My personal opinion on this matter is to stockpile ammunition (and take up reloading too) is to stockpile several pistol rounds for 9mm, .22lr, .45ACP, 10mm, .38 SPL, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and.380 ACP (plus any ammunition needed for any pistol or revolver you may own not included in the above list). For rifles I suggest.223/5.56 mm, .308 and 7.62x51 NATO, 7.62x39mm, 30/30, .30-06 plus 12 gauge 00 buck and slugs plus bird shot and #4 shot. (Again add ammunition for any long guns you might have). The amount of each should be a minimum of 500 rounds for any of the calibers you don’t currently own, and for the ones you do own, the amount should be enough for 5 years of your current use and extra for 9mm and 5.56 NATO. There’s no magic number but you must get as much as you can afford. You will need other things in case of a natural or manmade disaster. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Do not advertise your stockpile however for obvious reasons including security concerns but not limited to this. Oh, don’t forget the magazines for the firearms that use them. Never too many magazines for 9 mm and 5.56 NATO firearms

I think everyone in the USA should own a 12 gauge or at least a 29 gauge, a handgun preferably a 9mm or 40 cal and a 22lr rifle. I think these 3 are the basic firearms all USA citizens should own. In his stockpile we're boxes of .22 LR dating back to the early 50s. It fired perfectly fine, though a few rounds did require a second primer strike. The only thing special Grandpa did, was keep his Ammo Cool and Dry the last 60 or 70 years of his life.

I would not get the swiss cartridge here in the united states. The 30-06 is way more common. Lots of 30-06 rifles out here military and just hunting bolt actions. It has more power than the swiss cartridge. 30-06 can be loaded to take moose and grizzly bear easily. Kodiak and Polar bears have been hunted successfully over and over again with the right loadings in 30-06. Sure a 338 magnum, 375 magnum, or a 458 win mag might be better but the 06 can get it done with 200 grain and heavier bullets. I don't know about the 40 smith and Wesson? The rest of it looks good. See how things go with the .277 fury coming up. The new military round. It has good use as a hunting round. Like a 270 winchester.

One of the best calibers that doesn’t get mentioned much or usually at the bottom of the list is the 5.7. It better than the 22lr and 9mm combined. Depending on which brand you choose it out performs most every other caliber for personal protection. It’s capable of penetrating body armor and bullet proof glass. The 9mm falls Short in both these categories. It out performs 22lr in every category. One of the reasons I really came to depend on the 5.7 is weight, you can carry 500 rounds in your front pants pockets without any stress at all and unlike the undependable 22lr round I’ve never in about 18 years never ever had a single misfire. That’s over 100,000 rounds without a single issue. The 22lr is known for misfiring, bad primer strikes and a mess of other issues. Some people might complain that the price of 5.7 is too high compared to the 9mm. In this case that means 357, 44, 50 and a slew of larger calibers are not worth buying, they would be wrong. People use to complain that the 5.7 was too rare, not anymore because it now comes in over a dozen platforms. All you really need is 4 calibers. 22lr for small game hunting not protection ( you can use it but it too undependable ), 5.7 for personal protection, AK for protection and game up to 300 yards. Shotgun 12 gauge with different ammo choices. 00buck, bird shot, slugs and a couple of personal choices. Then build from there. Add a true hunting rifle, my preference 3030 Winchester 270 Remington. At this point I’m good to go. Anything more is just dead weight. Now food and supplies.

Dry the ammonium nitrate in the oven on low just before packaging, place one in each storage container. Ammonium nitrate is very hydroscopic, and it can come in, ahem, handy later.
