What blows my mind, is that he literally never sounds the same, he changes his voice or accent in every single movie. Not to mention the fact that in real life he has a rather strong Irish accent, which I can imagine being very hard to shake.

But Id agree he is the finest actor of our time. Really looking forward to Christoph Waltz's next big role too. He's killed it thus far perhaps one of the greatest of the age as well :D Notice the lack of Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace, but he's absent for a reason

Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the definition of "Method Acting"; you can go on forever to talk about what he's done to prepare for his roles: - My Left Foot: Befriended several people with disabilities at Sandymount School Clinic, refused to break character, and demanded to be moved around on the set in his wheelchair and have other people feeding him. (btw, he denied that he had broken those two ribs) - The Last of the Mohicans: went through weight training, spent lots of the time in the forest his character lived, learned how to fish, camp, hunt, make canoes, and skin animals. He also never went anywhere without his rifle. - In the name of the father: kept his Northern Irish accent the whole time, lost weight, spent lots of time in a prison cell, and insisted that the crew would throw cold water at him and verbally abuse him - The boxer: spent three years at learning to box - Gangs of New York: Always spoke with his New York accent, became a butcher apprentice, listened to music by Eminem, and hired circus people to teach him how to handle his butcher knife and throw daggers. He also became sick during production because he refused to wear a warm coat since it was not from the 19th century. - There will be blood: spent one year at researching his role where he learned how to drill for oil. - Lincoln: read over 100 books on Abraham Lincoln, demanded to be referred to as "Mr. President", wrote messages to Sally Field in "Lincoln" style, and refused to let the English cast members speak to him with their own accents. Daniel Day-Lewis is indeed one of the greatest and most acclaimed actors of his generation, but I'm not very sure if I want to be on the same set with him or live with him; I'd prefer to be with someone who can be completely in character on set, and then turn it off when we're not on set

Pretty sure they've learned that not wearing a coat isn't a cause of sickness. You tend to have illnesses spreading more rapidly in the colder seasons because people gather in closer proximity more frequently, causing an increase in sickness occurrences and a false association with keeping warm being necessary to avoid it.

Just finished watching Gangs of New York. Holy crap what an amazing performance. Easily one of the best villains in a movie I’ve ever seen. You can see his point of view, as he seems more human than most villains. And when he goes all crazy villain on everyone he really captures the crowd with his unpredictability. Wish he was in more movies so I could see more of his likely would be amazing work, but so comes the cost of method acting. It really takes a toll on a person, as he’s been out of the game for 5 years at one point, and a few years at other points. Truly an amazing actor. So sad to see him retire

Jack McClelland I don't necessarily agree, but I will say this: no actor has done so much in such limited on-screen time as Ledger did with his Joker. His total on-screen minutes in that film weren't all that many, to be perfectly honest, and what he did in that limited time was nothing short of amazing. He took over the entire film.

Opposite the Hot fury of a DDL villain, and the open malice of Fiennes. That is why I wanna see it. All three are great... Guy Pearce has always underwhelmed me since Memento and LA Confidential only in Lawless did he play anything I thought was unique and intimidating and that was because he shaved his eyebrows off. Christian Bale?.... Please. He is the least imposing villain. Even in his best work of American Psycho he never wowed me in terms of excitement.

Josef has a point. All those actors have incredible talent have transformed into certain roles amazingly. Daniel is able to become someone entirely different, absolutely nothing is recognizable to the point that I don't even see him ANYWHERE in these movies! Seriously, where is he? That's how good of an actor he is! Some actors do a role so well that it is all we see them as. Daniel is so good that we don't see him, we see a character only, much to the dismay of his supporting cast because even with a star studded cast he just dominates a movie.

I love most of his performances, but I especially liked him as Newland Archer. Because I'm so used to seeing him in very physical roles in which he roars and shouts, it was amazing to see how good he can be also in a much more restrained role. Some people accuse him of "chewing the scenery" in all his films, and it's true that sometimes he goes a little over-the-top (though I always love it, to be honest ^^). But his ability to emote in a more quiet performance is also really impressive. The same is true, to a certain extent, of The Last of the Mohicans, which is really a masterpiece in my opinion (in addition to having superb actors, it is so beautifully filmed, perfectly edited, one of the best soundtracks of all time...)

DiCaprio-The Aviator, Gilbert Grape, Blood Diamond, The Wolf of Wall Street Guy Pearce-Memento, The Rover, LA Confidential, The Proposition, Lawless Christian Bale-American Psycho, The Fighter, The Machinist, American Hustle Sean Penn-Milk, Mystic River, Dead Man Walking, 21 Grams, I Am Sam Get the picture? DDL in Gangs of NY is one of the greatest acting performances of all time. I am a "Lincoln" scholar and that performance was incredible, but even so, not as good as Gangs. KZbin and America...can you tell me what is wrong with this picture? Top 10 on Beyonce anything get's millions of views while a Top 10 on one of the greatest actors of all time is sadly not even at 50,000... *sigh*

Cuz this was released today, also quit that pretentious "appreciate true art" crap, its obvious and annoying

Never said I appreciated art but thanks for the complement. Also, if you pay close attention to other videos (the ones with mainstream artists that aren't always talented) their views pile in quickly.

I didnt mean to say u said that, it was merely the outlook u were using, the idea of how truly great art goes unappreciated while mainstream filth becomes popular. the truth is day lewis is an excellent actor but a video labled with a more famous name will aquire more hits regardless of quality, more views dont mean beyonce is better than day lewis

Well said Mike Richard . I believe we have the same outlook on this and it is obvious that a bigger name in a video would have more views...its just a shame that not many people know or will watch a video about a great actor or artist such as this one simply because their name isn't 'big' enough. But hey, guess that happens. Thanks for being fairly understanding and level-headed. Don't see that very often on KZbin, let alone the internet. Cheers!

I grew up watching last of the Mohicans with my mom when my dad was out on business. We would always jack the volume way up during the fort scene with the cannons going off. It has to be one of my favorite of his performances.

I believe he is the best actor that has yet graced a screen. He has perhaps the three best performances I have ever seen by an actor, including your number one, which is BY FAR the best performance I have seen anyone give on a screen.

I think his role as Daniel Plainview should come in at #1. He’s one of only a couple TRULY dynamic actors who can play complicated, yet believable characters -the other actor being Jack Nicholson. His role in There Will be Blood makes your question the character’s mood, desires, and intent. He was totally unpredictable and completely captivating!

What's amazing is that he doesn't look that different between his roles in Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood, but there are times when you're still not sure if it's the same actor.

This guy has risen to probably the best in the world, he is amazing. For me his Daniel Planeview character was his best, the guy was just brilliant in that role. His Lincoln was outstanding too. He is as good as anyone right now probably at his apex.

Rumor has it that in There Will Be Blood, they named his character Daniel, to avoid having to deal with the his method acting annoyances by calling him by his real name

As an Irish man, his accent and isms in In the name of the father were mesmerising, in Christy Brown they were otherworldly. He is "The Actor".
