Number 11. Attempting to name your ants individually.

Naming them individually would be so hard, but naming the queens or male elates would be a lot easier
@bullzdawguk8 жыл бұрын
D Bes To be honest, I never considered it much further than making a quirky comment. However, now that you mention it, I have pondered what it would take to achieve this ridiculous task. lol The logistics alone would take some effort. For a start, you would need a system designed to separate the ants as you name them. In effect, you would need two nests. Also, if you ever managed to name them all, how do you differentiate one between another? How can you tell Adam Ant between Ignor Ant? You would need to make little name tags for the ants. Perhaps a non toxic permanent paint could put a tiny bar code on the ant and you could scan them. This solves the way to identify the ant, but how do you find a particular ant? What if you formed a bond with Dee-Odeur Ant and wanted to find the little bugger? How can you pinpoint your favourite ants? As well, you would never finish your task as long as the queen is chucking eggs out like an over enthusiastic vending machine on steroids. Thanks. Nothing is better than getting my over active imagination into gear. It gives me the perfect opportunity to employ it as an exercise in writing. If you enjoyed reading this somewhat bizarre reply and at least smiled, then I achieved my goal. =P

I can't tell you how stoked I was to find you on KZbin. I spent hours and hours as a kid watching ants. I would catch ants and put them in a coffee can with dirt and watch them work. It was so fun! To this day I still love to watch ants outside but tend to not really allow myself to sit on the ground and watch the little buggers like I want. I don't want the neighbors to ask what I'm doing down there for so long. Just looking at ants y'all. So yes, I love watching ants and was never allowed to have an ant farm as a kid because parents didn't want ants in the house. I'm 49 yrs old and I don't want ants crawling around my home unless they are contained. Maybe it's time I finally start an ant farm! I can't wait. I'm excited to start reading up on what I need. It's going to be awhile since winter has begun in Minnesota.

i think plastic clear bottles, with some kinda clear plastic container to hook them up to to have an open room or how you call it, outdoors.............. and them bottles as chambers with hoses or something to connect. One can then slice one side to have a cover which one can then easily open, like hold in place with rubber bands or something.......... So you can actually clean every chamber seperately, and decorate them however you want.............. Señor, i hope to hear your thoughts of this idea. Ofcourse using clear plastic..... Thx for any response. Im totally new to this stuff, but i would love to try this stuff out, and i think im gonna with the idea i got in mind. I shall come back if i got something with a picture. About the point of keeping exotic ants in a foreign country. For some ant lovers in germany, actually for most it is impossible to keep non exotic ants and they keep surviving through the year. The issue is the hibernation. I know some guys from the forum that live on the 3rd or 4th floor and they have no garden, some do have a basement/cellar that has temperatures above 15 or 16 celsius often what is still too warm for hibernation to ants. I once visited a guy that has such an apartment and I saw his big farms and setups and he had no place to put it in winter for hibernation. Many ant keepers tried to keep colonies warm through the winter they lived up to 1 or 2 years only and then they started acting strange, less brood, colonies died for unknown reasons and so on. The official registered ant shops in germany focus mostly on exotic ants because of that issue. It is nearly impossible to put a 5x 40cm or so on farm in the fridge in a 2 or 3 room apartment and even the balconies are a issue because the glass breaks(frozen glass easily breaks) and temperatures are often too cold because of not enough thickness of soil and protection that ants would have in nature by beeing 1/2 - 1 meter or so underground through the winter. I guess the same situation is with reptiles and fished in zoo shops. I always wondered why they did not sell any european reptiles or fishes here. But now I get why, the living situations offer no place for hibernation. If there was some technology that does the opposite as the reptile heating mat like some kind of reptile cooling mat that would open more possibility to keep native species. It is sad to see how most ant diaries from native species end after 1 or 2 years because the colony died and exotic diaries last 4 years and longer sometimes. ): Some native and species in germany are actually amazing like: Myrmica rubra, Formica sanguinea, Formica cinerea, Lasius fuliginosus...... I feel like ant keepers must be responsible and if they ever get exotic species it should be one that is impossible to spread in germany.

Simple solution for #3, the one about disturbing the queen. Put her in a dark room and set up a NIGHT-VISION camera that records live footage of her and the other founding workers directly to a laptop or computer.
