let me state one thing, if you do have clothing items that wrinkle really easily, You might want to consider buying a de-wrinkler spray, it is by Downy, and they sell it in a travel sized bottle at WalMart, and I'd HIGHLY recommend buying it. ONE BOTTLE will last an ENTIRE FOUR person family for the items that will get wrinkled, you spray it on, and tug the items straight. Another thing is to hang those items up in the bathroom while people shower, it dewrinkles the cotton and stuff like that while you are showering.

My #1 mistake is over-packing and not leaving room for souvenirs! I usually try leave at least 10-15lbs worth of space for things I will inevitably buy in port or on ship, but..I always muck it up and have a fun time trying to get it all in bags to go back home.

I never bring formal wear. We rarely eat in the dining room and it's just not worth the hassle to bring something that would need special care. Next cruise we plan on doing carry on only so definitely don't want something we are only going to wear for a few hours.

I think it's pretty ridiculous that we have to hunt down past cruise compasses to then guess what the dress codes will be for our cruise. They need to give us this information in advance.

I should not have to go looking on KZbin or anywhere else for information that is vital to our cruise such as dress codes. Socks and underwear. A slim packing cube will hold 7 pairs of socks and underwear rolled together. Two of those fit side by side in one drawer of the cabin. One for me one for her. That gives a set for every day plus one. Then we did another that we called the 'excursion underwear'. Three for each of us in the one cube. That was figuring we would come back and shower after each port. Planning... Down to the socks and underwear and how they fit in the drawers (open the top of the cubes...slide them in the drawers...no unpacking required). 12 bags of luggage... we didn't miss anything. :-)

YOu can always take old socks and underwear and throw them away on the trip to make room for souvenirs and purchases.

Bring your own hair dryer or use theirs? I've read so many mixed comments about whether you are allowed to bring your own hair dryer. The one they provide is small, they say, and takes twice as long to dry your hair! My hair is long and very thick. What do you recommend?

I’m a fairly light packer. I usually just take a carry on for vacations less than a week. However, with out next cruise (first RC Cruise) out of Florida, we are planning to stay in Florida for a while after the cruise. Any tips on how to pack for a longer vacation, but not all on the ship?

Tammy Montgomery For up to two weeks (overall, of course) you can easily pack in a suitcase, maybe for weeks if you pack really well and “light”. If the trip is longer or you don’t want a heavy suitcase, the other alternative is to do laundry. Does the place where you do your vacation have a self-serve laundry or is there a laundromat in town? (I would avoid services that charge by the item, too expensive). You can probably find out a lot through a Google search.

You can also bring like 1-3 more outfits and/or bring febreze/body spray/dryer sheets to freshen up your clothes. The febreze/body spray/dryer sheets doubles up as air freshener, especially for the cabin bathroom.

simple re-usable outfits, tightly roll undies, shoes that don't need socks or light socks, one convertible sweater/shawl/jacket that can be used for fancy or casual events. things like that. Each item you pack should have 2 or 3 uses and be able to be used 2 or 3 times. also...downy wrinkle release spray; works like febreeze on odors and gets rid of wrinkles

Hey Matt, I see scissors are a prohibited item. I always carry scissors in my checked bag so I won't have to be bothering other people when I have to open something that requires cutting, and TSA only prohibits them in carry on bags. I've only been on one cruise before, and I did carry my usual scissors in my checked bag. Do they search checked bags for prohibited items? I'm ok with all the others: no knives, no guns, no ammunition, no box cutters (although they could come in handy), and nothing else.

Nora Martinez Usually (small) scissors are not a prohibited item, I think. I was surprised to see them listed as well. Check with your cruiseline. You might be able to bring children’s scissors if regular scissors are prohibited.

Well, they're not children's scissors, but they're not big either. They're 6.5" from tip to handle. I don't even use them at home. They're literally my travel scissors, are always in a little travel bag, along with a few other daily helpful tools (nothing else in the prohibited list), and always go in my checked bag. Since "my" cruise line happens to be Royal Caribbean (going on my second cruise ever in 9 days!), I'm checking here. I'm not sure I want to actually call them and ask, as that would alert them to the fact that I do carry scissors in my checked bag.

Nora Martinez Why didn’t you just check Royal Caribbean’s policy then? No need to call. www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/prohibited-items-onboard-policy It clearly says “Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.)” Measure the blade of those scissors you always take.

@@schwan44 I'm new at cruising and wasn't sure where to find the information. I see that scissors with blade length under 4 inches is ok, so that covers the scissors I always have in my travel kit. I should be ok. Maybe by the time I've taken a couple more cruises (only taking my second one next Saturday) I'll know where to go to find information. Matt is a fountain of information, though!

I have had my iron taken away, only to have to get it on the return. Ferbreze has a spray. Your cabin stewart will tell you where you can go.

I generally iron before packing & then buy downy wrinkle release, it generally works.

I usually just pack a tiny empty spray bottle and then fill it with water as needed. I just mist the wrinkles as needed and either smooth them out with my hands or I gently pull on the clothes to remove them. So far, that has worked pretty good for me, but I may try the wrinkle release spray to see if it does a better job.
