I think we all can agree we want to see a lot more 3D era characters in the next game. Havik for sure I think he could be a formidable threat as he was in the comics, Khameleon because I want see another member of Reptile's race and another female ninja, and Ashrah because I think she has the most interesting story being a demon trying to cleanse her soul of evil and possibly lean into Asian folklore for her moveset.

It’d be cool to see Onaga, or Shao Kahn. Like, imagine if we got Shao Kahn BEFORE he was the emperor? Which would mean Onaga would be the emperor, I don’t remember if that would work in the timeline, though, but, maybe! And I’m just now realizing, would Liu Kang bring back Onaga and Shao Kahn? Eh, maybe.

Yeah had that theory about the great Kung Lao too. I think liu kang ( if aftermath is canon) will take him to a timeline back in the future (because of some disturbance within time) as one of the champions, maybe we’ll get to see both Kung laos interact with each other kind of like we saw with the others.

For Hotaru, the banners your talking about are called ( Sashimono ) they are war banners, attached to them as they go into battle. ( it's also where we get the word ( Sash ) the things worn in contest or ceremonies.

Since MK12 is a reboot that is most likely gonna be set during The Great Kung Lao era, my top 10 returning characters would be: 1) Onaga - I think this is a no brainer. MK Deception was the first MK game I ever played and that intro cutscene really showed how strong he was. Taking on the combined forces of Raiden and The Deadly Alliance and then tanking Raiden's suicide bomb like it was nothing proved that he is arguably the strongest character in the Mortal Kombat universe. Yet somehow we haven't seen him since the original timeline. He was supposed to be in the MKX comics but the series was discontinued. The Dragon King's return is long overdue. And now that Fire God Liu Kang is the protector of Earth realm, I honestly believe Onaga is the only character that can rival Fire God Liu Kang in terms of strength and power and is the only character that would put up a good fight. 2) Shao Kahn - Now I know what you're thinking, we've had Shao Kahn countless times so why would we have him again? Well we have never seen the origins of Shao Kahn, only heard snippets of it. From what we know, before Shao Kahn became the emperor he served Onaga. Shao Kahn would then poison and betray Onaga to take his place as ruler of Outworld. I think it would be cool if we can finally see the back story and origins of one of the greatest villains in the Mortal Kombat universe. I'm thinking his character wouldn't be named Shao Kahn in game. He would be called something else and then maybe there's a plot twist or an after credit scene where his character claims the throne of Outworld and reveals his name after Onaga's death. Also, Shao Kahn as a playable character in MK11 was one of the most fun characters to play with the coolest looking moveset. 3) Takeda - I always thought that the Kombat Kids were dull and half of them were just a knock off version of their parents. Takeda is the only exception to this as he's actually interesting being the son of Kenshi and Scorpion's student. In this rebooted timeline, this version of Takeda wouldn't be one of the Kombat Kids. Since this game would be set during The Great Kung Lao era we would most likely see the game set in the past where we could potentially see the origins of the Shirai Ryu clan. If we look into the lore of Mortal Kombat, we can see that the founder of the Shirai Ryu was a warrior named Takeda. So essentially this version of Takeda would be the founder and would kinda replace Scorpion as the Shirai Ryu ninja in the game. That's not to say we won't get Scorpion though. We could see a role reversal from MKX where Takeda is training a young Hanzo Hasashi. 4) Tremor - He's a character that we know almost nothing about other than his involvement with the Black Dragon. I've always found him to be a cool character with a very interesting ability in his power to control the Earth. His MKX moveset was extremely fun to play and watch. It would be nice to see him return as the powerhouse he was and his character expanded in the story. 5) Smoke/Enenra - Smoke has always been a fan favourite character with a very flashy moveset. We need more ninjas in the MK games. Nowadays it's just Scorpion and Sub-Zero. We didn't even get Ermac or Reptile in MK11. I'd also like to see more about the smoke demon Enenra mentioned in the next game.

He is more powerful than Shao Kahn. The only reason he was ever defeated was because Shao poisoned him, knowing he couldn't fight him in fair combat.

Sareena isn't a 3D era character, she debuted in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, which was a part of the klassic era. Her only playable appearance was in the 3D era though. Also those Smoke renders were awesome. They made him look a bit old though, lol.

Reptile (Bonus character) A character I made up Typhoon a white MK ninja with the powers of Fujin. The reason I put reptile at number 1 was I think they have been treating that specific character like complete crap. At one point in the MK franchise he was a very hard secret boss fight. So I don't know why they have been treating his character with such disrespect.
