As someone who considers himself a big Golden Sun fan, I'll say that Dark Dawn is: 1. Definitely far behind the duology on GBA 2. Not a bad game at all. In fact, it's pretty good, just very underwhelming compared to its predecessors. 3. Needs a sequel, a true high quality game to right some wrongs.

It is a spin-off, it doesn't even have anything to do with the main series, since it is an alternate universe that only share some common elements, just like most final fantasy games have no relationship between them. I really like the game, but the load times, oh boi! How the heck a ps4 game installed in the hdd can have as many and long load screens as a psx game on cd. It seriously blows my mind.

I'm a fan of the Golden Sun series and I really enjoyed Dark Dawn! It's a terrific classic style JRPG. I've replayed it numerous times. Too bad not many agree.

If you see Trails in the Sky as one single series, the third one - which was just named so - is the black sheep, because like I said in videos before, it feels just like a lame spin off with this lame priest Kevin and his nun in a parallel and nearly empty world of Liberl. True story, but I really wanted to quit my life after this, because at this time, my life was worthless. But than came Cold Steel and you already know my opinion about this great series. You could say that Cold Steel saved my life and now, I am looking forward for 3 and 4 and the rest of my life. JRPG can save lives. In my case, it did.

I agree Trails of sky 3rd chapter feels like a spin off, I didn't mind it cause it tied up a lot of loose ends and further developed the characters I loved. I also didn't mind the dungeon crawler feel of it as after playing the first two if I had to go through all the same towns yet again I might of went insane. But what we can both agree on is screw that stupid Kevin lol. Would of been a lot better if it was just from Estelle's point of view again or even Joshua's if they wanted to do something different. Heck even Tita cause I love Tita but Keven blech Kevin!

FINAL FANTASY series´ blacksheep: FF15 !!! action paced, few characters, few places, vast and empty world, lack of lore and worldbuilding (SE tried to fix this), and a system with no relation at all with the series.

I did. Not the best in the series but I definitely prefer replaying III to replaying II. I have a soft spot for I because I first played through it at a friend's house soon after starting to get into JRPGs so I prefer it to both II and III.

I get that. 2 and 3 are a close call to me, but, if forced to choose, I like 2 slightly more. My biggest issue with 2 is the dungeons. It seems on average of 3-5 steps for a random battle.

I know that Fates isn't very like among FE fandom but I did enjoy playing Birthright that is one that I have. I found it fun to play and I also found story not to be bad at all.

Being separately sold is what really killed fates for me, also birthright is bland, but not awful, conquest and revelation is where the story absolutely stinks. Also Hoshido shouldn’t be losing the war, but Nohr has evil bad guy plot armor with less resources, less allies, starving to death, no money, and terrible leadership and according to dialogue less and less skilled soldiers yet is winning the war in every route.

I'd say Super Paper Mario is the black sheep of The Paper Mario series considering it the first two and the last two are very similar to eachother respectively. Super Paper Mario is a 2d platformer with RPG elements sandwiched between two duologies with consistent gameplay on both sides.

I agree wit Super PM being the black sheep, the story is good but the gameplay is lacking since it's mostly linear corridors wit minimal platform segments, the turn based combat it's taken out instead it has a mush simpler mechanics of the "allies" from your party wit this pixies things that each of them has only one type of attack and they doesn't have any personality, the only exception is Tippi because of the story plots, the 3ds to 2d gimmick is fun at first but it becomes boring fast when you realise that 3d mode is mostly used for dodging enemies, obstacles or used for activate stuff, my opinion is that if I want to play a more "basic" Mario platform game I rather play one of the New Super Mario games or the 3d Land and 3d World games, my favourite is 3D World for Wii-U being exepcional good

Sticker Star is the worst, Super Paper Mario is different but the switching between 2D and 3D was fun and it had it's fair share of humor and other emotions. Sticker Star on the other hand had boring and tedious boss fights which could be a little mitigated if you had a special sticker, but good luck having the right one, no other charcters fighting with you and the worst of all, Kersti.

