha! I agree, the pricepoint is insane for what it is...

Thank you! Very interesting! But wouldn’t French Sephora purchase totals be influenced by tourist choices from all over the world? Could that account for the seceral non-French brands in the list? This seems especially popular since you have the statistics from early September and the end of thentourist high season. It would be great to see a list from high-end stores in all those countries!
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 10 ай бұрын
Thanks ❤️ I am not sure... I don't know how many tourists buy fragrance at Sephora. I guess that's an interesting question. 🤔 I chose Sephora because I wanted to look at just one store across the entire world as I thought the fragrances on offer across different countries would be more comparable but sadly I couldn't access this information for everywhere that I tried to look at. I did compile a list for 8-10 UK stores, which I didn't make into a video as I thought presenting this info would be more interesting for more people, but I don't have the local knowledge to know which stores to choose in other countries unfortunately. Thanks for watching 🥰

halfway through the video. and i'm going to follow up my 1st comment by saying that chanel doesn't appear on the best sellers top 10 because they don't play the marketing "game" with sephora or other retailers, meaning they never allow for promotional discounts/sales, and they probably also don't pay retailers to feature their scents higher up in the "best sellers" listing. i think chanel recognizes/depends upon consumer demand already being very high for their perfumes.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 11 ай бұрын
In the UK there are very occasionally retailer specific discounts on Chanel but they are super rare and I guess they are funded by the retailers themselves, not by Chanel... Chanel really do do things differently with everything. I am always amazed to even see them advertise. They only really do that around Christmas, I guess because they have the reputation, they just don't need to. 🙂

That’s sounds weird for 🇨🇦. I know hypnotic poison by Dior is popular, but a lot of Mugler fragrances are very popular. Maybe it depends on the age of population to because I know a lot of older people by Chanel.

Yes Canada really surprised me, I've had various people tell me those Armani fragrances were popular because of a particular influencer releasing some videos about them the week before... I've also been informed that Sephora in Canada do not sell Chanel, which I didn't know as they are sold in Sephora Europe. Chanel definitely has a particular DNA that can be challenging to a lot of people and is certainly more popular with older people. Thanks for watching 🥰

Sephora doesn't carry Chanel, that's why. Thanks for the fun video! upd: I reached France and was surprised to see Chanel there. Maybe only the French Sephora has it? (and wow, so you could technically buy Chanel in France during the VIB sale for 15-20% off, waaaat! how did Chanel allow that) At least in Canada, Sephora doesn't carry Chanel.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 10 ай бұрын
Yeah I think in Europe, Sephora carries Chanel, maybe US too? I'm not sure, I think certain stores do supplement discounts themselves. So for example in the UK, there is a store called John Lewis that sometimes does 15% off fragrance and Chanel is usually included too, but I know that is super rare! Thanks for watching 🥰
@AdriennaDC

Some of these website in my opinion be trying to encourage people to buy certain fragrances. So I don’t usually go along with their best sellers. They always seem like, “ oh really”, whenever you look at the best sellers. I can definitely see Kayali as being number one though. The excitement behind the brand definitely brings no surprise.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 11 ай бұрын
Yes Kayali I felt was believable too, cos they are not sold at all retailers and Sephora are one of the few in most places, including the UK. Their marketing too creates a lot of interest.

3:45 I’m surprised. I always smell Cloud, variations of BR540 (not sold in Sephora) and Alien+Alien Goddess back home. Sauvage too. Maybe it’s seasonal, as you said 11:05 Musc Noir Rose was/is very popular in Paris in terms of newer releases. 13:45 I’m not surprised. Lots of people in Europe & South America love Amor Amor 22:01 I think it’s actually an American company. 😂

Yes sol de Janeiro is definitely more US than Brazilian 🤣 Thanks for watching 🥰 have a fab weekend

I think that only taking into account Sephora sales there isn't an entirely accurate picture. In Europe we still have a lot of little parfumerie shops that Only sell perfumes, and then there are the internet discount on-line sales, which must be enormous.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 11 ай бұрын
Oh yes for sure, this is just a snapshot of one store. It's not the kind of data I can gather for multiple countries in any other time efficient way unfortunately and I don't have the local knowledge to know which retailers to choose in each country, not their relative sales volumes. I chose Sephora as I thought they would have a similar demographic customer base across multiple countries to allow for more meaningful comparisons than stores at vastly differing pricepoints. 🥰

Honestly, I'm not surprised by the Kayalis. They seem to be really popular, at least in the Americas. I also think it depends on what shows up on fragrance KZbin as being in love. Or, what's new. Those are usually going to be in the top spots. At least in my understanding.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 11 ай бұрын

Hi from Egypt, I don't know how Sephora's algorithm works, but on similar merchandise websites, the website collects your personal information through cookies, and you receive personalized results based on what your similar demographic are interested in, and as you are suspecting, they can push for certain products if they have a huge stock from or the profit margin is really high.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 11 ай бұрын
I think you might be right... 🙂 I did check some of the sites on a different device using an incognito browser setting and it seemed to be in the same order (cos I was suspicious!), but I definitely think there's a profit/stock/promotion effect with what order they list in because these lists don't look believable in some cases. Thanks so much for watching ❤️
