I don't know if I go as far as PTSD, but, the one game that no matter how many times my best friend in myself rented it, denied us a victory, was Ninja Gaiden on NES. I had to be almost 24 years old and, by then I had purchased it, before I finally beat it.

Back in 95’ on a military base I knew a guy who had the game gear tv tuner. He jacked the cable tv line into it and BAM! We had cable tv on a late night desk watch at hq. So it did work but I guess you need to tinker a whole lot.

Biggest disappointment for me was renting "Back to the Future" on NES. I loved that movie and was so excited to play a video game about it. We didn't have a lot of money so renting was pretty much my only way to play new games. After a weekend of trying and trying to get anywhere in the game...I got to the diner stage (which is practically the beginning)...and died before I even knew what was happening. I didn't even know what I was supposed to do because there were no instructions. I was so mad that I got in trouble for yelling at the TV and upsetting my younger sister lol. Years later I saw AVGN review that game and I got angry all over again. Great video as always.

NBA Jam home versions were missing the 3 most popular players at the time: Jordan, Shaq, and Barkley. But it made sense the most popular players had their own video games and likeness licensed already. At least David Robinson was in NBA Jam despite being in his own Genesis game.

The model 1 Gameboy Advance hands down. Brilliant games, fantastic ergonomics, but a screen that's so dark it makes Mario look like an Undertaker Funko Pop. I really didn't discover how great the library for the Advance was until a year later when I picked up a used DS Lite. I think growing up in the 80s, and with a C64, the licensed titles were often the most disappointing. The C64 versions would often be rushed to release in time with the movie or show they were tied in to so you got things like the C64 version of Robocop, which to this day I have mad nostalgia for, but you can't complete without a cheat code because you can't finish the drug factory level thanks to a game breaking glitch. Good job Ocean. Solid effort. I mean I can't beat Robocop on the Gameboy either, but at least that's because I suck, not because it's inherently unfinishable.

It's not that Nintendo didn't understand that the backlight was necessary, it's because they wanted you to be forced to buy a system without it so they could later sell you a model with it, doubling hardware sales. They put out a backlit GameBoy Pocket in 1998 and they still pulled the same stunt with the GBC, GBA and DS. It's called creating demand, and yeah, it's shady.

I too was (and still am) an Orlando Magic NBA Jam aficionado. There was nothing like draining threes from the top of the screen with Shaq in the arcade, and while I love all forms of the home NBA jam franchise, the missing Big Aristotle was a disappointing omission. Spot on!!

oh man number 10....I remember being at a friend's with his older brother renting Mario is Missing and being so amped...for the first 10 seconds..then we realized we wasted our weekend rental on something that we wouldn't play for more than 10 minutes. We ripped it out and put the old go-to in, with that being Contra, and playing that for the rest of the night. That was the first time we beat the game without the code.

Mine is related to one of your picks but has extra disappointment attached- I asked for an NES Advantage joystick and my dad found that they didn't have any at the store he went to, but the guy there apparently said "hey, we have this other new controller you might like instead." And so, my dad came home with the U-Force. Didn't take long before he took it back for a refund.

When the original Tetris came out for the NES I was about 6 years old, and I had absolutely NO IDEA that Tetris and Arkanoid WERE NOT the same game. In the advertisements for this "new" game I've never heard of, and totally mistook it for something similar to Arkanoid, and that's all I wanted for Christmas that year. Well, I got it, opened it up, and found out real quick that they are NOT in fact the same games in any way! I'm a new sub to the channel, and I really am enjoying your work! We seem to be of a similar age, so watching your videos is a real trip down memory lane, and we share A LOT of disappointing moments in retro gaming history! When my parents and I (age 5) came back from overseas, one morning we had to stop by Sears. It was the day Pacman was released. People were lined around the store before opening. Later on I finally saw a demo at another store. It may have been the first time said "what the hell?!" I then laughed and felt sorry for all the dumb schmucks who had waited in line first thing in the morning that day.

I had the same experience with Mario Is Missing. I was around 10 or so, and I saw it in a K Mart. I begged my mamma to get it because it appeared to be an 8bit version of Mario World. I didn’t have very many games and this new one was $50. My mamma caved in and bought it for me. When I got home and realized what it was, I felt SO bad. I still told my momma that I loved it and that I was happy. Deep down, I felt sick that I had squandered my mamma’s money and a rare chance to get a new game.