Depends on who you ask, Squirrel. From a beginners/newbie starting point, Awakening is a fair start, even though it can be punishing (Mostly because of the hit or miss map design). Even more so when you throw in Lunatic+ difficulty. Though, I'd argue Echoes is the best FE released in the past 10 years, despite it's shoddy map design. Mostly because out of all the 3DS FE releases, it's got the best story (Some could argue it's got one of the best stories, following Genealogy of the Holy War and Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn).

@Ghalion666 If you can get your hands on Fire Emblem Blazing Blade, which was the first Fire Emblem game introduced to the west, or Path of Radiance, then you'd be set for the rest of the franchise, as they're the best starting points for a newcomer. Sacred Stones is an okay starting point also, but it's considered one of the easiest FE games around, so it can put the expectations low for you when it comes to the rest of the franchise and end up blindsiding you if you play any other game. Fates: Conquest is up there in terms of difficulty, but it's no Gaiden or Radiant Dawn, which are the two hardest FE games. With that said, you might be better off emulating the FE games (If you have no issue with the gray area that emulation is) because of how costly it is to get physical copies of the older games. Path of Radiance goes for 150 USD or more (300 USD unopened), and I have no idea about older games (Shadow dragon can go up to 80 or more USD and Fire Emblem Blazing Sword being 90 USD while 140 USD unopened). You might need to look around for roms, though, considering how hard Nintendo's been pushing to get roms off the internet. I'd suggest looking up more prominent FE'ers on KZbin to find those roms. Don't ask for those roms, though. Ask about them.

Suikoden 4 was very difficult to understand on the story and Im still lost on it even though I beaten the game.

Both being practically fanfics that completely miss what made the games that came before them so special and instead tries to pander to the lowest common denominator. In fact, much of what you said for FE Fates you could apply to those games as well.

IMO, in the FF main series FF2 would be the black sheep, mostly because of the experience system, totally different from the rest of the series. And between the spin-offs I would choose Mystic Quest, which I like a lot but most of people seem to talk it down. So a better candidate for that would be Explorers, extremely grindy and tedious.

When it comes to Dark Dawn, I agree it's not a bad game, for the most part. It pales in comparison to the others, yes, but the ending really left a sour taste in my mouth. Ending the series on a cliffhanger just made me feel the game was a total waste, I'd rather not have played it if it wasn't gonna have a proper conclusion. Therefor I do hate the game with a passion, it might seem petty hating a game for the final minute of it, but that's how little I like when games do this. Granted, should they ever return and finish the story with a sequel, I'll mellow down on the hatred for this game, but that is seemingly never gonna happen. Otherwise, great idea for a list, looking more at the reason why a game is shunned from the fan community of these series :D

Wild Arms 4 is amazing, my 2nd favorite in the series. FE Fates is also geat, and while the story is terrible, the dating and children aspects, as game mechanics, are fantastic. Seriously, I love planning the optimal inheritance parents for my children units.

Oh Fates, can never win. The issue I had with the waifu/dating system was that it was VERY poorly done. In Awakening it was relevant and made sense, but in Fates. How many remember what the explanation was? Then think about the numerous problems that'd be solved quickly if that mechanic was used for the whole army instead of copying Awakening's mechanic. Unlike awakening, it was perfectly available to take advantage of. Shame an interesting bit of it had to come from one of (if not)the worst characters of the mechanic(Laurant and Rhajat). One of the things that made it worse in Fates was those characters had no reason or relevance to be there. The few that could fit in would have been better as characters out in the world instead of....that. The story of each pathway, someday there'll be enough energy to get into that mess.

Ugh dating mechanics, why are they so fricken adored in RPGs as the majority of the time they just destroy the story and characters. Imagine how many games with dating mechanics would be that much better if they had a determined romance and built the characters/plot around that. Instead they slice up character interactions/story so it can flow with your choices and not create a bunch of extra work for the company. Sorry just ranting cause it always riles me up when I see games that could of had such a more solid story if they didn't do all the multiple choices and dating nonsense.

