My issue with scalpers is when I see them show up at the store and buy out all the figures to put them on ebay for 2 to 3 times retail price, which denies a lot of people from finding items in the wild. I am a firm believer in "if you find two, leave one for the next collector"
@AnthonysCustoms6 жыл бұрын
he's selling them to people who can't get them at retail... why are they less deserving than people who can find them at retail?
@munstrumridcully6 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonysCustoms I guess I just get indignant at the mark up. I get he needs to make a profit, but sometimes the price is double or more. I get that we live in a capitalist system and he has a right to profit while allowing people to get figures they cannot find, but its just a me thing, i tjing the markup should be around 40 to 50% retail. I know, its a me problem.
@AnthonysCustoms6 жыл бұрын
but the thing is, he's not setting the price. the buyers are. if they weren't already willing to buy the items at those prices, he wouldn't be buying extras to sell. we're talking production run numbers in the thousands so even if he bought every figure at every store within say an hour's drive, he's have practically zero impact on the supply side of the equation so it all just boils down to the guys willing to throw money at something on ebay for whatever reason. most people look at the equation from the wrong side. once you realize it's the other end that's causing the "problem" you don't have to have a problem at all. know what i mean?
@munstrumridcully6 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonysCustoms Yeah, I get you. I remember from my old economics class that value is what people will pay. I guess I am just being naieve. But I do see how it is the people willing to pay that set the price. You're right that I was looking at it grom the wrong side. This is a solid list. As a long time collector I can 100% agree with this entire list. Patience is the biggest key. Hunt for deals and focus only on items you want and not so much anything for bragging rights. Current state 2020/2021 COVID collecting has been much harder to be patient as distribution is a mess (especially in Canada) so if you can ore order and get @ base retail dont be shy - just budget smart and again buy only what you need to survive.

I don't remember what number it was, but I can back up the pointer about being patient and not overpaying to have a figure sooner than most. Marvel Legends Vintage Storm. I tried to catch it in the wild when the wave released, but my timing was poor and it actually took me 3 weeks to get Iceman, Cyclops, Dazzler and Silver Samurai. I didn't want the Wolverine, and I probably passed on 80 or so opportunities to pick him up while hunting for Storm. I declined the scalper prices repeatedly, and even won an auction for the original Toybiz figure, which I used to fill the spot until I got the new one. Two nights ago, I saw there were six cards on the peg at the Target by my work place, and sure enough, second from the back was Storm. It took a few months, but I got her at normal retail. I can honestly say the satisfaction was worth the wait.

Thanks for those tips. Always good to have a friendly reminder to collect wisely. I'm also a gross person because I very rarely wash any of the used figures I buy (the only exceptions being two Miku Nendoroids that were sticky because they'd been kept in their original packaging). Maybe it's because I got them either from Japan (where most people never open their boxes) or collector groups that I trust take very good care of their figures. But I'll keep in mind I need to organize a grand scale bath time for my collection in the near future.

I've only ever seen Japanese figures hold their value. It depends on the character whether or not it'll increase in demand. Though they are subject to being reissued. A good example is the Berserker Armor Guts (SP-046) by figma, which was going for over $300 on ebay until figma announced the repainted version (410).

Years ago I remember buying the Neca Deluxe Terminator action figure that came with all the accessories even the mini gun, and it was well worth the price, Despite the fact I wasn’t a huge Terminator Fan at the time I loved the look of the Figure and all of its accessories were magnificent. And to this day it’s a purchase I never regretted. However I have screwed up every now and again and bought something that doesn’t really benefit my collection, like X-force Wolverine, Thought he looked cool with his 90’s claws but soon came to regret my purchase mostly because of the fact I wasn’t much of an X-Force fan, same could be said for the anniversary white and Blue Cyclops, great accessory but since I don’t collect classic X-men he doesn’t serve a purpose on the shelf. And if I can’t return the figure I simply customize them, or take them apart to mix with another figure. Other then that This video really helped set me straight on my purchases, which is why I’m taking a break from marvel legends since theirs so many to choose from, and I’m only gonna but the ones I like personally, not because the figure would look great, but because I would love it personally.

My way of collecting is: -Buy characters you only like -Buy a doubles in case you want to open one for display, use as a custom, or in case it gets lost or eaten by a dog etc. -Join a Facebook figure group and try to check in every so often to see when the latest preorders drop or what sales happen. -Priorities and Responsibilities first before Figures.