As it relates to “Mario is Missing” I never understood why Bowser wouldn’t just execute Mario when he gets the upper hand and kidnaps him. I guess this would be considered “too dark” for that era in gaming. Maybe the developers thought “we’ll imply that this is what happens should Luigi fail to rescue Mario in time.”

My most disappointing moment was back in the 90s, Nintendo held a contest on one cartridge and the first person to beat it without cheating would be given a code. But if you cheated or beat it without reading all the way through, you lost. I got all the way through and finished and immediately turned the console off. I wonder how close I was because the game was insanely hard!

Yeah I used to be a Sega Genesis loyalist in the 90's. I saved all the money I made delivering newspapers and working in my uncle's pizzeria to buy the Sega 32X. Not only did it suck, then they released a totally new system (Sega Saturn) the next year. I felt betrayed and ripped off by Sega, so I bought a Playstation and have been a Playstation guy ever since. Another big disappointment was The Nintendo Power Glove. My friends and I see it in The Wizard movie. All we talk about all summer is the power glove. Then my chinese friend gets it for Christmas and we all go to his house to play it. It hardly even worked, and was just stupid, and not fun to use. We were all so pissed.

As a kid, picking out Dr. Mario for the NES and Night Creatures for the TG-16 to purchase were my biggest letdowns. regarding the GBC and its lack of back light... it's years too late to save your disappointment but if you're still interested/curious about what such a backlit GBC would look like (and if you haven't already heard of it), look for Kong Feng GB Boy Colour. it's a backlit GBC with a slight widescreen nature but not too shabby at all. and 66 built-in games that are actual GB games.

Now if you return a game in that time you will only get half your money back and that is if your lucky. Thank goodness we have a ton of places we can get info from to get reviews on a game today. In the late 80's early 90's if not from word of mouth i would look on the back of the box at the pictures and read the description and hope for the best.

Power glove was the biggest disappointment for me. I thought I was going to beat Mike Tyson’s ass with that glove! Glass Joe Mike Tysoned me. I tried the glove on a couple of more games then never used it again.

Mario’s missing was the worst, for me, as a kid... I went thought the game boy stuff but didn’t know any better, the Mario’s missing was a horrendous bait for kids.

I tuned into this because you showed the NES game Super Pitfall on the screen but then it wasn't on the list. That was one of the all time most disappointing games I ever bought. So much potential but so bad.

The U-Force and the powerglove were the most disappointing NES accessories. I got the the power glove for Christmas and mowed many lawns to get the U-force.

I didn't have the power glove until I was an adult to add to my collection so I didn't have high hopes for it, but I would totally see where it would be disappointing. Especially with how awesome the Wizard made it look.

Most disappointing retro game for me was Last Action Hero on the SNES. I had a rented copy (no manual) and it was hard as nails. Never got past the first level.

I remember playing Myst back in the early 90’s, I got stuck after 2 hours and turned it off lol....My biggest disappointment in gaming was playing any game on the N Gage, I bought it on release and was blown away by all the features. Sadly gaming on it was horrible, I tried to play Sonic and Red Faction on it and was confused to why the graphics where so weak. Once again you’ve outdone yourself with this video, please don’t stop working hard and I’m hoping to see a ton of content from you in 2019

Dude I never had an Ngage but I have heard nothing but horror stories lol. Having a sonic game on there did get me intrigued but I never pulled the trigger.

12:20 Fool, shoulda been saving for the n64. Took a few years savings to afford it with those cartridge based games $$$. Was worth it tho! Even waverace was epic in '96.

The lack of Shaq and Jordan, later Barkely, in NBA Jam is criminal. They could have easily made hidden characters that were their Balrog/Mike Bison equivalents. Tecmo Superbowl had qb bills/eagles/browns and NBA Jam had hidden characters for days.

For me, biggest disappointment ever was the "sweat" instead of blood, and stupid fatalities in Mortal Kombat on the SNES.

Another awesome video. I too have a million disappointments with NES/SNES titles...so I can easily feel your pain. One such example was Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It was a fun game on its own but to slap on the Final Fantasy title didn't do the series justice...it was a catastrophe in comparison to say "Final Fantasy IV" (or II as it was known in North America at the time).