@@ErickLandonRPG Yep I love that game but that was my biggest complaint with it, the whole story shows that Alisa is obviously the main Heroine and love interest. But there dating nonsense kind of ruins the excellent set up they built and forces shallow multiple choices scenes and endings parts that arn't anywhere near as impactful as they could of been if they had ignored the dating nonsense. If they would of ignored the romance angle and just treated those little scenes as social events you could experience. It could of went a step further as not just developing the main hero and said character but also other characters with each other creating even deeper bonds between all the characters. Could you imagine how bad Trails of Sky would of been if Estelle could pick who she wanted to date it would of completely destroyed the story lol. Another example is FF10 if you could of picked Wakka as your lover that game would of had no redeeming features lol.

You have to see Cold Steel as a JRPG and anime genres and anime clichees parody JRPG and the dating sim/Visual novel feature is one of these parodies. Just look at the standing pics in CS1 and CS2 at the end of a bonding event. Just like in a dating sim/VN. This is a feature that was surely be planned from the beginning. I won´t spoil CS3 - can´t wait to play it on PS4 and/or - surely - on PC - but you can see it already on YT - and I think, even the weddings of CS4, because the 5 main girls - Alisa is as canon and main waifu of course the big one in the middle - seem to wear wedding dresses on the thumbnail and a wedding is the highest bond a man and a woman can have and they don´t have churches and cathedrals and priests and even an arc bishop for nothing in Erebonia - but Alisa is canon and main waifu, because she is the only one Rean kissed in the final bonding event. @@martinomagic9230

@@christianappel1998 I completely understand where you are coming from and why the whole dating thing exists as you said. I am just stating that it is a bad idea and diminishes stories in games that could of had a even more solid well rounded story. Even the ones that do it the best and I don't think Cold Steel does quite as bad a job as some other games. I still think the story would be way more solid without those features as it limits interaction between all the characters. None of the other characters can acknowledge the bonds you are forming because that would be a ton of extra work to make new dialogue for each route you pick. See my point of view? That's all I am getting at, is that it limits the story for shallow "player choice" mechanics that are popular. The reason why that stuff works in dating sims is because that's all there is to it is dating and choices so you can devote full effort to it.

Agree most on the Val rev title, it seems to me as someone who has seen it discussed time an time again...... 50% of it is for being different and not being the rts rpg the other's are in the franchise. I agree on Suikoden 4 too as it is and remains my favorite franchise it is my least favorite (4 was) but it beats 75% of today's "triple a" space of repackaged yearly shit that needs to go away for 5 or 6 years an innovate (looking at you far cry, looking at you Assassin Creed, and for damn sure Modern Call of battlefield valor duty games.....) Thanks for another great video. :D I have to admit, the first time I played through Dark Dawn I didn't care for it at all. I played through it a second time though and enjoyed it. I think a large part of if someone likes or dislikes the third game is going to depend on how much of a completionist they are. The points of no return in the third game aren't friendly to players who try to get everything. I was quite annoyed with the game the first time I played it since I missed one of the Djinn and I had to restart my playthrough to get it after being more than halfway through the game. XD

The worst Mana game is probably Heroes of Mana. It ditched what made the Mana series great, that is the action-battle system As of Fire Emblem, if you include all titles, the black sheep would be Fire Emblem Gaiden. It's like the "Zelda II" of the whole franchise. Although it's not a bad game, the gameplay was so much different from all the other entries, and it introduced a bunch of elements that were never used again. I personally love the remake of this game (Shadows of Valentia), it's my second favorite Fire Emblem game and so unique in the series. Would be nice if you would cover the black sheeps of the Persona/Shin Megami Tensei/Ys/"Tales of" series as well.

