The argument of josh as i understand it is, that for a creature entering the battlefield without being cast no mana was spent to cast it. Which from a logical point of view makes sense, you did not spend any mana to cast the creature, because you did not acutally cast the creature. I would argue that the phrase "no mana was spent to cast it" implies the need for the card to have been cast and thats why they specifically added the "if it wasn't cast". I am no judge though, and i would be really interested how the ruling would be if this first phrase would not be on there.

I know I'm really late to this, but the text does make sense, and if it flickers it would enter with 2 +1/+1 counters. The key word here we need to look at is "or" - "if it wasn't cast OR no mana was spent to cast it." You could reanimate this from the GY and it'd enter as a a 5/5 hope this helps.

Yeah that was always understood. But mayos stance was that "pay no mana to cast it" and "wasn't cast" are the same thing. So there was no need to put both. I was saying it does need both since they are different conditions.

I agree that the condition would logically work without "if it wasn't cast". To me when the creature ETB both if you cast it for free or it was blinked or resurrected it stays true that you did not spend mana to cast it. I think they added that bit mostly to make the effect less debatable than because it was really necessary.

It makes perfect sense, otherwise you could ninjutsu after the declare attack step since creatures aren't (yet) blocked 😅 The second part requires the card to be cast, to have no mana spent *to cast it*

It's brand new for thunder junction. I'm not a huge fan of key wording it. But it'll just be for this set so hopefully won't be too much of a pain to remember

The problem with the Centaur's wording is that in the help text of Plot it deliberately says "Cast is as a sorcery". Seems like a mistake on WotC's part, especially given that the Plot cost is higher than base cost.

I think casting only as a sorcery is bad design. I would've liked to be able to plot any speed spell and cast it "at any time you could normally cast it"

The card that catched my eye is the drake that makes spells cost 1 less on opponents turn, now we can have the effect x8. When i get home im gonna try to make a mega control deck that only plays spells on opponents endstep. Mystical teaching x4 ofc, youst hope i can hold the board until it takes of. So many spells that go bonkers if you reduce the cost of them, thats if the "lords" can be protected with counters. Might even play lotus petal so i will be able to counter a spell 1 turn earlier. Nothing beats a rewind into draw cards!

@@saltandpauper It is, and it works for sure, im youst not sure how to place it to get the most out of it. If you are intrested in checking the current build out search for "Watz" at mtggoldfish the decks name is Eurekas teaching. Atm the deck rampa and untap bouncelands to generate value. Not sure if the ramp is nessesarry actualt, might be able to cut green and go full control or something. Would ramp upp the fun atleast, maybe play Skred 🤔 The deck seems to play good against meta decks, but maybe they youst get a bad draw. Gonna try to drop green and go for a build looking more like old mysticalT, see how it performs.

Watching you read freestrider commando wrong is really frustrating. It should have been edited it. You’re combining 2 separate sentence and saying it’s one. It gets the +1/+1 counters if it ETBs and it wasn’t cast, or if no mana was spent to cast it. So it ir got O-ringed and came back it would be a 5/5

Of course it would. That was never the discussion. The disagreement was about the need to have both conditions noted. Or whether "no mana was spent to cast it" also includes that it wasn't cast.

(Edit) Ok so sorry Josh, host is right. I didn't realize the whole crux of the argument was that the text was superfluous. I thought host was arguing that as the text is, no counters would be put on Commando if entering from exile. You guys were getting into the semantics and I was tired from work, lol Older cards had lots of superfluous text. But over time the rules language in mtg has been refined so that there is as little text as possible, yet worded in a way so that it can't be misinterpreted.

So for reference there was no intention to make him look clueless or discredit him. We've been friends a very long time and it was all in light hearted fun. Neither of us have hurt feelings regardless of whom was right/wrong there. I was honestly caught completely off guard. As those 2 conditions are not the same thing and neither encompasses the other. The idea that he suggested is saying a spell that hasn't been cast also counts as a spell that was cast without paying mana. Those just simply aren't the same thing. Lol

I think you are undervaluing Holy Cow Edit: Conduit Pylons is technically not strictly better because punishing mechanics like Desertwalk exist. Desert Nomads puts you on a 10 turn clock.

I'm on the main host's side about the commando topic. "if it wasn't cast" covers other cases then "no mana was spend to cast this" and the o-ring example is one of those, which seemed not clear to Josh. I could see that this segment comes off a little weird, but since the guys are friends and all is in good faith, I am not sure why "the community" is defending someone who does not feel hurt. It's more the added mental tax of tracking arbitrary things such as "did this trigger once this turn yet" magic is already an incredibly complex game. Taking effects like this and adding the additional tax of tracking their instances of triggers and amount of triggers as a way to balance powerful effects feels like a cop out at the expense of the player. I'd rather them just have less powerful effects in the first place that aren't limited

I don't see the argument here. If it ETBs and wasn't cast, it's a 5/5. If it ETBs and no mana was spent to cast it, it's a 5/5. Cascade casts it for free, thus giving it 2 counters. If it gets put on the battlefield, without casting it, it's a 5/5. I think it's self explanatory. If a card says you may cast an instant or sorcery, that doesn't mean sorceries are related to instants.

I would agree. The argument from Josh was that the "no mana was spent to cast it" clause is included in the "wasn't cast" wording. Which I disagreed with. He's saying that one wasn't needed since the other covers both. I was saying both are needed as they are different conditions

Sorry josh, don't agree with you. If you imagine the phrase as a flow diagram it reads: "Has the creature been cast? Y or N? If N, then no counters. If Y, was any mana spent? If Y again, then no counters. If N, then counters."
