My favorite survival knife will always be; the one, that I have on me when I need a survival knife!
@KanekiKen-lm1dl4 жыл бұрын
So what knife are you talking about ?
@stankygeorge4 жыл бұрын
@@KanekiKen-lm1dl Well, you know how luck goes; Sh*t just hit the fan and your 100K super truck with a full tank of fuel and all you gear just got washed down the river, you are at work in your 5K Armani suit and blue sued shoes, your stash on the mountain top is two hundred miles away, now what ya gonna do! At that point in time any knife you can get your hands on, will be your favorite knife! It may be a spoon that you just beat flat between two rocks and sharpened one side of or it might be a sharp piece of rock that chipped off while you were flattening that spoon! If you are in a fire fight and your weapon malfunctioned, any working weapon will be the best weapon that you ever put your hands on! The one in my hand, is always, my favorite one! Life is a bitch, if you are resourceful and keep your wits about you and you are lucky you might survive!
@KanekiKen-lm1dl4 жыл бұрын
stankygeorge you completely miss the point of choosing a survival knife. Of course you’re right that survival knife is going to be the one we have when “shit hit the fan” but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be the best survival knife. It wouldn’t even be a survival knife just “a knife I just happened to have on me”
@KanekiKen-lm1dl4 жыл бұрын
stankygeorge It wouldn’t be your favorite knife because I am positive you would sit there with your sharpened spoon thinking “I’m lucky to have any type of blade but I would do anything to trade this piece of metal for an actually good survival knife”

Let me rate the knives on this list for people who don't know shit about knives and want some transparency. 1. TOPS BAJA 4.5 "Made of 1095, its a pretty good knife so long as you take care of the steel. If it was your only survival knife you could do a lot worse. I wish it was bigger though." 2. MORA Bushcraft Black " A nice knife with a scandi grind for bushcraft and playing in the woods, or a solid camp knife, but its not full tang thus I wouldn't use it for my primary survival knife. If you gotta have a MORA for your survival knife check out the MORA Garberg." 3. Schrade SCHF39 Guide Master. " The only Schrade I own was made in America before they went out of business in 2004. The new Schrades are not something I would trust my life too. Most of them use a Hollow Grind "to cut back on production cost" and their quality control is poor. PASS on Schrade! 4. CRKT TERZUOLA. I don't have any experience with ACR13 steel. From what little I have heard you can do a lot better. Probably wouldn't be a bad backup or bushcraft knife, but it's only 4.4 inches. IMHO a survival knife needs to be in between 5 to 7 inches for most people. Now if you have the skillset to use a big knife to do smaller chores then go bigger, in this case it's better. 5. MORA BUSHCRAFT SURVIVAL KNIFE. "Read number 2 because they are basically the same knife but one is orange." 6. KA-BAR BECKER BK-2 " This knife is made of 1095 and is a tank. It weighs over a pound, and is a big hunk of steel with some heft behind it. It's a durable knife and in skilled hands can perform a lot of things well. A jack of all trades, but a master of none. You really have to 'WANT" to break this knife to make it fail lets be honest, it's THICC." 7. GERBER STRONGARM. This is the knife that I recommend to people that don't know anything about blades, that have a budget, and just want a decent knife that's easy to carry, won't rust, and is reliable. Say what you want about Gerber, but their american made products were never a problem, it's when the Bear Grylls line of knives showed up that was made in China is when their name took a hit. The Gerber Strongarm has been reviewed by many people that hated Gerber that tried to break this knife, they failed. 420HC is a cheap steel, but Gerber has the heat treat down to a science. At 3/16th of a inch thick and full tang with multiple carry options it's a fun knife to carry and it's only 70 bucks. If you lose it, or somehow in hell you manage to break it, no big deal you can afford another. The thing about using 500 dollar knives is you are afraid to do anything with them because if you screw it up you are out 500 bucks. Gerber has a good warranty as well and will replace this knife if it fails. 8. SCHRADE SCHF59. Yeah another Schrade. Like I said, most of them are hollow ground which will make a knife slice and cut well, but they run into problems durability wise. If you are looking for a survival knife grind, you want a saber grind, flat, or convex. scandi is great for bushcraft, and a hollow is good for cleaning game, but the name of the game here is a durable grind. Parting Words: Now I wanna be clear that not every knife out there needs to have super steel to be great so long as the heat treat is good. Many folks will scream with if it's not a BUSSE with INFI Steel or CPM 3V ect then it's complete trash and that's just the arm chair survivalist talking that go by the numbers and what looks good on paper, not what actually works in a survival situation. Personally I would not carry a knife on me that's hard to sharpen in the field, it's why I stick to 1095. I carry a modifed ESSE 6 in my get home bag for what it's worth, and have spent over 200 bucks making it run the way I want with custom handles, 90 degree notch for a firesteel, a custom sheath that holds a survival kit and a Lite My Fire Firesteel. The great thing about 1095 is it's tough, and can be sharpened on anything from a river stone to a piece of broken glass. A knife isn't worth 2 cents once it dulls on you and all knives will go dull with use, it's that simple. These are my opinions however from 30+ years of experience. Now some folks will tell you that you get what you pay for in the knife world, and there is "some" truth to that, but I have seen 60 dollar knives perform better and have more durability then knives that cost over 300 bucks. My advice is if you see a knife you like do your research, watch some knife reviews from people giving an honest review, not those that got it for free and will not be honest about it's real performance. The honest to god truth is there is no knife on the planet that will do EVERYTHING perfect. Blade grinds, lengths, and designs all have a particular use when they were designed. The reason I push the ESSE 6 is with it's flat grind it has both durability and blade cutting performance. At 6 inches long it's big enough to chop to an extent, long enough to be an effective combat knife, and can do many other task very well. Another factor is it didn't break my bank. Don't buy a knife you cannot afford to replace. Another great thing about ESSE is they have a no BS warranty. You break it, they replace it.