I loved FE Fates ( only played Birthright though....haven't gotten around to downloading the Conquest & Revelations paths ), and I'm in the minority that liked the inclusion of Phoenix mode.....yet another reason it can be considered the black sheep of the series ( I will never understand "hardcore" fans bitching about an OPTIONAL mode that they never even have to look at and isn't intended for them to begin with... ) I'm a HUGE Golden Sun fan, but apparently I'm in a minority there too as I love all 3 games and still wish they'd give us a 4th already ( damn cliffhangers.... ). Dark Dawn gets way too much hate for no real reason ( in fact, my only significant complaint is the points of no return....but that's still not enough to warrant the insane hatred the game gets ) Final Fantasy is a really tough one to pick a black sheep so kudos for sidesteping it....2, 3, 8, 12, the 13 trilogy, 15 and the MMOs ( that should have NEVER been made part of the main numberd series ffs....wtf were they smoking when they decided that was a good idea? ) could all be considered for the title....and Dirge of Cerberus....and After Years.... and while it's a favorite of mine, even X-2 is a bit of a black sheep...Pokemon is also a tough one to pick a black sheep as many different gens have their haters.... hoping later parts include a Tales of game ( really curious which one you'd give the title to....personally I'd say Dawn of the New World ) and EarthBound Beginnings ( it may be the original Mother, but compared to EarthBound & Mother 3 it's definitely the black sheep of the trilogy ).

I haven't played Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but Paper Mario: Color Splash is also a bad game in some points. In the boss fights you need a special card to defeat the enemy. Otherwise it is impossible to defeat the enemy. Real bad gamedesign. Wow, there ist a Golden Sun 3? No... that game does not exist!

Dark Dawn isn't THAT bad ffs.....people are way too harsh with the hate. Sticker Star & Color Splash though, both games are garbage tainting the name Paper Mario ( no original characters or enemies, bullshit Kamek fights with cheap gimmicks, lame combat mechanics, poor general design, and NO real RPG aspects anymore )

I think a lot more people hated color splash and orgamie king people our split on. I’ve only seen king played up to the second elemental boss fight. The combat system in king does have major issues so does the hp updating system you should not have to find the hp upgrades which they did in color splash and sticker star. I actually enjoyed Suikoden Tierkreis and finished it during a vaction in Asia. So many fond memories of Tierkreis but I gave up on Suikoden 4 and Suikoden Tactics after only 3-4 hours with each game. I really tried to like them. They just didn´t catch me. Story, graphic and gameplay felt a bit off and less interesting. I probably would feel different about Suikoden 4 today.

Revolutions, for me at least, is not trash but is bad. Although the story is appealing and the combat fun, the game can be repetitive and the character designs face are awkward looking special the main villain, death with huge boobs, it is more hilarious than threatening

I would like to personally add to the list Shadow Hearts:From The New World, it is definitely the black sheep of the shadow hearts series but, I honestly like it, though i've never played it or any other Shadow Hearts titles (Kinda still new to the shadow hearts fandom, didn't know it existed for a very long time 🤷‍♀️) but I still think it was a good game just eh went from horror with little bits of comedy to comedy with little bits of horror which wasn't really a great choice for the series, i still think that the battle system looks pretty cool, i enjoy the party members and hope I get to play it someday.

Erick, have you played any of the Namco X Capcom games? They're very simple SRPG-style games. I'm playing Project X Zone 2 right now on 3DS. I don't think they're very good games at all, but I still enjoy it as a sort of guilty pleasure.

Great video! Agree with almost all picks and reasoning. I personally enjoy Suikoden 4 over Suikoden 3 any day. I also think Fire Emblem radiant dawn was a very weak title, except filling the plot holes.

Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness? I dunno, what game to call a black sheep is pretty hard in my opinion, a lot of people shit on SO4 for so long that that game could potentially be more seen as the black sheep, with SO5 being where people stopped caring more. I personally really like SO4 though so I always thought it was weird how much people used to shit on it

True that Fates is very controversial as a whole but I thought Echoes was the true Black Sheep of the Fire Emblem franchise because of not just poor sales of the 3 Fire Emblem 3ds games but the "let's throw out the weapon triangle just for kicks" fiasco that the fans didn't like but I guess Gaiden had that too so I see why I.S. respecting Gaiden's mechanics.