When in reality, I wouldn't care about those figures in less than a month. Now I always question whether I really like the character I'm buying and if its worth my money and collection real estate. Bootleggers trying to sell knockoffs or cheap imitations are one of the most annoying things about this hobby. Sometimes it is easy to tell a knockoff, especially if its an import figure because the KO will likely be far, far less than the real figure. But for domestic figures, they're almost always about the same price as the real thing, I find. Chinese bootleggers are also starting to get wise to the fact that most eBay buyers are just filtering them out, so I've been noticing Chinese "warehouses" setup in the US that peddle their cheap imitation goods. Beware of any listings that proudly plaster US flags, or other US imagery on their listing photos, or have very Engrish-y item descriptions, because those are more often than not bootlegs as well. You can't even really be 100% safe with places like Amazon, because there have been stories of people getting bootleg figures from 3rd Party sellers there as well. The best advice is to do research on both the figure and the packaging to know what the official version looks like vs the bootleg version. Often, the packaging will be missing certain official markings or stickers that the official versions have. Generally that's more true of Import stuff. Sometimes you can tell because the figure itself will have off-colors from the real figure or whatnot. Do research, ask questions, etc, before you commit to buy. That said, shady, underhanded bootleggers that don't market their figure as such are usually subject to you getting a refund if you go through paypal. Beware any figure that is marked as "Chinese version," "Third-Party version," "Unofficial version" etc. or any other similar wording used.

It was shipped & supplied by Amazon but I noticed it was a longer shipping period after purchase (something normally expect when making foreign purchases) and it turned out that amazon had sourced a batch from a Chinese seller. This wasnt that big a deal for me since I was buying it for a project rather than collecting, but it's something I never forgot and look out for. And why I mainly buy in person now than online.

You can get rid of cigarette smell by wrapping the figure in Bounce (clothes dryer sheets) and storing the wrapped figure in a zip lock bag for 3 to 6 months depending on severity of smell and surface area of figure. Larger surface area will take longer for the odor to clear.

Yeah you're so right about opening your figures, I once considered leaving things in the package, but I would never sell my stuff, only if I were starving or something like that, so I don't really care about the price of my figures. And about the scalpers yeah I don't like them, cause they do affect the price a lot, in my situation anyway, cause I think what you say only applies if you live in a relative big city. Cause if I want a figure, and my local shop doesn't have it then I'm pretty much screwed and my only option would be to buy from the ridiculous prices on the internet, wich I don't I prefer not having the item than support scalpers

The pathetic part about the fake though is it’s actually better than the real one In one crucial way it was the Spiderman and Mary Jane two pack and the Spidey in that uses the Pizza Spidey mold which really needs to be thrown in the garbage because that’s what it is and the butterfly joints on the real one are out of the box stiff to where I know if I move it anymore it’s going to break. I think I've an opposite problem against following the trend. The things I REALLY want are never produced in figures or are out of date already, so things I just buy are fillers, otherwise I'd have nothing in possession. For example I'm buy DC&Marvel not because of my childhood watching TV or comic reads, but because my cousin had stickers (batman, spiderman, Dr. Doom, the thing, and a few x-men) on his wall, therefore they feel nostalgia to me which make me doing the purchases. Even with popular anime like dragon ball, action figures such as the young Gohan with his sword isn't produced. I don't think GT kid Goku gets a figure neither. And there are many way more less known anime that will never get their toy figures. Once popular Kamen rider v3 had its toy last produced like nearly a decade ago. Cartoon like Gargoyle also went out of date, I cannot get even a decent David Xanatos. (there had only been like 1 or 2 produced all these time) So I just kind buy fillers since the one I want never get produced, then I often found myself not liking them enough so immediately try to sell them at loss. Anyway to help with this?

I half agree about Chinese knock offs. I've bought several knock offs, just to see what's up and unless it was an import fake, the rest (marvel legends, TMNT figures) were almost indistinguishable from the real ones...down to the serial number. The only differences I noticed, was on the ASM2 Spider-Man figure had different sized wrist pegs than the original and the front carapace on the TMNT figures was a hard plastic, as opposed to the softer material used on the legit figures. However, I bought a knock off figma ASM figure and it literally fell apart when I took it out of the box. Sik
