Long ago in the days before doorbell cameras, the 70s , I was returning home with my mother and sister finding the front door covered in bloody handprints and blood trailing up and down the front porch. The boyfriend of the neighbor across the street had stabbed her near to death and she ran to our house for help. I was maybe 9 or 10 and that image was hard to get rid of, as was the knowledge of what had happened. I don't think I would have liked to see that on video, her covered in blood crying for help and nobody there. She did find help from another neighbor and survived. That's a childhood memory that stays with you!

Driving under the influence, especially drinking and driving is completely avoidable. Why? People seem to not care about others on the roads. It's a completely selfish and entitled thing to do. I recall when MADD was formed. It's still very necessary. Judges and the court system don't punish the drivers so they continue to drink and drive. Jail time should be had with the first offense. Why aren't there more harsh punishments for this highly preventable crime? What needs to be done to make the consequences more life affecting for those that choose to drink or do illicit or prescribed substances before they get behind the wheel? Something needs to be done to make it stop. People are being killed and maimed unnecessarily.

I don't think the mother should have been charged with abandonment. She did the right thing and left the baby with someone she felt she could trust. She could have put it in a dumpster or killed it as some mothers do.
