The Hannah-Barbara style was the golden era of Tom and Jerry's animation history I grew up watching Tom and Jerry. It was a cartoon that I love for it's slapstick gags and a large amount of violence that they got away with back during the '40s and '50s. As an adult, I have to say that after 8 decades, these classic shorts still hold up really well. Heck, I'd even argue that the slapstick holds up better than Looney Tunes. William Hanna and Joesph Barbara did a really fantastic job with the comedic timing of the gags and they established the one single rule that the title characters aren't allowed to talk with a few exceptions of course. Overall, Tom and Jerry will always hold a special place in my childhood as a timeless classic and will always be considered one of the greatest cartoons of all time.

There was a character similar to Tom's mean owner in the cartoon called "Dicky Moe." This character was a sea captain who's obsessed with capturing a gigantic white whale, whose name is Dicky Moe, which is an obvious reversing of the name of the titular whale in the classic novel "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville. The obsessed captain is apparently based on Captain Ahab, the mad seaman who's determined to capture and KILL Moby Dick, as revenge for his having lost a leg to the elusive white whale. In the cartoon, the mean captain hires Tom and Jerry as sailors to accompany him in his search for Dicky Moe. As might be expected, he treats the cat and mouse like slaves, making them do the hardest labors on the ship, yelling at them whenever they mess something up, and generally making their lives miserable. I don't quite remember exactly how the film ended. All I recall is that somehow, the whale floats away with Tom stuck on him, while the enraged captain chases after them, screaming "Come back here with my whale!" I think Jerry survives unharmed.

@duaneullery21335 ай бұрын
I'm genuinely surprised the final scene in "Southbound Duckling" wasn't the number one choice. For the uninitiated, the short involves Tom going after Quacker with Jerry intervening. By the end of the cartoon, Quacker and Jerry are relaxing on a Florida beach, when Tom pops up behind them, slamming a toy bucket over them and trapping them. As we hear Quacker demanding to know what's going on from under the bucket, we see Tom pull their beach umbrella down with an evil grin, hiding what he's about to do. That's how it ends. Basically, it's HEAVILY implied in this cartoon Tom caught and ate them both. Still the darkest moment I've ever seen in a Tom and Jerry short, particularly considering it's how the cartoon actually ENDS, meaning there's no last minute save.

The toodles story actually makes sense, felines of all types nurture other young as they are coming into season and then when ready to mate, they either eat it or it starves cos she can't mother it properly. It's why there are so many videos of felines being "nice" to young of their prey species. I worked on a farm that had loads of feral cats and we'd see them with chicks and ducklings all the time and once found the remains of a puppy where a cat had nested with her kittens and never found where she stole the puppy from. So, it's a kind of joke around that I think

Man looking back, blue cat blues is kind of hilarious The idea of tom and jerry opening up with tom about to kill himself is just funny for some reason

English isn’t my first language, so I couldn’t understand any scenes with dialogues, all I knew was Tom was going to have troubles with it, so by the time I finally understood all of them, some were genuinely sad

What about when Tom & Jerry were on an island populated by cannibals and by the end, they were being chased by said cannibals to be eaten?

Jerry even dressed as a cannibal til the real ones arrived and wanted to eat both of them.

After 1958 or so, Tom and Jerry cartoons were no longer really Tom and Jerry cartoons. They were farmed out to inferior animators and basically became junk filler. The original run and animations were great.

Even as a kid, when I saw Tom’s owner, I was like “Wow, this guy’s really mean. And not even in a funny way.”