Valkyria revolution is still in its box and Star ocean only played it for 2 hours but put it down immediately. Fates had to wait 2 weeks to get it when release because Gamestop didn’t get game because snow storm( fancy edition(special))

The reason so many people, including myself, hate Sticker Star (and to a lesser extent Color Splash) is because it really doesn't do anything right. The combat system is flawed to the point that there's no skill or tactics involved, you just use the correct item, and that's it. When you don't even get EXP from winning battles, that makes them pointless as well as boring, so gameplay is a failure on all fronts. And then you add the fact that there is no story or characters to speak of, you end up with a game that has nothing of value to offer.

Yeah the Fireemblem fates has some features I don`t like: 1. Navigation on World map sucks 2. Builduing your own castle and buildings is a nice idea but it feels borring (WTF are the cards for?! And I don`t like multiplayer or PVP. I want a solid singleplayer campaign) (3. I miss the cart with equipment on GBA games. It was fun protecting it.) (4. I have a little bit trouble with the nondestructive weaponry (Again GBA)) 5. I like the idea of supporting level, but not the romance resulting in children, because the game has only 27 or so chapters and getting the children chars is just time consuming(grinding) (6. I am not a big fan of the 3d style. I liked the 2d handdrawn fights more.)

I had the same problem with fates. Tbh, I picked up fates as a joke since my friends where making fun of me for being a weeb because I played bayonetta. (I got bayonetta because I needed something to hold me over until dmc5 came out)

Personally i liked Valkyria Revolution but I feel like they could have given the story more depth , Star ocean felt like it was too rushed. As for fire emblem fates, I love the fire emblem series and though the gameplay was great, I personally hated how it was divided into 3 parts/games instead of being one full game.

you know i belong to those who did not appriciat Wild Arms 4 and so forth. because of the changes. but the games are still great with good charators and a fun as hell battle system. my dislike comes from i startet with nr 3 and thought that the sequels would follow the recipies. but no the western theme got kick and so did the battle system. i missed the western setttings since it is not uses as much as it could and the one biggest problem i had with the nr 4 and onward was when you finish the fights if you did not have a charactor one the sixagon where the chests with the loot was you did not get it, WHAT THE F::::ING H:LL

Fire Emblem Fates: A game with a true ending hidden behind a DLC. As someone who bought both cartridges, I was pissed-off when I found out about the third "true route" and that it will be digital only, with limited physical release.

Worst part is that the true ending removes any effects the other two routes had. There ended up being actual consequences whether you side with Nohr or Hoshido. One side is alienated and loses 2 royal heirs, tensions are high due to Corrin's actions and there is a very frail peace. Revelation? Lol no, let's jump into this ravine and kill the evil dragon so everyone can live happily after. It's just frustrating.

Trails in the Sky the 3rd. Fantastic game and well regarded by Trails fans but very different in structure to any of the other Trails games. Definitely the odd one out in the series.

The gameplay in valkyria revolution falls in a very awkward place. It is an rpg with some semi real time combat - not quite a pure jrpg in the classic sense and also not entirely an "action" rpg. It's kind of like root beer soda - not for everyone....

I actually do like Fire Emblem Fates cause it was actually the 1st FE game i actually played and frankly i think it's pretty good and most of these games on this list i havent heard about....except for sticker star, i played that pile or garbage and begrudgingly 100%'d it and it was just bad...sticker star's combat is repetitive, regular battles are pointless, the backtracking is stupid, the bosses are awful and the final boss fight was just idiotic....makes me glad i traded that game away at EB Games for Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Didn't say I hate those since im still going to buy integrity and faithfulness but to me its like those(bland mc,...etc) became star ocean series trends.
