Superman has undergone two significant retcons. After "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and after "Flashpoint." In both cases, Superman basically started from scratch rather than being a continuation of the previous Superman.

I used to be an avid DC fan, but the constant retconning just got too confusing and absurd. The point of serial fiction is to build up a universe where actions have consequences for your favorite protagonists. But the more they told me "Oh, those old adventures where you rooted for Hawkman or Robin or Cyborg... those things never happened" then the less the characters I'd been rooting for even mattered to me. Retconning just disrespects the long time fans.
