Spiritual Healing is still my favorite Death album. They had progressed musically but I felt it was the last of their albums that still retained the "pure" Death metal feel. I read about the Athiest/Death feud where Chuck was very vocal in his disapproval of Atheist's jazz influence. Atheist felt that Chuck turned away a lot of fans from checking out the band and hurt their career. The only other albums I own here are Harmony Corruption, Left Hand Path, Cause of Death. I'd have to add Benediction-Subconscious Terror, because it's the only other Death Metal album from 1990 that I own. I've never liked Glenn Benton's vocals, but they do sound better here.

Great retrospective. I was 13 at that time and let's just say that 1990 was a great year for extreme Metal. Thrash metal was peaking commercially and the death metal underground was rising at the same time. Meanwhile Pantera was releasing Cowboys From Hell. Just a great year. I'm glad I was coming of age at the right time.

Good list. You should note that 5 of the bands here are all from the Tampa/central Florida area which is the birthplace of death metal, having a massive scene in the early 90's. I partied with or personally knew most of them except for the Deicide guys. The guitarist from Nocturnus had the same day job as me. We would discuss metal during lunch break. Ahh, the good old days.

In addition in December of 1990, seeing Sepultura, Obituary and Sadus at the El Paso County Coliseum! It was a great time for Death Metal!

Im a little biased Deicide had the best death metal album of 1990. I never really got into the buzzsaw guitar tone the Swedes were known for. Scott Burns deserves a lot of credit for how well Deicides album sounded. Amazing how he was able to track those drum parts for that time period and got the sound that he did. Hes a fucking genius!

Entombed is a no brainer. I'm surprised Atheist is in the list. At the time I didn't give it much listen but in hindsight it's easily one of the most underestimated albums ever, certainly top 5 of the best death metal albums of the decade. Pestilence released no album in 1990, but 1989 Consuming Impulse is also one to remember forever.

I haven’t started watching yet but from my limited DM knowledge I’m expecting to see: Eaten Back to Life Spiritual Healing Left Hand Path Deicide Cause of Death Am I wrong in assuming this? I’ve only been a fan of Death Metal for 4-5 months so I’m still discovering a heap of cool stuff. I just remember thinking oh I know a heap of good records from 1990 Edit: Omg I’m so dumb I didn’t even read the title which literally says every one of the bands I thought of lol

If the production was better, I would put Cause of Death at #1. All these years later, when I have a random riff pop into my head it's either from Carcass or it's from Cause of Death. Such a great time period! I was shocked to see Nocturnus on here, even moreso that it made the list rather than an honorable mention. Did they have a large European following? I got the first two albums when they were released, but I never saw a single other person wear their merch, play their music, or even mention them. I even forgot about them until watching this video.

Hey man , what about doing some research about late 80's early 90's UK Thrash Metal ? There where many great bands on that era , unfortunately they didn´t get any spotlight at all because everybody was paying attention to american / german / brazilian scenes at that time ...

Yes, I know all about them. I'm a huge thrash fan so I've heard pretty much every UK thrash band back then. Yeah it's kinda strange since all other UK metal got a lot of attention but the thrash scene didn't get much even if there were several good bands from the UK.
